BCaBA Certification: Requirements, Supervision, and Recertification

BCaBA certification requirements fall into three stages: a bachelor’s degree paired with 225 hours of behavior-analytic coursework, between 1,000 and 1,300 hours of supervised fieldwork, and a passing score on the Behavior Analyst Certification Board’s computer-based exam. Once certified, a Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst practices only under the ongoing supervision of a BCBA and must recertify every two years with continuing education.

Degree and Coursework

You need a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. The major itself is not restricted, but on top of the degree you must complete 225 hours of behavior-analytic coursework at a qualifying institution that has a designated Pathway 2 Program Contact. That contact signs a Coursework Attestation confirming you finished every required content area.1Behavior Analyst Certification Board. Recent and Upcoming Changes to BACB Requirements Pathway 2 replaced the older Verified Course Sequence system, which sunset at the end of 2025.2Association for Behavior Analysis International. The 225 hours break down across six content areas:3Behavior Analyst Certification Board. Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst Handbook

  • Ethics, professionalism, and the BACB code-enforcement system: 30 hours, with at least 15 taught in standalone courses
  • Philosophical underpinnings, concepts, and principles: 45 hours
  • Measurement, data display, interpretation, and experimental design: 30 hours
  • Behavior assessment: 45 hours
  • Behavior-change procedures and intervention selection: 60 hours
  • Personnel supervision and management: 15 hours

Every course must be completed within the ten years before your application year, and you must have earned a C or higher in each one. Coursework older than that will not count no matter how well you did in it, so career changers returning to the field after a long gap should plan to retake content.

Supervised Fieldwork

Two fieldwork tracks are available. Standard Supervised Fieldwork requires 1,300 total hours with 5% of each month in direct supervision. Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork requires 1,000 hours but doubles the monthly supervision contact to 10%.3Behavior Analyst Certification Board. Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst Handbook

Hours are logged as either unrestricted or restricted activities. Unrestricted work mirrors what a behavior analyst does when designing and overseeing programs, such as conducting assessments, writing treatment plans, and analyzing data. Restricted activities involve direct service delivery, like running teaching sessions, and are capped at a portion of your total. Context matters: data collection during a routine teaching session is restricted, while data collection as part of a functional assessment is unrestricted. The supervising BCBA categorizes each activity.4Behavior Analyst Certification Board. FAQs About BACB Supervised Fieldwork Requirements

Documentation and Audit Risk

Each month of fieldwork is recorded on a Monthly Fieldwork Verification Form signed by you and your supervisor. The form captures independent hours, individual and group supervision received, and your supervisor’s certification number. It must be signed by the last day of the month following the supervision period. Miss that window and those hours are gone.5Behavior Analyst Certification Board. 2027 Monthly Fieldwork Verification Form – Individual Supervisor

A Final Fieldwork Verification Form summarizes the entire experience at the end. Both parties must keep copies for at least seven years, and the BACB can audit them at any point during that period. Submitting falsified fieldwork information triggers the code-enforcement process, and the sanctions are severe: the board can invalidate your certification, revoke your eligibility to sit for any BACB exam for a minimum of five years, and refuse to count any fieldwork accrued during the revocation.6Behavior Analyst Certification Board. Application and Exam

When coursework and fieldwork are done, you create an account on the BACB’s online portal and upload finalized degree transcripts along with all signed fieldwork verification forms. A non-refundable application fee covers the background check and educational verification. Approval produces an Authorization to Test notification.

