Cameroon Visa: Types, Documents, and E-Visa Application

Almost every foreign traveler needs a visa to enter Cameroon, and the Cameroon visa requirements are the same core set whether you apply online or through an embassy: a passport valid for at least six months, a yellow fever vaccination certificate, proof you can pay for your trip, a flight reservation, and, if someone in Cameroon is hosting you, an invitation letter that has been legalized by police there. Standard short-stay visas cost $181.82 and are processed in about 72 hours through the government’s e-Visa portal.

Who Needs a Visa

Nearly every non-Cameroonian citizen needs a visa, including naturalized U.S. citizens of Cameroonian origin.¹ The exception is citizens of the Central African Economic and Monetary Community (CEMAC): Chad, the Central African Republic, the Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, and Gabon. Those nationals enter without a visa under the bloc’s free-movement agreement.

Everyone else must have an approved e-Visa authorization or a consular visa sticker before boarding the plane. Cameroon does not issue visas on arrival, and airlines can refuse to board passengers without proof of approval.²

Which Visa Category Fits Your Trip

Cameroon splits visas into short-stay and long-stay. Choose by both purpose and length; the wrong category delays or kills the application.

Short-Stay (Up to Six Months)

The short-stay visa covers tourists, private visitors, business travelers, event participants, pensioners, and healthcare evacuees, and is valid for up to six months.² There is no separate long-stay tourist visa. Business travelers must add a company letter guaranteeing financial and legal responsibility for the trip and a business contract with a Cameroonian partner countersigned by immigration or police.

Transit

A transit visa allows a stay of up to four days for travelers passing through to another country. A separate transit category exists for longer stopovers and requires additional justification.²

Long-Stay (Up to One Year)

Long-stay visas cover contract workers, independent workers, long-term trainees, students, family members joining a foreign national already in Cameroon, and refugees.² Students need proof of enrollment from a Cameroonian institution. Workers need an employment contract approved by the relevant government ministry.

Volunteers and Researchers

Volunteers fall under short-stay or long-stay depending on assignment length and must submit a confirmation letter from the host organization legalized by police in Cameroon.² Researchers need a separate research permit from the Ministry of Scientific Research and Innovation, plus additional permits from other ministries depending on the field. Those approvals run on their own timeline and should be started months ahead of the visa itself.

Documents You Need to Assemble

The core package is the same for online and consular applications. A missing item is the most common reason files stall.

Passport and Photos

Your passport must have at least six months of validity remaining beyond your planned travel date for short-stay visas, and more than six months for long-stay visas.³ Leave at least one blank page for the sticker. Consular applications need two identical 2-by-2-inch color photos on a white background.¹ E-Visa applications take a digital scan.

Yellow Fever Certificate

An International Certificate of Vaccination showing yellow fever immunization is mandatory to enter Cameroon.³ If a medical condition prevents vaccination, a signed and stamped exemption letter from a physician can substitute.² Children under one year old are exempt. The vaccine itself typically runs $170 to $350 at U.S. travel clinics and is often not covered by insurance.

Financial Proof

You need to show you can pay for your stay. The required document depends on who is funding the trip:²

Self-funded: a bank statement no more than three months old.
Third-party sponsor outside Cameroon: a notarized letter of support plus the sponsor’s recent bank statement.
Company or organization paying: a signed letter of financial responsibility on company letterhead.
Sponsor based in Cameroon: an invitation letter legalized by police in Cameroon.

There is no published minimum balance. The statement should show enough to cover accommodation, transport, and daily expenses for the whole stay.

The Legalization Trap on Invitation Letters

This catches more applicants off guard than anything else. If someone in Cameroon is inviting you, the invitation letter is not valid until it has been legalized by the territorially competent immigration or police authorities in Cameroon.² The same rule applies to certificates of accommodation from a host, business introduction letters from Cameroonian partners, and volunteer program acceptance letters. Your contact in Cameroon has to take the letter to a local police or immigration office, get it stamped and signed, and send you the legalized copy.

Tourist applicants using a tour operator need the operator’s letter legalized as well. If you’re booking hotels yourself, a hotel reservation is enough for accommodation proof and does not need legalization.

