Are UPS Drivers in a Union? Coverage, Dues, and Contract Pay

Yes, UPS drivers are in a union. They are represented by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters under the National Master UPS Agreement, a private-sector contract covering roughly 300,000 full-time and part-time UPS workers that runs through July 31, 2028 and sets their wages, benefits, safety standards, and workplace protections.1UPS. Which UPS Workers the Union Covers

Union representation at UPS extends across most frontline roles. Full-time package car drivers — the ones you see delivering to homes and businesses — are covered. So are feeder drivers who move tractor-trailers between distribution centers, and the part-time hub workers who sort and load. Part-timers get seniority-based protections that are unusual in logistics.

Management and supervisors are excluded. Under federal labor law, a “supervisor” is anyone with authority to hire, transfer, promote, discharge, discipline, or meaningfully direct other employees using independent judgment.3Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 29 U.S. Code 152 – Definitions Corporate staff in departments like finance or legal also fall outside the bargaining unit.

If you are newly hired, full union protection does not apply immediately. New hires serve a 30-working-day probationary period, during which UPS can let you go without going through the standard grievance process.4Teamsters. UPS Central Region Supplemental Agreement You earn the contractual wage during probation but do not get benefits like holiday pay or bidding rights. Once you complete the trial period, the grievance procedure and seniority rights kick in.

Do You Have to Join the Union?

It depends on your state. In states without right-to-work laws, employment at UPS is generally conditioned on becoming a Teamsters member and paying dues after probation ends. In the 26 states with right-to-work protections, you cannot be forced to join or pay dues to keep your job. Either way, the contract’s wages and protections cover you, because the agreement applies to every worker in the bargaining unit regardless of membership status.

Full members can vote on contract ratification, run for local union office, and participate in strike authorization votes. Non-members get the same pay and working conditions but have no vote in the decisions that shape those terms.

Union Dues and Initiation Fees

Members pay monthly dues and, when first joining, a one-time initiation fee. Many locals use a formula of 2.5 times your hourly wage per month. At $21.00 an hour, that comes to $52.50 a month. Dues rise with pay, so a full-time driver at top rate typically pays somewhere in the range of $100 to $120 a month, depending on the local’s formula.

Initiation fees vary by local. Some charge around $200 to $250 upfront with installment options; others set lower amounts or offer reductions for attending a new-member meeting. Your local can tell you the exact figures. Once you authorize it, dues come out of your paycheck automatically.

What the Contract Pays

The 2023–2028 agreement includes $7.50 per hour in general wage increases for full-time employees over the life of the contract, with $1.00 of that scheduled for 2026.5Teamsters. UPS National Master Tentative Agreement 2023-2028 Summary Changes and Improvements The top rate for experienced full-time package car drivers reaches $46.75 per hour effective August 1, 2026.

New drivers hired after August 1, 2023 move through a four-year progression to top rate:

  • Start: $23.00 per hour
  • After 12 months: $24.00 per hour
  • After 24 months: $25.00 per hour
  • After 36 months: $30.75 per hour
  • After 48 months: top rate

Part-time hub workers had their starting hourly wage raised from $15.50 to $21.00, with progression to $23.00 over the life of the contract.6Teamsters. UPS Teamsters 2023-2028 Tentative Agreement Highlights These are contractual minimums; some regional supplements pay more.

Overtime Protections and the 9.5 List

The 9.5 list is one of the most valuable protections for full-time drivers. Regular package car drivers can sign up through their local union each year. Once on the list, you cannot routinely be dispatched for more than 9.5 hours in a day.

If UPS works you past 9.5 hours on three or more days in one week, you can grieve it. The penalty is triple-time pay for all hours over 9.5 on any day that week. After repeated paid grievances, management has to meet with the union to fix your dispatch. If violations continue after that meeting, the penalty rises to quadruple-time pay.

Benefits, Holidays, and Safety

Health coverage is employer-funded. UPS Teamsters do not pay premiums for health insurance; the specific plans run through regional Teamster health and welfare trust funds. Pensions run through multi-employer Teamster pension trusts, and details depend on your region. The Western Conference of Teamsters Pension Trust, for example, approved a 1.6 percent bonus accrual rate through December 31, 2026, meaning participants there earn credits at a temporarily higher rate.7The Western Conference of Teamsters Pension Trust. On safety, the current contract required UPS to install exhaust heat shields in the cargo floor of delivery vehicles, which preliminary testing showed can reduce floor temperatures by up to 17 degrees Fahrenheit. The company also committed to forced-air ventilation pulling fresh air from the front of the vehicle into the cargo area. Both were slated for new vehicles and retrofits within 18 months of ratification.9UPS. UPS Agreement with Teamsters on Heat Safety Air conditioning is being phased in: the first 2,000 package cars are being retrofitted by June 1, 2026, with 5,000 total retrofitted vehicles dispatched to the hottest delivery areas by June 1, 2027, as part of a larger commitment to 28,000 new vehicles equipped with air conditioning.

Seniority and How Grievances Work

Seniority drives a lot of day-to-day life at UPS. Your seniority date determines route bidding, vacation picks, and layoff order. More time with the company means first choice, which directly affects your schedule and earnings.

Disputes go through a formal grievance procedure instead of straight to court. A union steward first meets with local management. If that fails, the case moves to area or regional grievance panels. Deadlocked cases involving national master language go to a National Master Panel for a final decision.10Teamsters. National Master United Parcel Service Agreement 2023-2028 You can challenge discipline, route assignments, or other contract violations without hiring a lawyer.

The contract itself has two layers. The national master agreement sets the floor, and regional supplements, local riders, and addenda handle area-specific rules like holiday schedules and overtime triggers.11International Brotherhood of Teamsters. How New Contracts Get Negotiated

Bargaining runs on the contract’s expiration cycle. Months before expiration, locals survey their members on priorities like wages, safety equipment, or overtime rules. A national negotiating committee compiles those proposals and presents them to UPS. Talks typically stretch across several months.

When negotiators reach a tentative deal, it goes to the full membership for a ratification vote by secret ballot. A majority of voting members has to approve it. The 2023–2028 contract passed with 86.3 percent in favor.12International Brotherhood of Teamsters. Teamsters Ratify Historic UPS Contract If members reject a deal, negotiators return to the table.

Before a contract expires, the union may also hold a strike authorization vote. That is separate from ratification: it gives leadership the authority to call a work stoppage if talks break down. A strong vote acts as leverage. The Teamsters held one ahead of the 2023 negotiations.
