Argentina Residency Requirements: Categories, RADEX, and DNI

Argentina’s residency requirements are set out in Migration Law 25.871, and they follow a common template across every category: a valid passport with a legal entry stamp, a clean criminal record from every country you have lived in during the previous three years, apostilled and translated identity documents, and proof that you fit one of the specific residency categories the law recognizes. Applications are filed online through the National Directorate of Migration’s RADEX portal, and most approvals take three to six months.

The Baseline Every Applicant Must Meet

Before category-specific rules come into play, Law 25.871 imposes the same core requirements on everyone.1Argentina.gob.ar. Ley de Migraciones 25871 You need a passport that is valid and stamped by Argentine border authorities on entry. You need official criminal background certificates from your home country and any other country where you have lived during the past three years. Those certificates must be issued by the relevant national authority, apostilled, and translated into Spanish before you submit them.

A conviction for a serious crime can lead to outright rejection. Because foreign background certificates can take weeks to arrive, request them early. The clean-record standard applies identically whether you are applying as a retiree, a remote worker, or the spouse of an Argentine citizen.

Temporary Residency Categories

Temporary residency generally runs one to three years and can be renewed or converted to permanent status. The category you pick depends on how you support yourself and your relationship to Argentina.

Rentista: Passive Income From Abroad

The Rentista visa is for people who live on passive foreign income such as rental payments, investment dividends, or royalties. You must show monthly income of at least five times Argentina’s minimum wage (the Salario Mínimo Vital y Móvil), which as of early 2026 sits at roughly ARS 1,610,000 per month. Because the minimum wage and the exchange rate move often, the practical threshold hovers around USD 1,500. The income needs to flow through formal banking channels, documented with statements or contracts showing that it is regular and ongoing.

Pensionado: Retirees on a Foreign Pension

The Pensionado category mirrors the Rentista but is limited to people drawing a pension from a foreign government, an international organization, or a private retirement fund. The income floor is the same five-times-minimum-wage figure. You provide pension verification letters and bank statements showing consistent monthly deposits.

Worker Visa With a Job Offer

If an Argentine employer has offered you a job, the worker visa requires a formal employment contract from a company registered with the DNM.2Cancillería Argentina. Work Visa – New Employment Contract The contract must comply with Argentine labor law and spell out position, salary, and duration. The employer effectively sponsors the visa, and the DNM verifies that the company is authorized to hire foreign workers. You cannot enter as a tourist and then look for work on this track; the contract has to exist before you apply.

Digital Nomad Visa

Created by Disposition 758/2022, the digital nomad visa allows remote workers employed by companies outside Argentina to stay for 180 days, with one extension of the same length. It is available only to nationals of countries that do not need a tourist visa to enter Argentina. You submit a resume and proof of your remote work arrangement through contracts or recent pay stubs. The extension is not automatic and must be requested before the initial period expires.

MERCOSUR and Associated Nationals

Citizens of MERCOSUR member states (Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay) and associated countries (Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and others) apply under the MERCOSUR Residency Agreement. They face fewer documentary hurdles, pay lower fees, and reach permanent residency faster than applicants from outside the bloc.

Family Reunification

Family ties open another route. Spouses, children, and parents of Argentine citizens qualify for family reunification. If the anchor family member is a foreign national with permanent residency rather than a citizen, eligibility extends to the spouse, parents, and children under 18 (or older children with a disability).3Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores, Comercio Internacional y Culto. Family Reunification Visa You prove the relationship with birth certificates, marriage certificates, or adoption decrees from the relevant civil registry, all apostilled and translated.

Apostille, Translation, and RADEX

Getting documents in order is where most applicants spend the bulk of their time. Every foreign-issued civil or criminal document must carry the Hague Apostille, which makes it legally valid in Argentina without further embassy legalization. If your home country has not joined the Hague Apostille Convention, you need full consular legalization instead, and that takes longer.

Once apostilled, any document not in Spanish must be translated by a public translator (Traductor Público) registered with the Colegio de Traductores Públicos in Argentina. Translations done abroad or by uncertified translators will not be accepted. The translator signs the document and has it legalized by the professional body, adding a final layer of authentication.