Flight Reservation

Include a copy of a round-trip flight reservation. A confirmed reservation is enough at the application stage; you don’t need a fully purchased ticket.

Extra Documents for Minors

Applicants under 18 face extra paperwork that takes time to prepare.¹ Beyond the standard passport, photos, and flight reservation, you need:

A copy of the child’s birth certificate.
A notarized parental consent letter jointly signed by both parents or legal guardians, naming who will accompany the minor. If the father’s name is not on the birth certificate, the mother alone may sign.
If one parent is in Cameroon, a parental authorization from that parent legalized by police there, plus copies of their Cameroonian passport or national ID.
If a parent is in a third country, the consent letter must be legalized at the nearest Cameroonian embassy or consulate.
Financial proof from a parent, sponsor, or legal guardian, or a police-legalized invitation letter from the host in Cameroon (for children not of Cameroonian origin).
Copies of each parent’s valid ID and proof of U.S. residency status.

Children one and older still need the yellow fever certificate. Infants under one are exempt.

Applying Through the E-Visa Portal

The e-Visa is the usual route and runs through the official portal at evisacam.cm. Create an account, complete the pre-registration form with your travel dates and host or hotel contact, then upload scans of your passport biodata page, yellow fever certificate, flight reservation, financial proof, and any legalized invitation or accommodation documents.

Pay the processing fee online by credit card or mobile payment. The application does not enter the review queue until payment clears. The system routes your file to the diplomatic mission responsible for your geographic area.

Under normal processing, the decision arrives within 72 hours of payment. Express processing cuts that to 24 hours for an extra fee.⁴ Submit at least ten days before travel to leave room for complications. On approval, you receive an email with a visa authorization document carrying a QR code. Print it. You cannot board without it.

The e-Visa authorization gets you on the plane, but the process finishes at the port of entry, where immigration officers capture your photograph and fingerprints and affix the physical visa sticker into your passport.² Minors also have to appear in person for this step. Keep the printed QR authorization, passport, and yellow fever card easy to reach at the immigration counter.

Applying Through an Embassy

If you’d rather arrive with the sticker already in your passport, apply through an embassy or consulate. The Embassy of Cameroon in Washington, D.C., covers the entire United States, Mexico, Costa Rica, and the Bahamas.¹

One restriction to check first: non-U.S. citizens in the United States on a B1 or B2 visitor visa cannot apply at the D.C. embassy. U.S. permanent residents and holders of work or student visas such as H-1B, F-1, and J-1 can apply normally.

Contact the embassy for the current submission procedure, which may involve an appointment or mailing the package. The package includes your original passport, application forms, two passport photos, and the full supporting document set. Many missions require a prepaid return envelope with tracking so they can mail the passport back with the visa sticker inside. Not all missions accept credit cards, so consular staff may ask for a money order or cashier’s check.

Fees and Processing Times

Visa fees are set by Cameroonian law and apply whether you use e-Visa or a consulate. The current schedule, in effect since the 2023 Finance Law and confirmed in the January 2026 fee table:⁵

Short-stay regular (up to 6 months): $181.82, processed in 3 business days.
Short-stay express (up to 6 months): $272.73, processed in 24 hours.
Long-stay regular (up to 1 year): $272.73, processed in 3 business days.

The long-stay express option, previously listed at $363.64, has been suppressed as of the January 2026 fee schedule and is no longer available.² If you need a long-stay visa quickly, plan around the three-business-day timeline.

The number of entries granted (single or multiple) is set by the embassy based on your itinerary and can affect the final amount. Beyond the visa fee, budget for the yellow fever vaccination ($170 to $350), any notarization fees for consent or support letters, and mailing costs for postal applications.

Extending Your Stay

If plans change while you’re in Cameroon, short-stay holders can request an extension from three months up to the six-month maximum without leaving the country.⁶ Extensions are handled by the General Delegation for National Security (Emi-Immigration), not by the issuing embassy. Submit the application to the competent local office before the current visa expires.

Do not overstay, even by a day. Cameroon treats overstays seriously, with consequences that can include fines, detention, and classification as an undesirable person in the immigration system. An overstay record can also complicate future applications for Cameroon and other countries. Start the extension process early if your departure date looks like it might slip.
