Bahamas immigration policy allows citizens of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and several dozen other countries to visit without a visa for up to eight months, but anyone who wants to work or settle in the islands must apply for a specific permit or residency status under the Immigration Act.1Statute Law of The Bahamas. Bahamas Code Chapter 191 – Immigration Act The framework is protectionist by design: tourists and investors are welcomed, but the labor market is shielded, so a foreigner cannot simply arrive and take a job.
Visiting the Bahamas
U.S., Canadian, and British citizens do not need a visa to enter as tourists.2Bahamas Immigration Department. Entry Requirements Several dozen other nationalities also qualify, though the list changes periodically. If your country is not on the exempt list, apply for a visitor visa through a Bahamian consulate before you travel.
The eight-month cap is a maximum, not a guarantee. The immigration officer at the port of entry decides how long you may stay and stamps the period into your passport. That stamp is your legal authorization, and the officer can grant less. You must be able to show funds sufficient to support yourself for the whole stay.
Every visitor needs a valid passport and a return or onward ticket. As a general rule, your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond your planned departure from the Bahamas. U.S. and British passport holders can technically enter with less, but this creates problems for onward travel.3Embassy of the Bahamas to the United States. FAQ Missing any of these items can result in denial of entry.
If you need more time than the officer gave you, apply for an extension of stay at a Department of Immigration office before your current authorization expires. The extension costs $200 and must be filed while your status is still valid.4Bahamas Immigration Department. Extension of Stay
Working in the Bahamas
Anyone who wants to earn money in the Bahamas needs a work permit, whether as an employee, contractor, or performer. A tourist stamp does not authorize work, and neither does most residency status. The permit system splits into two tracks based on how long the job will last.
Short-Term Work Permits
A short-term permit covers engagements of up to 90 days.5Bahamas Immigration Department. Short Term Work Permit The employer writes to the Director of Immigration explaining the position, the reason a foreign worker is needed, and the time required. The applicant supplies a passport copy with at least six months validity and two passport-sized photos.6Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Applying for Short Term Work Permit Extending beyond 90 days is not a simple renewal; the employer must file a fresh application with the full documentation required for a long-term permit.
Annual Work Permits
For jobs lasting more than 90 days, the employer applies for an annual work permit. This is where the labor-protection features of the system show. The employer must obtain a Labour Certificate from the Department of Labour and advertise the position in a nationally circulated newspaper for three consecutive days.7Bahamas Immigration Department. Work Permit (New) These steps let the government test whether a qualified Bahamian could take the role. Top executives in Scale 1 (CEOs, managing directors) and certain Scale 2 consultants and owner’s representatives are exempt from the advertising requirement.
Fees are tied to the occupation and vary sharply across nine tiers:8Bahamas Immigration Department. Immigration Fee Scale

Shorter engagements are prorated: one-fifty-second of the annual fee per week for periods of a month or less, and one-twelfth per month for periods between one and eleven months. Workers employed by religious, educational, or charitable organizations, along with certain film crews approved by the Minister of Tourism, pay no fee at all.
Remote Work Under BEATS
Foreign remote workers and college students who earn from outside the country can apply for the Bahamas Extended Access Travel Stay (BEATS) permit, which allows a stay of up to one year and can be renewed annually for a maximum of three years. The permit does not authorize local employment, only work performed remotely for a foreign employer or study at a foreign institution. Individual professionals pay $1,025, students pay $525, and each dependent family member costs $500 plus a $25 application fee.9Bahamas Ministry of Tourism & Aviation. Living in the Bahamas Without Working
Retirees, students, and people living on outside income use different categories. None of these automatically grant work rights.
Permit to Reside
The Permit to Reside, sometimes called the Annual Permit, is for non-Bahamians who want to live in the country for reasons other than employment. It is renewed each year using the First Schedule Form 1 application, available on the Department of Immigration website.10Bahamas Immigration Department. Permit To Reside Children attending school in the Bahamas fall under this category and must submit a letter confirming enrollment; home-schooled children have to be registered with the Ministry of Education.
Home Owner’s Identification Card
If you own a home in the Bahamas but keep a primary residence abroad, apply for a Home Owner’s Identification Card. It functions as a residence permit and eases re-entry by confirming your status as a lawful property owner.11Bahamas Immigration Department. Home Owner Identification The application requires a $200 non-refundable fee, proof of current real property tax payments, and a registered deed of conveyance. First-time applicants should not be in the country while their application is being processed.
