In most cases, a convicted felon can drive for Lyft, but the answer turns on two things: what the felony was, and how long ago it happened. Lyft permanently bars applicants with certain serious convictions, including violent crimes, sexual offenses, terrorism-related offenses, and anyone on the National Sex Offender Registry. Everything else falls under a seven-year lookback, so a felony older than seven years that isn’t on the permanent-bar list generally will not block approval.1Lyft Help. Driver Requirements
Felonies That Permanently Disqualify You
Some convictions shut the door regardless of how much time has passed. Anyone listed on the National Sex Offender Registry is automatically ineligible. Lyft also treats the following categories as disqualifying without a time limitation: violent crimes such as homicide, kidnapping, human trafficking, arson, robbery, and aggravated assault; sexual offenses such as rape and sexual assault; and acts of terror.1Lyft Help. Driver Requirements
The examples Lyft gives aren’t exhaustive. A conviction described as a “disqualifying violent crime” can include offenses beyond the ones named, and Lyft keeps discretion over borderline cases. If your felony involved violence against another person, the screening will treat it seriously no matter when it happened.
The Seven-Year Lookback for Other Felonies
Felonies outside the permanent-bar categories are evaluated against a seven-year window. If the conviction is older than seven years, it generally won’t stop your application. Offenses that fall under this lookback include:
- Fraud-related offenses such as forgery and identity theft
- Drug-related offenses, including possession, distribution, and manufacturing
- Theft or property damage, including burglary, larceny, and vandalism
- DUI or drug-related driving violations, including felony DUI
- Other serious driving-related felonies, such as hit-and-run
Lyft notes these timeframes “may vary based on the law in your region,” meaning some states cap how far back a background check can report, which can work in your favor.1Lyft Help. Driver Requirements In states with strict seven-year reporting limits, the screening company may not be permitted to report older convictions at all.
The math gets personal here. A drug possession felony from eight years ago probably won’t appear in your screening results. The same conviction from five years ago almost certainly will, and it will disqualify you until it ages out.
What the Background Check Actually Looks At
Lyft uses Checkr, a third-party screening company, to run both the criminal and driving record checks.2Checkr. Lyft When you apply, you authorize Checkr to search national criminal databases, sex offender registries, and motor vehicle records. Turnaround runs from a few days to several weeks, depending on how quickly county courthouses respond. There isn’t much you can do to speed up the court side, but making sure your name, address, and license details are accurate on the application avoids extra delay from mismatches.
Your driving record is screened separately from your criminal history, and the standards there are strict in their own right. A DUI or drug-related driving violation within the past seven years is disqualifying, and so is a serious driving-related conviction like a hit-and-run.1Lyft Help. Driver Requirements A felony conviction on your record and a clean driving history still have to come together before Lyft approves you.
Your Rights if Lyft Denies You
Federal law gives you specific protections if your background check is the reason for a denial. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, before taking “adverse action” based on a consumer report, Lyft must send you a copy of the report and a written description of your rights.3Office of the Law Revision Counsel. United States Code Title 15 – Section 1681b This pre-adverse action notice exists to give you a chance to review the report and respond before the decision is final.
After a waiting period, if Lyft still intends to deny you, it has to send a final adverse action notice. That notice must include the name and contact information of the screening company, a statement that the screening company didn’t make the denial decision, and a reminder that you can request a free copy of your report and dispute any inaccuracies.3Office of the Law Revision Counsel. United States Code Title 15 – Section 1681b These protections apply to gig platform screening the same way they apply to traditional employment.
Read the report carefully when it arrives. Background check errors are more common than people expect, especially with common names, outdated database entries, or offenses from other states.
Challenging a Disqualification
Disputing Inaccurate Information
If the background check contains errors, your dispute goes to Checkr, not Lyft. Checkr is legally required to conduct a reasonable investigation when you challenge the accuracy of information in your report and must give you the results in writing.4Federal Trade Commission. What Employment Background Screening Companies Need to Know About the Fair Credit Reporting Act Attach any supporting documentation you can, such as court records showing a case was dismissed or that the conviction belongs to someone else.
When the Record Is Accurate but There Are Mitigating Factors
If your record is correct, Lyft will still accept additional documentation for review. You can submit materials such as a Certificate of Rehabilitation, a Certificate of Relief from Disabilities, or court-approved expungement documents to Lyft’s support team.1Lyft Help. Driver Requirements There’s no guarantee it changes the outcome, but it opens a path beyond automatic denial.
Expungement
Getting a conviction expunged or sealed is the most reliable way to remove it from future background checks. Expunged records should not appear in screening reports, and Checkr’s policy acknowledges that sealed or expunged records may no longer be reportable. If you qualify for expungement in your state, pursuing it before applying to Lyft saves you the trouble of disputing a report later. Eligibility, cost, and process vary widely by state, so check with your local court or a legal aid organization.
One caveat worth knowing: database errors sometimes cause expunged records to surface anyway. If that happens, the paperwork from your expungement gives you strong grounds for a successful dispute with Checkr.
If Lyft Won’t Approve You
Other gig platforms use similar but not identical screening standards. Uber’s background check also treats murder, sexual assault, and terrorism-related convictions as permanent disqualifiers, while other offenses are evaluated with some consideration of local regulations and evidence of rehabilitation.5Uber Help. What Background Checks Look For
Delivery platforms like DoorDash and Instacart also use Checkr and generally apply a seven-year lookback. Non-violent felonies within that window are often reviewed case by case rather than denied outright. Because delivery work doesn’t involve transporting passengers, these platforms tend to allow more flexibility with criminal records than rideshare companies do. If your felony disqualifies you from carrying passengers right now, a delivery-only platform may be a workable alternative while you wait for the conviction to age past the lookback window or pursue expungement.