You schedule the exam through Pearson VUE, the BACB’s testing provider, and pay a separate $125 scheduling fee at that stage.7Pearson VUE. Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) The exam is computer-based: 150 scored questions and 25 unscored pilot questions pulled from nine content domains. The heaviest-weighted areas are behavior-change procedures (15%), measurement and data interpretation (13%), and intervention development and monitoring (13%).8Behavior Analyst Certification Board. BCBA and BCaBA Exams – Immediate Results and Year-Round Availability The passing standard is criterion-referenced and set by a panel of subject matter experts, so the number of correct answers needed varies by form. Historically, first-time pass rates have landed between roughly 49% and 61%, and retake rates between about 22% and 32%.10Behavior Analyst Certification Board. Practicing Under BCBA Supervision

Passing the exam does not make you an independent practitioner. A BCaBA must have a qualified BCBA listed as supervisor in the BACB’s system at all times. If that relationship ends and no replacement is on file, your certification goes inactive immediately. An inactive BCaBA cannot practice, bill for services, supervise RBTs, or hold themselves out as certified, and the public registry will show the inactive status along with the reason.3Behavior Analyst Certification Board. The supervisory relationship is formalized through a written contract signed before services begin. The contract must address the nature and frequency of supervision meetings, how the supervisor will observe your work, your responsibility to report your caseload, methods for documenting supervision and retaining written feedback, any supervision fees, the conditions under which either party can end the relationship, and signatures from both parties. Client consent for the supervisor’s involvement in their case is also required.

For the first 1,000 hours of post-certification practice, at least 5% of your monthly service hours must be direct supervision contact. After that, the floor drops to 2% per month. These are minimums; a supervisor can require more based on your experience or caseload complexity. The supervising BCBA carries professional responsibility for your clinical work, which is why regular case review is the norm rather than a formality.

Supervising RBTs at the Same Time

While receiving supervision from a BCBA, you also supervise the Registered Behavior Technicians who deliver treatment directly to clients. The BACB authorizes BCaBAs to serve as RBT supervisors and holds them responsible for the quality of the services those technicians provide.11Behavior Analyst Certification Board. RBT Handbook In practice that means observing sessions, auditing data collection for accuracy, giving performance feedback, and training new staff on intervention plans.

There is no fixed cap on how many RBTs you can supervise. The standard is that supervisors take on only as much supervisory work as they can perform effectively, weighing their own caseload, each RBT’s hours, client complexity, and the time realistically available.12Behavior Analyst Certification Board. Board Certified Behavior Analyst Handbook Taking on too many supervisees to cover organizational staffing gaps is a common failure mode, and every supervisory action you take remains subject to your own supervising BCBA’s review.

Ethics Code and Self-Reporting

All BCaBAs are bound by the BACB’s Ethics Code for Behavior Analysts, which rests on four core principles: benefit others, treat others with compassion and dignity, behave with integrity, and practice within your competence.13Behavior Analyst Certification Board. Ethics Code for Behavior Analysts Practicing within competence means that even where your certification technically allows a type of work, you should decline it if you lack the training or experience to do it well.

Certificants must self-report certain events to the BACB within 30 days. These include believing you have violated an ethics standard, being named in an investigation related to your professional role, receiving criminal charges or court orders, and having a physical or mental health condition or substance use disorder that could pose a client risk.14Behavior Analyst Certification Board. Self-Reporting Failing to self-report when the rule requires it is itself a separate ethics violation.

Recertification Every Two Years

BCaBA certification runs on a two-year cycle. Before each cycle closes, you submit a recertification application and 20 continuing education units. At least 4 of those CEUs must cover ethics, and if you supervise others you need an additional 3 CEUs in supervision specifically.15Behavior Analyst Certification Board. 2027 BCaBA Requirements Missing the deadline or the CEU totals lapses the credential.

State Licensing Is Separate

BACB certification is not a license. Most U.S. states now require behavior analysts to hold a state-issued license in addition to their BACB credential before they can see clients.16Behavior Analyst Certification Board. Licensure of Behavior Analysis in the United States Requirements, fees, and renewal timelines differ by state, and initial application and biennial renewal fees typically run from around $75 to $300 depending on the jurisdiction. Practicing without the required state license, even with valid BACB certification, can draw disciplinary action from both the state board and the BACB, so check your state’s licensing board before taking on your first client.

Changes Taking Effect in 2027
