AP Score Cancellation Form: Instructions, Deadline, and Mailing

The AP Score Cancellation Form is a one-page PDF from the College Board that permanently deletes one or more AP Exam scores from your record. Download it from the AP Students site, print your details and the exact exam titles and years you want erased, sign it, and send it to AP Services by mail or fax. There is no fee, but cancellation is irreversible and your original exam fee is not refunded.1College Board. Cancel Scores – AP Students

What to Gather Before You Fill It Out

The form is short, but three details cause most of the delays when they’re wrong or missing. Have these ready:

  • Your AP ID, which appears on your AP student account and on any prior score reports.
  • Your school name and its six-digit school code. Your counselor can give you the code, or you can pull it from earlier College Board correspondence.
  • The full official title of each exam you want canceled, and the year you took it. “AP Calculus BC,” not “Calculus.” “AP U.S. History,” not “AP History.”

Getting the exam title precise matters. If you write something ambiguous, you risk either a rejected request or the wrong exam being deleted, and there is no undoing a deletion.

The June 15 Deadline

You can cancel a score at any time, but one date controls whether your designated college ever sees it. To stop a score from being sent to the college or scholarship program you selected through your free score send, the College Board must receive your cancellation by 11:59 p.m. ET on June 15 of the year you took the exam.1College Board. Cancel Scores – AP Students The free score send recipient is the institution you selected online through the College Board’s score-sending portal, not something you marked on an answer sheet.

If your request arrives after June 15, the score still gets erased from your permanent record, but the College Board will already have transmitted it during the standard July score release. Your designated college keeps whatever copy they received. The score disappears from every score report you send from that point on.3College Board. What Happens After You Submit

The College Board processes cancellation requests within 15 business days of receipt.4College Board. AP Score Cancellation Form Allow more time if you’re mailing from overseas. You won’t get a separate confirmation letter or email. The way you know it worked is to check your online AP score report and see that the score is gone.

How the cancellation appears depends on who’s looking. On the report you and your high school can see, the exam still shows up, but with no score next to it. On reports sent to colleges, universities, and scholarship programs, neither the exam name nor the score appears at all.1College Board. Cancel Scores – AP Students Admissions officers have no way to tell you ever sat for the exam.

Cancellation is permanent. Once a score is deleted it cannot be reinstated under any circumstances, and there is no appeal.1College Board. Cancel Scores – AP Students If you regret it later, your only option is to retake the exam in a future testing cycle.

Consider Withholding Before You Cancel

The College Board offers a separate option, score withholding, that many students confuse with cancellation. The two do different things, and choosing the wrong one can be either irreversible or expensive.

Cancellation permanently erases a score from College Board records. It’s free, it’s final, and it removes the exam from every future score report.1College Board. Cancel Scores – AP Students

Withholding hides a score from a specific college or scholarship program while keeping it in your account. It costs $10 per score per recipient, and you can lift the withhold later at no charge if you change your mind.5College Board. Withhold Scores – AP Students Withholds are requested through the AP Score Reporting portal starting in July after scores are released, not through the paper cancellation form.

If you’re unsure whether a low score will hurt your application, withholding keeps your options open. Cancellation makes sense only when you’re certain you never want the score to exist again.

Scores That Cannot Be Canceled

Archived AP scores cannot be canceled.3College Board. How Do I Stop a Score From Appearing on My Score Report The College Board archives scores older than a certain number of years, and once yours are archived the cancellation form won’t help. This mostly affects adults returning to college applications years after high school, not current test-takers.

A Note on AP Scholar Awards

AP Scholar Awards are calculated using the number of exams scored 3 or higher and the average score across all AP Exams taken.6College Board. Qualifying for an AP Scholar Award – AP Students The College Board does not publish guidance on how a canceled score affects award calculations, and it has not publicly addressed whether an award already granted is revoked if you later cancel a score that helped you qualify. If you’re near an award threshold, contact AP Services before you send the form.