Permanent Residence
A Certificate of Permanent Residence gives the holder the legal right to live in the Bahamas indefinitely. The processing fee is $200, and the application requires police and medical certificates, character references, and proof of current immigration status.12Bahamas Immigration Department. Permanent Residence The certificate issuance fee for a standard applicant is $15,000.8Bahamas Immigration Department. Immigration Fee Scale
Long-term work permit holders pay less. Ten to twenty years of qualifying residence brings the certificate fee down to $10,000, and twenty or more years can drop it as low as $2,000, depending on employment category.
Economic Permanent Residence
Investors can apply for accelerated consideration by committing at least $1,000,000, either to Bahamian real estate or to zero-coupon bonds issued by the Central Bank of the Bahamas. The threshold rose from $750,000 effective January 1, 2025.13Fragomen. Increased Investment Amount for Economic Certificate of Permanent Residence Category The investment must be held for at least ten years.
The certificate fee depends on whether you request the right to work. Economic Permanent Residence with the right to operate your own business costs $25,000; the same status without work rights costs $20,000. Both are separate from the $200 application fee.
Spouses and Children
A non-Bahamian who marries a Bahamian citizen can apply for a Resident Spouse Permit, which grants the right to both live and work in the Bahamas. The applicant must be living with the Bahamian spouse and have been married for less than five years when filing.14Bahamas Immigration Department. Resident Spouse Permit After five years of marriage, the foreign spouse may pursue citizenship through a separate process.
Spouses of work permit holders and permanent residents do not automatically receive permission to work. They typically need their own work permit or a Permit to Reside. Children of foreign residents attending school in the Bahamas need a Permit to Reside with a letter confirming enrollment. If a child arrives without both parents, the accompanying parent or guardian must provide evidence of legal custody.
Documents Every Application Shares
Most applications require the same core set of documents:
- A police certificate issued no more than six months before submission, covering five years of residence (required for applicants aged 14 and older)
- A medical certificate dated within 30 days of submission
- Two color passport-sized photos, 2×2 inches, taken within six months, with the applicant’s name printed on the back
- A signed, readable copy of the passport biographical page with at least two months of remaining validity
- Two character references from reputable people in the applicant’s community, including phone numbers and email addresses
Permanent residence applications add birth certificates, any marriage certificate, proof of current immigration status, and proof of real property tax payment for Bahamian property owners.12Bahamas Immigration Department. Permanent Residence
Foreign-language documents must include certified English translations, and each translation needs a Bahamian $10 postage stamp affixed to it. Birth certificates and other vital records issued outside the Bahamas must be apostilled in the country of origin before submission.15Ministry of Foreign Affairs – The Bahamas. Consular Division Information Brochure Skipping the apostille step is one of the most common reasons for processing delays, and the Department will not waive it.
Timelines and Fees
Applications go to the Department of Immigration headquarters in Nassau with the applicable processing fee. Some can be started through the government’s online portal, but most still require in-person submission of originals. The $200 non-refundable fee applies to permanent residence, home owner’s card, and extension-of-stay applications, payable by credit card, debit card, postal order, money order, or bank-certified check.
If your application does not require an interview or additional documentation, the Department estimates 8 to 12 weeks for a decision.16Bahamas Immigration Department. How long does the application process take? Applications that trigger interviews or supplemental document requests take longer, sometimes several months. Economic permanent residence applications, which involve investment verification, tend to fall on the longer end. Successful applicants receive a formal approval letter with the terms of their status and any remaining permit fees due.
Overstays, Refusals, and Appeals
Staying past the date stamped in your passport or the expiration of your permit is a criminal offense under the Immigration Act, carrying a fine of up to $3,000, imprisonment for up to two years, or both.1Statute Law of The Bahamas. Bahamas Code Chapter 191 – Immigration Act Immigration officers may question anyone they reasonably believe is not a Bahamian citizen and detain people who cannot prove valid status.
The Minister of Immigration can issue a deportation order against anyone who entered or remained in the country illegally, was convicted of a serious offense, or whose presence is deemed contrary to the public good. A person who was lawfully present before the order was issued has seven days from receipt to file a written appeal to the Governor-General. During that seven-day window, the government cannot place the person on a departing ship or aircraft.
If a residency or permit application is refused, the Department issues a refusal letter by mail or email explaining the reasons and next steps. Unless the applicant has been reclassified into a different status, they must wrap up their affairs and leave the Bahamas within 21 days of receiving the refusal.17Bahamas Immigration Department. If my application is refused, will I be required to leave the country? In some cases, immediate departure is required, and the refusal letter will say which rules apply.
