Best Buy Renewal Charge: Cancel, Refund, and Dispute

A Best Buy renewal charge on your statement is almost always an auto-renewed membership or protection plan billed to the card on file: My Best Buy Plus at $29.99 a year, My Best Buy Total at $179.99 a year, or a Geek Squad Protection plan on a specific product. You can turn off auto-renewal in your Best Buy account in about a minute, and if you cancel within 60 days of the renewal you’re entitled to a full refund, minus the value of any member benefits you used.

Identify the Charge

Best Buy uses several different descriptors depending on the service, and none are especially clear. Membership renewals commonly appear as BESTBUY RENEWAL, MY BEST BUY PLUS, MY BEST BUY TOTAL, or BEST BUY TOTALTECH. Geek Squad Protection plans show up as BESTBUY GSP MTH, GEEKSQUAD PLAN, GEEKSQUAD RENEW, or BEST BUY PROTECTION.

The dollar amount usually tells you which service billed you. A $29.99 charge points to My Best Buy Plus. A $179.99 charge points to My Best Buy Total. Smaller recurring amounts in the $5 to $25 range typically indicate a monthly Geek Squad Protection plan on a specific product. Sales tax on membership fees varies by state, so the total may run slightly above the listed price.

Which Best Buy Service Is Billing You

Four programs at Best Buy bill automatically. It’s easy to forget you enrolled, particularly if you signed up at the register during a purchase months or years ago.

  • My Best Buy Plus is a paid membership offering member pricing and free shipping on qualifying orders, currently $29.99 per year.
  • My Best Buy Total is the premium tier at $179.99 per year, adding around-the-clock Geek Squad tech support and product protection including AppleCare+.
  • Geek Squad Protection plans are standalone extended warranties on specific products such as laptops, TVs, and appliances, billed monthly or annually depending on enrollment.
  • Software subscriptions purchased through Best Buy, including antivirus and productivity programs, sometimes auto-renew through the retailer rather than the software publisher.

Turn Off Auto-Renewal

The fastest route is online. Log into your account at BestBuy.com and go to your Plans and Subscriptions page at BestBuy.com/Services/PlanList. Turn off the auto-renewal toggle for the membership or plan you want to stop. A confirmation prompt will tell you when your benefits expire.2Best Buy. My Best Buy

You can also call 1-888-BEST BUY (1-888-237-8289) and choose the option for memberships or billing.2Best Buy. My Best Buy Ask for a confirmation number before you hang up. That number is your proof if the charge appears again next year.

Turning off auto-renewal doesn’t cut off your benefits immediately. You keep access through the end of the billing period you already paid for.

Get a Refund After the Charge Posts

Best Buy calls the first 60 days after an annual renewal the Purchase Grace Period. Cancel within that window and you’re entitled to a full refund of the renewal fee. Best Buy does reserve the right to deduct the value of any benefits you used during that period, including product discounts, services, and items purchased during members-only events.3Best Buy. My Best Buy Total Terms of Service

Cancel after day 60 and the refund is prorated based on the days remaining in your billing year, with the same deductions for used benefits. For My Best Buy Total, the portion of your fee allocated to protection plan coverage is calculated separately: you get a prorated refund of that portion, minus the cost of any repairs or replacements Best Buy covered during the term.3Best Buy. If you just got billed and haven’t redeemed a discount or used a service since the renewal, cancel now for the cleanest refund. Every perk you use before canceling reduces what you get back.

Dispute the Charge with Your Bank

If Best Buy won’t issue a satisfactory refund, or if the charge was genuinely unauthorized, escalate to your card issuer or bank. The process depends on the card type.

Credit Cards

The Fair Credit Billing Act gives you 60 days from the date the statement containing the charge was sent to dispute a billing error in writing.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1666 – Correction of Billing Errors While the investigation is open, you can withhold payment on the disputed amount without being reported as delinquent.5Federal Trade Commission. Using Credit Cards and Disputing Charges

Debit Cards and Bank Accounts

For debit card charges, the Electronic Fund Transfer Act and Regulation E apply. You have 60 days from the date the statement reflecting the charge was sent to notify your bank of the error.6Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. 12 CFR 1005.11 – Procedures for Resolving Errors The structure is similar, but the money has already left your account, so recovery depends on the bank’s investigation and any provisional credit it issues.

Be specific in your dispute. Note the date you first saw the charge, the amount, and what you did to try to resolve it. “I canceled this service on [date] and have confirmation number [X]” carries more weight than “I didn’t authorize this.”

Check That the Charge Is Real

Some people searching for a Best Buy renewal charge are actually reacting to a phishing email, not a real bank charge. Scam messages impersonating Geek Squad or Best Buy have been common. They typically claim your membership will renew for several hundred dollars and urge you to call a phone number or click a link to cancel.

Red flags include a sender address that isn’t @bestbuy.com, a renewal amount that doesn’t match real Best Buy pricing of $29.99 or $179.99, grammatical errors, and any callback number that isn’t 1-888-237-8289. Confirm by typing bestbuy.com into your browser and logging in. Your Plans and Subscriptions page shows every active membership and its real renewal date. If there’s nothing there, there’s no charge coming.

Federal Rules That Back You Up

Two federal rules shape how Best Buy has to handle auto-renewals. The Restore Online Shoppers Confidence Act requires any business using a negative option feature online to disclose all material terms before collecting billing information, obtain your express informed consent before the first charge, and provide a simple way to stop recurring billing.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 8403 – Negative Option Marketing on the Internet Skipping any of those steps is a federal violation, and the FTC can pursue civil penalties.

The FTC also finalized its click-to-cancel rule in October 2024. Sellers must provide a cancellation mechanism as easy as sign-up, one that immediately halts charges, and cannot force you into a phone call or a confusing process to cancel something you signed up for online.8Federal Trade Commission. Federal Trade Commission Announces Final Click-to-Cancel Rule If Best Buy or any other retailer makes cancellation harder than enrollment, that’s grounds for an FTC complaint.