With that paperwork ready, you upload everything through RADEX (Radicación a Distancia de Extranjeros), the DNM’s online portal. Inside RADEX you complete a personal biography form, register an Argentine address, and attach scans of all documents. Any mismatch between what you upload and what you present in person later can trigger a formal request for clarification or delay approval.

Fees, Timeline, and the DNI

After you upload documents, you pay the migration fee (tasa de radicación), calculated in migration service units (UMSM) currently valued at ARS 1,000 each. MERCOSUR and associated nationals pay 50 UMSM (ARS 50,000); everyone else pays 100 UMSM (ARS 100,000).4Argentina.gob.ar. Cuadro Tasas Migratorias Add the DNI card fee (ARS 14,000 as of 2025) and the cost of the Argentine criminal background certificate.

Once payment posts, the system issues a provisional certificate called the Residencia Precaria. This lets you legally stay, work, and travel within Argentina while your file is being reviewed. The DNM then schedules an in-person appointment (citación) for fingerprints and a digital photograph at a migration office. That biometric step is mandatory.

After approval, the DNM prints your National Identity Card (DNI) and mails it to your registered address; someone needs to sign for it. The DNI carries a unique identification number that follows you throughout your residency. From RADEX submission to DNI delivery, the process typically runs three to six months, though DNM backlogs can stretch it.

Moving From Temporary to Permanent Residency

Permanent residency removes renewal deadlines and grants indefinite permission to live and work in Argentina. Non-MERCOSUR citizens must complete three years of continuous, lawful temporary residency before applying. MERCOSUR nationals qualify after two.1Argentina.gob.ar. Ley de Migraciones 25871

“Continuous” does not mean you cannot leave the country, but you are expected to spend the majority of each year on Argentine soil, generally at least 183 days. Extended absences can reset your timeline or raise questions about whether you genuinely live in Argentina. Your passport’s entry and exit stamps serve as the primary evidence of physical presence when you apply.

You will also submit a fresh Argentine criminal background certificate showing good conduct during your temporary period. The permanent DNI looks and functions like the temporary version but carries no expiration date, which makes it far easier to sign leases, open bank accounts, and access public services.

Tax Consequences You Should Know Before Applying

Residency changes your tax position in ways that catch many applicants off guard. Argentine tax residents owe income tax on worldwide earnings, not just income from Argentine sources. Non-residents pay tax only on Argentine-source income.

For foreign nationals, tax residency is triggered by 12 months of physical presence in Argentina. Short trips abroad do not pause that clock, but a single absence of more than 90 consecutive days resets the count entirely. Once you cross the threshold, foreign rental income, investment income, retirement distributions, and employment income from anywhere in the world all become taxable in Argentina.

Argentina also levies an annual wealth tax, Bienes Personales, on residents’ worldwide assets. For the 2024 fiscal year, assets below roughly ARS 293 million were exempt, with a higher exemption for a primary residence. Rates on assets above the threshold run from 0.50% to 1.25%, with lower rates for taxpayers classified as compliant. The exemption is adjusted annually for inflation. If you hold significant assets abroad, talk to an Argentine tax professional before establishing residency.

What Comes After Residency: Citizenship

Temporary or permanent residents can apply for Argentine citizenship by naturalization after two years of continuous legal residence. Decree 366/2025 (DNU 366/2025) moved the entire naturalization process out of the federal courts and into the DNM, and applications now run through the same RADEX portal used for residency.5KPMG. Argentina – New Online Process for Obtaining Citizenship by Naturalization

Under the new rules, “continuous” is read strictly: applicants cannot have left Argentina at any point during the two years preceding the application, and even a short trip abroad resets the clock. You must also be physically present in Argentina when you submit. Required documents include your DNI, an updated Argentine criminal record certificate, proof of employment or financial means, and your CUIT or CUIL tax identification number.

Decree 366/2025 also created an investment-based citizenship pathway that would bypass the residency duration requirement, but the Ministry of Economy had not yet published the criteria for a qualifying “relevant investment” as of late 2025.6United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. Argentina – Establishes a Citizenship-by-Investment Framework Until those regulations are finalized, the standard two-year residency route is the only operational path to naturalization.
