The cost of a breath alcohol test runs from nothing to several hundred dollars a month, depending on who is asking for it and why. A roadside test during a traffic stop costs you nothing. A personal breathalyzer runs $10 to $150. Clinical and workplace tests generally fall between $25 and $95. Court-ordered devices like ignition interlocks and continuous alcohol monitors are the expensive end, sometimes topping $300 a month for as long as the program lasts.
Roadside and Police Station Tests
If an officer asks you to blow into a portable device at the roadside, or into the evidentiary machine back at the station after an arrest, you pay nothing directly. The department owns the equipment and covers the cost.
One boundary worth flagging, because it isn’t obvious from the price tag: every state has an implied consent law tied to your driver’s license, and refusing the test triggers its own penalties, usually an automatic suspension. In at least a dozen states, refusal is a separate criminal offense. The test is free. Saying no is not.
Personal Breathalyzers
Personal breathalyzers let you check your own blood alcohol before deciding whether to drive. Price tracks sensor technology more than anything else.
- Disposable single-use tests cost a few dollars each. Bulk packs of 20 to 30 run $30 to $40.
- Semiconductor-sensor handhelds cost roughly $10 to $50. They are the cheapest reusable option and the least accurate, because the sensor reacts to substances other than alcohol.
- Fuel-cell-sensor handhelds run $40 to $120. Fuel cell technology is what law enforcement devices use, and it is meaningfully more accurate for alcohol specifically.
- Smartphone-connected models cost $70 to $150. Most use fuel cell sensors and pair with an app that logs readings over time.
The FDA classifies personal breathalyzers as Class I exempt medical devices, so they reach the market without agency review of their accuracy claims.1U.S. Food and Drug Administration. DJZ – Product Classification A $15 device from an unknown brand can give you false confidence. If the reading matters, spend for a fuel cell model from a recognized manufacturer.
Calibration Costs Over Time
Owning a breathalyzer isn’t a one-time purchase. Sensors drift, and manufacturers generally recommend recalibration at least once a year or after a set number of uses, whichever comes first. Skip it and readings become unreliable.
There are two ways to handle calibration. Some models take a replaceable sensor module you swap in yourself; those pre-calibrated cartridges usually cost $20 to $40. Devices without swappable modules go back to a calibration service by mail, generally $35 to $55, with a surcharge on certain models. Budget for at least one calibration a year on top of what you paid for the unit.
Clinical and Medical Breath Tests
Breath alcohol tests ordered in a clinical setting are used for health assessments, pre-surgical screening, or as part of a treatment plan. An urgent care clinic might charge $50 to $75 for a standalone test. Occupational health clinics price them between $25 and $95, with the range reflecting facility and region.
Insurance coverage is inconsistent. Most insurers won’t pay for a routine alcohol screening unless it is medically necessary for a specific diagnosis or treatment. Medicare Part B does cover alcohol misuse screenings at no cost to the patient when the provider accepts Medicare’s standard payment terms.2Medicare.gov. Alcohol Misuse Screenings and Counseling Otherwise, plan to pay out of pocket.
Workplace Testing
Employers use breath tests for pre-employment screening, random programs, post-accident investigations, and reasonable-suspicion situations. The test typically costs $25 to $95 at an occupational health clinic or third-party facility, and in nearly all cases the employer pays.
Employees in safety-sensitive transportation roles, including commercial truck drivers, airline crew, pipeline workers, and transit operators, face federally mandated testing under Department of Transportation rules. A DOT-compliant test uses a two-step process: an initial screening, and if the result is 0.02 or higher, a confirmation test on an approved evidentiary device administered by a trained breath alcohol technician.3eCFR. 49 CFR Part 40 – Procedures for Transportation Workplace Drug and Alcohol Testing DOT tests sit toward the top of the price range because of the extra procedure, but the employer still covers it.
A few employers ask applicants to pay for their own pre-employment screen upfront. It is uncommon, and it may run afoul of state labor laws. If the employer requires the test, they are generally expected to pay.
Ignition Interlock Devices
An ignition interlock device (IID) is a breathalyzer wired into your car’s ignition. You blow before starting and periodically while driving, and if the reading is over the programmed limit, the car won’t start. Courts order these after DUI convictions, and 31 states plus the District of Columbia require them for first-time offenders.4National Conference of State Legislatures. State Ignition Interlock Laws Eight more require them for high-BAC or repeat offenders, and judges in every remaining state can order one at their discretion.
The costs stack up on several fronts:
- Installation: $50 to $170, depending on provider and vehicle.
- Monthly lease: $50 to $120. Some providers use a daily rate of $2 to $3.50 instead.
- Calibration: every 30 to 90 days, typically about $25 per visit. Some providers roll this into the monthly fee.
- Violation or lockout fees: $50 to $150 per incident if the device detects alcohol or suspected tampering.
- Removal: $50 to $150 when the program ends.
A 12-month interlock requirement at middling rates puts lease and calibration alone somewhere between $900 and $1,800, before installation, removal, or lockout fees. Multi-year programs can easily exceed $3,000 in device costs.
Continuous and Remote Alcohol Monitoring
Courts and family law judges sometimes order continuous monitoring instead of, or on top of, an interlock, particularly when the concern reaches beyond driving. Two systems dominate.
SCRAM Bracelets
A SCRAM bracelet is an ankle-worn device that samples perspiration every 30 minutes to detect alcohol around the clock. Common in DUI cases, domestic violence cases involving alcohol, and child custody disputes. Installation runs $50 to $100 as a one-time fee, and monitoring costs $10 to $15 a day, which works out to roughly $300 to $450 a month. The first month’s monitoring fee is usually due at installation.
Remote Cellular Breathalyzers
Devices like Soberlink work differently: you blow into a handheld cellular breathalyzer at scheduled times, and the device photographs your face for identity confirmation and transmits results to a monitoring party. These are increasingly common in family law cases where a parent’s sobriety is a condition of custody or visitation. The device itself costs $20 to $30 a month on a long-term rental or $550 to $750 to buy outright. Monitoring plans add $135 to $285 a month depending on testing frequency and reporting. A year of daily monitoring with a rented device can top $2,500.
If You Can’t Afford a Court-Ordered Device
Financial assistance exists in many states for people who genuinely cannot pay. At least 15 states have some form of interlock indigent program. Specifics vary widely. Some cover installation and removal entirely for qualifying individuals while charging a reduced monthly fee. Others use a sliding scale tied to federal poverty guidelines. A few leave the call entirely to the sentencing judge.
Eligibility usually turns on household income relative to the federal poverty level, enrollment in programs like SNAP or Medicaid, or a judicial finding of hardship. If you think you qualify, raise it with your attorney or the court before installation. These programs generally require advance approval, not retroactive reimbursement.
Probation supervision fees, which often accompany court-ordered monitoring at $30 to $60 a month in most states, are a separate charge and are harder to get waived. Over a multi-year probation, supervision fees alone can exceed $1,000.
