To renew a Barbados passport at a consulate, submit a completed application (Form A for adults, Form B for children under 16) with a guarantor’s certification, your expired passport, an original birth certificate or other proof of citizenship, your Barbados national ID card, two passport-sized photographs, and the mission’s fee to the Barbadian High Commission, Embassy, or Consulate General that covers your area of residence. The mission forwards your paperwork to the Chief Immigration Officer in Bridgetown, who actually issues the passport, so plan on about six weeks from the day the mission receives a complete application.1Barbados Immigration Department. Which Mission Handles Your Renewal
Your country of residence determines where you apply. Citizens in the United States use the Consulate General in New York or the Consulate General in Miami, depending on the state. Those in Canada use the Consulate General in Toronto or the High Commission in Ottawa. Applicants in the United Kingdom and Europe generally work through the Barbados High Commission in London.2Barbados Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Consulates General
If your consular district isn’t obvious, contact the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade before you send anything. A misrouted application costs weeks.
Documents to Gather
- Your current passport, even if it has already expired.
- The original birth certificate or other proof of citizenship. Photocopies are not accepted.
- Your Barbados national ID card.
- Original marriage certificate or divorce decree, if your name has changed since your last passport.
- Two passport-sized photographs, taken by a professional photographer, no larger than 5 cm by 5 cm.1Barbados Immigration Department. Passports
One of the two photographs must be endorsed on the back by your guarantor, confirming it is a true likeness of you.3Barbados Immigration Department. Application Form A – Barbados Passport Application for Persons Over Sixteen Years of Age
The Form and the Guarantor
Adults aged 16 and over complete Form A. Children under 16 use Form B. Both are available from the Barbados Immigration Department website or from your nearest mission.3Barbados Immigration Department. Application Form A – Barbados Passport Application for Persons Over Sixteen Years of Age Fill it out by hand, in ink, using block capital letters. Typed or digitally completed forms are rejected.
Section 12 of Form A (Section 10 of Form B) must be signed by a guarantor who knows you personally and who holds one of the following positions:
- Passport Officer, Member of Parliament, or Magistrate
- Justice of the Peace or Minister of Religion
- Police Officer of gazetted rank
- Bank Manager, Medical Practitioner, or Lawyer
- School Principal or Senior Civil Servant
The guarantor also signs the back of one photograph, endorsing it as a true photograph of you. The form asks how long the guarantor has known you, but sets no minimum period. Finding an eligible guarantor abroad tends to be the slowest part of assembling the application, so start on this early.3Barbados Immigration Department. Fees
The base domestic fee is Bds$150 for an adult passport and Bds$100 for a child’s passport.1Barbados Immigration Department. Passports Overseas missions charge their own rates and are authorized to collect the equivalent in local currency or in U.S. dollars, so expect to pay more than the domestic figure.4Barbados Parliament. Consular Services Fees (Amendment) Bill, 2006 Contact your mission directly for the exact amount before preparing payment.
Most missions accept money orders or certified checks made payable to the mission or to the Chief Immigration Officer. Few accept cash or personal checks. Confirm the accepted method when you call.
Submitting the Application
Applicants aged 16 and over are generally expected to appear in person at their designated mission. Some missions accept applications by certified mail, but this varies. Call ahead to confirm whether you need an appointment and whether mail-in is available.5Official Website of the Barbados Government. Apply for a Passport
Before submitting, check off the full package: completed form in block capitals, both photographs with one endorsed by your guarantor, your expired passport, the original birth certificate, your national ID card, any name-change documents, and payment in the accepted form. One missing item resets the clock.
Processing Time and Collection
Standard processing runs about six weeks from the date the mission receives a complete application.6The Barbados Consulate. The Barbados Consulate That timeline starts when the mission forwards your file to Bridgetown, so allow for transit at both ends. Submitting eight to ten weeks before any planned travel builds in a reasonable buffer.
Passports must be collected in person from the mission once they arrive. If illness, physical disability, or age prevents you from appearing, another person may collect on your behalf with a letter signed by you authorizing the pickup, a second letter signed and stamped by a Notary Public or Justice of the Peace, your national ID card, and their own ID.1Barbados Immigration Department. Passports Some missions will mail the passport back if you include a prepaid, self-addressed return envelope or courier waybill with your original application.
Renewing a Child’s Passport
Children under 16 apply on Form B, completed by a parent or legal guardian. Written parental consent is required for any passport issued to someone under 18, including 16- and 17-year-olds using Form A. If the person applying on the child’s behalf isn’t a parent, written consent from both parents is required, and anyone with legal custody in place of a parent must produce the court order.7Barbados Immigration Department. Children over 16 cannot be included on a parent’s passport and must have their own. The base fee for a child’s passport is Bds$100.1Barbados Immigration Department. Passports
If Your Passport Was Lost, Stolen, or Damaged
A replacement is not the same as a renewal. Report the loss or theft to the local police first and obtain a copy of the report. Submit that report along with a letter you write describing how, where, and when the passport was lost, stolen, or damaged, plus the standard application materials: completed Form A or B, two photos, birth certificate or proof of citizenship, and your Barbados ID card. If you still have any part of a damaged passport, submit it too.8Barbados Immigration Department. Replacement of Passports
Failing to file a police report can result in a higher fee under the Passports and Travel Documents (Fees) Act, so report the loss immediately even if you think the passport may just be misplaced.9Barbados Law Courts. Passports and Travel Documents (Fees) Act, Cap 81 If you need to travel before a replacement can be issued, ask the mission about an emergency passport, which the Immigration Department can issue as a separate document on a faster timeline.
