The ASWB exam is the standardized social work licensing test developed by the Association of Social Work Boards and required by state, provincial, and territorial licensing boards across the United States and Canada.1Association of Social Work Boards. Association of Social Work Boards – Section: Exam It comes in five levels tied to your education and career stage, costs $230 or $260 depending on the level, and consists of 170 multiple-choice questions split into two timed sections at a Pearson VUE testing center. Your local licensing board decides which level you qualify for and must authorize you before you can register with ASWB.2Association of Social Work Boards. Licensing Requirements by State or Province
Which Exam You Take
ASWB offers five categories. The Bachelors exam is for graduates with a BSW from an accredited institution. The Masters exam requires an MSW from an accredited institution. The Advanced Generalist and Clinical exams both require an MSW plus documented post-degree supervised practice experience; the Clinical license is the one that permits independent practice and private practice.3Association of Social Work Boards. Becoming a Licensed Social Worker The Associate exam shares its content outline with the Bachelors exam and appears in jurisdictions that license at the associate level.
Supervised-hour requirements for the Clinical and Advanced Generalist levels vary widely by jurisdiction. For clinical licensure, every one of the 56 U.S. and Canadian jurisdictions requires post-MSW supervised hours, but the total ranges from 1,500 to 6,400, with 3,000 being the most common figure.4Association of Social Work Boards. Clinical Social Work Supervision: Comparison of Supervision License Requirements Check your own board’s rules before you start logging hours; the wrong kind of supervision can cost months.
Your path to the exam starts at the board, not at ASWB. Before you can register, your state or provincial board must approve you and send your authorized exam category to ASWB. That typically means submitting transcripts, completing a background check, and paying a separate board application fee that varies by jurisdiction.
Format and Timing
Every ASWB exam has 170 multiple-choice questions delivered on a computer at a Pearson VUE testing center. The questions are split into two sections of 85, each with a two-hour time limit. When you finish the first section you submit your answers, which are then locked, and you get an optional break of up to 10 minutes before starting the second.5Association of Social Work Boards. Exam Break Policy Content distribution and difficulty are the same across the two halves.
Only 150 of the 170 questions count toward your score. The other 20 are pretest items ASWB uses for statistical analysis and future exam development. They are mixed in and indistinguishable, so treat every question as scored.6Association of Social Work Boards. ASWB Examination Guidebook
Questions are scenario-based. Many ask you to choose the “first,” “next,” or “best” action, so the exam tests judgment and prioritization more than recall. You can move through items at your own pace, flag questions, and revisit them before submitting each section. The room is tightly controlled: no outside materials, proctors and cameras present, and an electronic scratch pad on the computer for notes.6Association of Social Work Boards. Content and Scoring
Each level has its own content outline, but all are organized into three weighted domains. On the Bachelors and Associate exams, human development, diversity, and behavior in the environment accounts for 25%; on the Masters exam, 27%; on the Advanced Generalist, 23%; and on the Clinical exam, 24%.6Association of Social Work Boards. ASWB Examination Guidebook The rest is divided between assessment and planning and intervention and practice. On the Clinical exam, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning accounts for 30%, with interventions covering the balance.7Association of Social Work Boards. 2026 Social Work Licensing Exam Guidebook Specific competencies within each domain cover abuse and neglect, crisis intervention, psychopharmacology, evidence-based practice, cultural considerations, and professional ethics, among others. Read the content outline for your level in the ASWB Exam Guidebook before you start studying.
A blueprint change takes effect August 3, 2026. If your test date falls on or after that day, your exam follows the 2026 content outlines instead of the 2018 versions.8Association of Social Work Boards. There is no fixed percentage-correct cutoff. Because different exam forms contain different questions, ASWB uses a statistical equating process to keep the ability level required to pass consistent across versions. In practice, the number of correct answers needed to pass falls somewhere between 90 and 107 out of the 150 scored questions, depending on your form.9Association of Social Work Boards. Exam Scoring You see your result on the testing computer immediately after finishing the exam and a brief exit survey, and an unofficial score report appears in your ASWBCentral dashboard about 24 hours later.7Association of Social Work Boards. 2026 Social Work Licensing Exam Guidebook Official results go directly to the licensing board where you applied.10Association of Social Work Boards. Registering and Getting Your Authorization to Test
Registration fees are $230 for the Associate, Bachelors, or Masters exam and $260 for the Advanced Generalist or Clinical.11Association of Social Work Boards. Exam All fees are non-refundable, and payment must clear before you can schedule.12Association of Social Work Boards. Terms and Conditions These are separate from the application fee your board charged.
