Bahamas Work Permit Requirements, Fees and Documents

To work legally in the Bahamas, a foreign national needs a work permit issued by the Department of Immigration before starting the job. The core Bahamas work permit requirements are a genuine job offer from a Bahamian employer, proof that no qualified Bahamian was available to fill it, a full personal documentation package (passport, police certificate, medical certificate, photos, and a notarized Form 1), and payment of a fee scaled to the role. Fees run from $500 for farm laborers to $16,275 for top executives, and annual permits typically take 8 to 12 weeks to process.

Which Permit You Need

The requirements depend first on how long the job lasts. Work of 1 to 30 days uses a simpler short-term application form; 31 to 90 days uses the more detailed First Schedule Form 1. Short-term decisions are usually issued within seven days of a complete submission.1Government of The Commonwealth of The Bahamas. Short Term Work Permit, Applying for

Anything longer falls under the annual (long-term) work permit, which covers up to one year and can be renewed. This is the standard permit for full-time positions, and it carries the heaviest documentation load, including a Labour Certificate from the Department of Labour.2Bahamas Immigration Department. The Bahamian-First Labour Test

Before an employer can sponsor a foreign worker, the government wants evidence that no qualified Bahamian is available for the role. The employer must advertise the vacancy in a Bahamian daily newspaper for a minimum of three days.3Department of Labour. Certification of Vacancies to Hire Non-Bahamians If no suitable local candidate responds, the Department of Labour issues a Labour Certificate confirming the search came up empty. Copies of the advertisements and any interview results go into the work permit application itself.4Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Applying for a Long Term Work Permit

There are a few exceptions. Top executives in Fee Scale 1 (CEO, president, managing director, and similar) do not need a Labour Certificate, and neither do owner’s representatives or consultants in Fee Scale 2. Domestic roles in Fee Scale 8 such as maids, gardeners, and handymen now require Labour Certificates for both new permits and renewals as of September 2025, with renewals every two years.5Bahamas Immigration Department. Employers are also expected to name a Bahamian understudy who trains alongside the foreign worker and is expected to take over the role in time.2Bahamas Immigration Department. Work Permit (New)

Documents You Need to Submit

The application is split between the employer and the applicant, and missing pieces are the most common reason a file gets kicked back.

From the Employer

The employer provides a letter of request to the Director of Immigration explaining why the position requires a foreign worker, along with a copy of the company’s valid business license, certificate of incumbency, or certificate of incorporation. The Labour Certificate and copies of the newspaper advertisements complete the employer’s side.2Bahamas Immigration Department. Work Permit (New)

From the Applicant

  • First Schedule Form 1, legible, notarized, with a B$10.00 Bahamian postage stamp affixed.
  • A copy of the biographical data page of a current passport with at least two months of remaining validity. The passport must be signed and readable.
  • Two recent passport-sized color photographs (2×2 inches) on a white background, taken within six months, with the applicant’s name printed on the back.
  • An original police certificate issued no earlier than six months before the application, covering five years of residence. Required for applicants age 14 and older.
  • An original medical certificate dated no earlier than 30 days before submission.

Any document in a language other than English needs a certified English translation, and each translated document needs its own B$10.00 Bahamian postage stamp attached.

Authenticating Documents From Abroad

Police certificates and other legal documents issued outside the Bahamas need authentication before the Department of Immigration will accept them. For countries in the Hague Convention, the simplest path is an apostille from the relevant authority in your home country. In the United States, that is the Secretary of State’s office. A document that already carries an apostille needs no further action from a Bahamian consulate.6Ministry of Foreign Affairs – The Bahamas. Apostilles/Legalization of Documents

Without an apostille, the document must be notarized by a Bahamian consular officer, and that step first requires a notarial certificate from the county or circuit court clerk in the jurisdiction where the document was originally notarized. How Much a Permit Costs

Annual work permit fees are set by job classification on a nine-tier scale. The anchor points:

  • Scale 1, $16,275: top executives including CEO, president, managing director, CFO, vice president, district manager, and project manager.
  • Scale 2, $13,125: managers, professionals, and specialists such as attorneys, accountants, engineers, doctors, IT specialists, and hotel directors.
  • Scale 8, $2,000: general workers, gardeners, handymen, kitchen helpers, janitors, and live-in maids.
  • Scale 9, $500: farm laborers working for active registered farmers.

