A biometrics appointment is a short, scheduled visit to a USCIS Application Support Center (ASC) where staff collect your fingerprints, a digital photograph, and an electronic signature so the agency can verify your identity and run criminal and national security background checks before your immigration application moves forward.1U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. USCIS Policy Manual – Purpose and Background The visit itself is quick. Missing it is the part that can quietly kill your case.
Your fingerprints go to the FBI for a full criminal background check, and USCIS runs additional inter-agency security screenings through the Department of Homeland Security.2U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. USCIS Policy Manual – Background and Security Checks The electronic signature you provide includes a statement that the information in your application is complete, true, and correct. This is not an interview. The technicians collecting your biometrics do not have access to your case file and cannot answer questions about it.
Biometrics appointments are triggered by a wide range of filings, including Form N-400 (naturalization), Form I-485 (adjustment of status), Form I-90 (green card replacement), Form N-600 (certificate of citizenship), Form I-589 (asylum), and adoption petitions on Forms I-600/I-600A and I-800A. Children under 14 are generally not scheduled, but once a child turns 14 USCIS requires them to appear, even if they were registered before that birthday. There is no upper age cutoff; improved scanning technology ended the older exemption for applicants 75 and up.2U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. What to Bring and How to Prepare
Your appointment notice arrives as Form I-797C (Notice of Action) and lists the date, time, and ASC location.3U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Preparing for Your Biometric Services Appointment Read it carefully. Bring two things:
- Your appointment notice. If you received more than one, bring all of them.
- Valid, unexpired photo identification, such as a passport, green card, or driver’s license.
USCIS accepts other identity documentation it authorizes, but a government-issued photo ID is the standard expectation.4U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Application Support Centers For the photograph, keep your face unobstructed. Hats and head coverings come off unless you wear them for religious reasons.
Whether you can carry a cell phone into the ASC depends on the individual facility’s rules. Photography and recording are prohibited at all USCIS offices except during naturalization ceremonies. Silence your phone in the waiting area and turn it off during the actual collection.5U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. USCIS Policy Manual – Conduct in USCIS Facilities
What Happens at the Appointment
You check in by presenting your appointment notice and photo ID. Staff verify your identity, may hand you an intake form, and direct you to a waiting area. A technician then digitally captures your fingerprints (typically all ten fingers), takes your photograph, and records your electronic signature.4U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. The collection itself takes a few minutes. Plan for the whole visit, including wait time, to run under an hour. Before you leave, make sure your appointment notice gets stamped. That stamp is your proof of attendance. Keep the notice with your other immigration records.
If You Can’t Make It or Miss It
If you fail to appear and USCIS has not received a rescheduling request or change of address by the time of the appointment, your application is considered abandoned and denied.6eCFR. Title 8 CFR 103.2 The denial carries a hidden cost: the priority date from an abandoned application cannot be carried over to a future filing.7U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. If you know ahead of time that you cannot attend, reschedule online through your myUSCIS account or by calling the USCIS Contact Center. The online tool will not work if the appointment has already been rescheduled twice, is within 12 hours, or has already passed.8U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. USCIS Launches Online Rescheduling of Biometrics Appointments
If you already missed the appointment, your only route is the USCIS Contact Center. USCIS does not accept late rescheduling requests by mail, in person, or through the online tool.8U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. USCIS Launches Online Rescheduling of Biometrics Appointments If your case is still pending, USCIS may use its discretion to decide whether to treat the application as abandoned, considering how much time passed, whether you had a sufficient reason for missing, and whether a denial would cause undue hardship.7U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. USCIS Policy Manual – Biometrics Collection
Asylum applicants are handled differently. If you miss a biometrics appointment tied to a Form I-589 without good cause, USCIS either dismisses the application (if you are in lawful status or paroled) or refers it to an immigration judge (if you are not).7U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Fees
USCIS used to charge a separate $85 biometrics services fee. Under the current fee structure, the biometrics cost is folded into the main filing fee for most applications, so most applicants no longer pay a separate biometrics charge. A reduced $30 biometrics fee still applies in limited situations, specifically for Temporary Protected Status filings and certain filings accepted on behalf of the Executive Office for Immigration Review.9U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Frequently Asked Questions on the USCIS Fee Rule
If you cannot afford the filing fee, you can request a fee waiver using Form I-912. A single fee waiver request covers both the filing fee and any applicable biometrics fee.10U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Instructions for Request for Fee Waiver
After Your Appointment
You will not get a decision or result at the ASC. Once your biometrics are collected, the data goes to USCIS and your application continues on its normal track, which may include a request for evidence, an interview notice, or a final decision. Processing times vary widely by benefit type and workload.
USCIS can reuse a biometrics photograph for up to 36 months from the date it was taken. If your last photo is older than that, expect a new appointment. Even inside that window, USCIS keeps the discretion to require fresh biometrics at any time, and some application types always require new biometrics regardless of when you last appeared, including Form N-400, Form I-485, Form I-90, and Form N-600.7U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
