API certification is a credential issued by the American Petroleum Institute that qualifies individuals to inspect pressure vessels, piping, storage tanks, and pipelines at refineries, petrochemical plants, and related facilities. The three flagship inspector programs (API 510, 570, and 653) are administered through API’s Individual Certification Programs and accredited by the American National Standards Institute.1American Petroleum Institute. Individual Certification Programs To earn one, you need to meet education and experience thresholds, submit a verified application, and pass an exam that can run as long as 7.5 hours.
Which Certification You Need
The three core inspector credentials each cover a specific equipment category and its governing inspection code.
- API 510 — Pressure Vessel Inspector. Maintenance, inspection, repair, and alteration of stationary pressure vessels that hold gases or liquids under pressure.2American Petroleum Institute. API 510 – Pressure Vessel Inspector
- API 570 — Piping Inspector. In-service metallic piping systems carrying process fluids, hydrocarbons, and hazardous chemicals.3American Petroleum Institute. API 570 – Piping Inspector
- API 653 — Aboveground Storage Tank Inspector. Inspection, repair, alteration, and reconstruction of large aboveground petroleum storage tanks.4American Petroleum Institute. API 653 – Aboveground Storage Tank Inspector
Several additional certifications sit alongside the core three. API 580 covers risk-based inspection; anyone holding a current 510, 570, or 653 automatically qualifies to sit for it.5American Petroleum Institute. API 580 – Risk Based Inspection API 571 tests knowledge of damage mechanisms affecting fixed refining equipment.6American Petroleum Institute. API 571 – Corrosion and Materials API 1169 is the pipeline construction inspector credential, built around federal pipeline safety regulations at 49 CFR 192 and 49 CFR 195.7American Petroleum Institute. API 1169 – Pipeline Construction Inspector Narrower programs exist for source inspection (SIFE, SIRE, SIEE), thermal and electrical safety, and quality auditing; fees and formats vary.8American Petroleum Institute. Who Qualifies to Apply
Every certification requires a combination of education and inspection experience, and the two trade off against each other. For 510, 570, and 653, the tiers are:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering or technology: 1 year of relevant inspection experience.
- Two-year associate’s degree or certificate in engineering or technology: 2 years.
- High school diploma or equivalent: 3 to 5 years, depending on the specific certification.
- No formal education: 5 or more years.
The experience must involve directly performing or supervising inspection work on the equipment type the certification covers. General industry employment without hands-on inspection does not count. For API 580, holding a current 510, 570, or 653 satisfies eligibility outright, regardless of your education.5American Petroleum Institute. API 580 – Risk Based Inspection
How to Apply and What It Costs
Applications go through the API Individual Certification Programs portal. You create an account, enter your employment history, and upload supporting documents.9American Petroleum Institute. API ICP Certification Applications API runs random audits, and providing false information can result in a permanent ban from the program.
Employment Verification
For every employer you list, you need the name and business email address of both a supervisor and a manager or HR representative who can verify your experience. The system rejects public-domain addresses like Gmail or Hotmail. The two references cannot be the same person. Self-employed candidates may list clients instead.10American Petroleum Institute. ICP Application Submission User Guide Qualification decisions rest entirely on experience your employer confirms, so line up cooperative references before you start the application.
Fees
Initial certification for 510, 570, and 653 runs $875 for API members and $1,125 for non-members. API 1169 is $435 for members and $580 for non-members. Smaller certifications like 571 and 580 run roughly $380 to $440 for non-members.11American Petroleum Institute. API ICP Schedules and Fees Payment is handled online by credit card or electronic funds transfer.
Deadlines
Each exam window has a fixed application deadline, typically two to three months before testing opens. The September 2026 window for API 510, for example, closes to applications on July 3, 2026. Late applications are still accepted, but a $200 late fee is added on top of the certification cost.11American Petroleum Institute. API ICP Schedules and Fees
What the Exam Looks Like
Once your application is approved, API sends an authorization email with an Eligibility ID and instructions for scheduling through Prometric testing centers.12American Petroleum Institute. Core Inspector Exams
The 510, 570, and 653 exams share the same structure. Expect a 7.5-hour day: a short tutorial, a 2.75-hour closed-book section, a 45-minute lunch, and a 3.75-hour open-book section. The exam has 170 multiple-choice questions in total (110 closed-book, 60 open-book), of which 140 are scored.2American Petroleum Institute. API 510 – Pressure Vessel Inspector
The closed-book section tests retention of fundamental inspection principles. The open-book section measures how quickly you can navigate code documents under pressure. During that portion you work from digital PDFs of the permitted references on the testing computer. Physical books, personal notes, and paper are not allowed in the room.8American Petroleum Institute. API Individual Certification Programs The exact editions of the references you need appear on the Publications Effectivity Sheet for your exam window. API updates that sheet periodically, so confirm you are studying the right edition before test day.
Other Formats
Not every API exam follows the 7.5-hour pattern. API 1169, for example, runs 3 hours with 115 questions (100 scored, 15 pretest), and the references are provided on the testing computer rather than brought in by the candidate.7American Petroleum Institute. API 1169 – Pipeline Construction Inspector Check the Body of Knowledge document for your specific certification to confirm question count, time limit, and permitted materials.
If You Fail
If you don’t pass, you submit a new application and schedule for a future window. API does not publish a separate retest fee; the standard application fee applies. The same process applies if you fail to schedule within your assigned window after approval.12American Petroleum Institute. API Individual Certification Programs – Schedule Exams
Keeping the Certification Active
API 510, 570, and 653 certifications are valid for three years.8American Petroleum Institute. API Individual Certification Programs When the term is up, you can recertify either by sitting the exam again or by documenting Continuing Professional Development activities.14American Petroleum Institute. Recertification Requirements – Continuing Professional Development
The CPD path requires at least 24 hours of qualifying professional development during each three-year cycle, with no more than 16 hours from any single category. Activities must be relevant to the scope of your certification and logged in the API online portal. Separately, you need to maintain verified inspection experience for at least 20 percent of the preceding three years.
Recertification is cheaper than first-time certification. For 510, 570, and 653, members pay $745 and non-members pay $855.11American Petroleum Institute. API ICP Schedules and Fees
Grace Period and Expiration
You can apply to recertify starting 90 days before your certification expires. If you miss that window, a 90-day grace period after expiration gives you a last chance to apply, though late fees apply. Let the grace period lapse and the certification expires completely. At that point you have to submit a new application at full price and pass the full exam again as a first-time candidate.8American Petroleum Institute.