Scales 3 through 7 cover mid-level roles such as supervisors, skilled tradespeople, and semi-skilled workers, with fees between those anchors. On top of the permit fee, every annual application carries a $200.00 non-refundable processing fee at submission.2Bahamas Immigration Department. Where to File and How Long It Takes

Applications can be filed in person at Department of Immigration offices in Nassau or Freeport, or electronically through the department’s eServices Online Portal.8Bahamas Immigration Department. eServices Online Portal Every field on the forms should match the supporting documents exactly; inconsistencies between Form 1 and a passport or police certificate are a common reason applications come back for corrections.

Short-term decisions typically come within seven days. Annual work permits, if no interview or additional documents are needed, usually take 8 to 12 weeks.9Bahamas Immigration Department. How Long Does the Application Process Take? The board reviews whether the offer is genuine, whether the Labour Certificate process was followed, and whether hiring a foreign national is justified.

Once approved, remaining permit fees are paid before the physical card is issued. The card names the employer and lists the expiration date. You may legally work only for that employer, in that role. Changing employer or role during the permit period requires a new application.

Renewals and National Insurance

Annual permits expire after one year, and renewal is not automatic. A renewal package needs a fresh medical certificate dated within 30 days, an updated police certificate, new passport photos, the $200.00 processing fee, a copy of the previous permit (front and back), and a current copy of the employer’s business license or certificate of incorporation.5Bahamas Immigration Department. Work Permit (Renewal)

One document catches people out: renewals require a letter from the National Insurance Board confirming that the applicant’s NIB contributions are current. Anyone employed in the Bahamas for 30 days or more must provide this proof.5Bahamas Immigration Department. Work Permit (Renewal)

That means NIB registration is itself part of working legally in the Bahamas. Every worker, including foreign permit holders, must register with the National Insurance Board using a passport or birth certificate and a completed Registration Form (R.4), either just before or immediately after starting the job.10National Insurance Board (NIB). Registration and Contributions Employees contribute 4.65% of wages and employers 6.65%, on weekly earnings up to an insurable ceiling of $810 per week.11National Insurance Board of The Bahamas. Contributions Your employer deducts your share and remits both portions; if they fall behind, arrears can hold up your next renewal.

Family Members Are a Separate Application

A work permit covers the worker only. Spouses and children under 18 apply for a Permit to Reside on their own First Schedule Form 1, with passport copies, police certificates, medical certificates, two passport photos, and two character references from persons of good standing.12Bahamas Immigration Department. Permit to Reside

Spouses provide a certified marriage certificate. Children provide a certified birth certificate naming both parents; a child not accompanied by both parents needs legal custody documentation, and children must show proof of enrollment in a Bahamian school or, if homeschooled, registration with the Ministry of Education.12Bahamas Immigration Department. Permit to Reside The processing fee is $200.00 per application. The annual permit fee is $300 per dependent, or $250 for dependent parents, with processing of roughly 8 to 12 weeks.7Bahamas Immigration Department. Immigration Fee Scale The Department of Immigration advises that first-time dependent applicants should not be in the Bahamas while the application is pending.

If You’re Self-Employed

Foreign nationals who want to run their own business face a different route. Before a work permit application, the project must be submitted to the Bahamas Investment Authority (BIA), meet a minimum capital investment of B$500,000, and stay out of sectors reserved for Bahamian ownership.13Government of The Commonwealth of The Bahamas. Establishing a Business in The Bahamas BIA approval effectively replaces the Labour Certificate step, and the work permit application then follows the standard process.