Before you open the registration portal, gather what you’ll need:
- Two valid, non-expired forms of ID. One must be a government-issued photo ID; the second must carry your signature. The name on both must match the name on your Authorization to Test exactly, or you will not be allowed to test and your fee is forfeited.13Association of Social Work Boards. On Exam Day
- Your Social Security or Social Insurance number, used for identification in the ASWB system.
- Confirmation that your board has already submitted your approved exam category to ASWB.
- A current email address, since the Authorization to Test is delivered by email.
When you type your name during registration, match it character for character to the primary photo ID you plan to bring. Hyphens, middle names, and suffixes all count. Once you’ve paid, fixing a name mistake means contacting both ASWB and Pearson VUE.
After payment, ASWB emails your Authorization to Test with a unique ID number. You use that number to schedule your appointment through ASWBCentral or Pearson VUE.14Association of Social Work Boards. Exam Appointments Center availability varies, so candidates in rural areas may face longer waits than those near metro testing centers.
The Authorization to Test carries an expiration date. If you can’t sit for the exam before it lapses, you can request a single extension of up to six months, subject to your board’s approval. ASWB recommends submitting the request within 30 days of expiration. Any Pearson VUE appointment already on the books is automatically cancelled when an extension is granted.15Association of Social Work Boards. Authorization to Test Expiration Date Extension Let it expire without asking for an extension and you lose the fee and start over.
Accommodations
If you need nonstandard testing arrangements because of a disability, health condition, or English as a second language, you must request and receive approval before you register and pay. Accommodations cannot be added to an existing appointment. Requests are handled in the order received and can take up to three weeks.16Association of Social Work Boards. Nonstandard Testing Arrangements
Approved ESL candidates may receive up to two additional hours of testing time and permission to bring in up to two print dictionaries: one bilingual word-to-word translation dictionary and one general English dictionary. Specialized dictionaries, including social work dictionaries, are not allowed, and translation dictionaries cannot contain definitions.17Association of Social Work Boards. Nonstandard Testing Arrangements Handbook ESL approvals don’t expire unless revoked, but whether an ESL-accommodated score is recognized is up to the licensing board. Disability and health-related requests run through a separate process in your ASWBCentral account.
Rescheduling, Cancellation, and Retakes
You can reschedule or cancel an appointment at no cost if you do it at least 24 hours before your scheduled time, through ASWBCentral or Pearson VUE.14Association of Social Work Boards. Exam Appointments Miss that window or no-show and you forfeit the full registration fee. Because all ASWB fees are non-refundable, cancelling early preserves your registration for a future date but does not get your money back.12Association of Social Work Boards. Terms and Conditions
If you don’t pass, you must wait 90 days before retaking, and you pay the full fee again for each attempt. ASWB suggests waiting seven to ten days after your previous attempt before re-registering so the system can process it. One narrow exception: if your score was within 10 correct answers of passing and your board participates in the waiver program, you can request permission to retake sooner.18Association of Social Work Boards. If You Fail the Exam It’s not automatic, and your board has to approve it before ASWB will authorize the earlier retake.
Official Practice Test
ASWB sells a full-length online practice test for $85 built from questions that previously appeared on actual licensing exams. Practice tests exist for the Associate, Bachelors, Masters, and Clinical levels but not for the Advanced Generalist. You need an Authorization to Test number before you can buy one.8Association of Social Work Boards. Online Practice Test
You get one timed attempt of four hours, matching the real exam. After that, you have 30 days to review every question, answer, and rationale, with filters by content area or by incorrect responses. Two versions exist: one aligned to the 2018 blueprints and one aligned to the 2026 blueprints. ASWB recommends waiting until you have an appointment scheduled before buying so you pick the version that matches your exam date.8Association of Social Work Boards. Online Practice Test The interface isn’t an exact copy of Pearson VUE’s, but the question content and difficulty reflect the live exam.
