Yes, you can use a rental car for Uber, but only if you rent through one of Uber’s approved partners inside the Driver app. A standard rental from a retail counter is not allowed. Uber works with specific rental companies that set up vehicles for commercial rideshare use and bundle insurance, maintenance, and platform registration into a single weekly payment starting around $240. It’s a workable path if you don’t own a qualifying car, but the weekly minimums and fees deserve a careful look before you sign.
Which Rental Companies Uber Works With
Uber currently partners with Hertz, Avis, and Kinto through the Vehicle Marketplace inside the Driver app. Each one operates a little differently.
Hertz has the broadest U.S. availability, with weekly rates starting at $240 plus taxes and fees and a $200 refundable security deposit.1Hertz. Uber Rentals Avis lists eligible cars starting at $260 per week plus taxes and fees, with the weekly payment covering the base rate along with liability insurance and basic maintenance.2Uber. Avis Car Rental Partnership Kinto focuses on electric and hybrid vehicles and operates in more limited markets, including the Los Angeles area, with models approved for UberX, Comfort, and other categories.3Kinto. The booking has to happen through the Uber Driver app’s Vehicle Marketplace. Walking into a Hertz or Avis counter and renting a car the normal way does not count, even though it’s the same company on the sign.
Why a Standard Rental Car Won’t Work
Retail rental agreements almost universally ban commercial use of the vehicle. That includes rideshare driving, food delivery, and any activity where you’re earning money by transporting people or goods. If you violate the agreement, the collision damage waiver and other protections built into the contract get voided, leaving you personally on the hook for repairs, loss-of-use fees, and administrative charges. The rental company can also demand the car back immediately.
Uber tracks which vehicles are authorized on the platform. A standard retail rental won’t match any approved rental agreement in the system, and driving on a non-sanctioned vehicle puts your account at risk of deactivation. Between the insurance gap and the platform risk, using a regular rental is a financial trap not worth the perceived savings.
What It Actually Costs Each Week
The weekly rate sounds manageable on its own, but there’s a mandatory trip minimum attached. Hertz requires 30 completed trips during each rental week. If you fall short, you won’t get an extension and have to return the vehicle on the seventh day of your current rental period.1Hertz. Uber Rentals That minimum resets every week.
Do the math before you commit. At $240 to $260 per week before taxes and fees, you’re spending roughly $1,000 to $1,100 a month on the car. Add fuel and realistic monthly vehicle costs run closer to $1,400. You have to clear that number before earning a dollar of actual income. Part-time and weekend drivers usually can’t make the model work. Rentals reward high-volume drivers who can comfortably hit 30-plus trips a week.
Insurance That Comes With the Rental
A genuine advantage of the approved rental programs is that insurance is packaged into the weekly rate. You don’t need to carry separate rideshare insurance or worry about gaps in a personal auto policy. The rental agreement typically includes a loss damage waiver that limits your exposure if the vehicle itself is damaged, though comprehensive and collision coverage on vehicles rented through the Vehicle Marketplace may carry a deductible of up to $1,000.4Uber. Insurance for Rideshare and Delivery Drivers
Uber’s own liability coverage layers on top depending on your status when an accident happens. While you’re online waiting for a request, Uber maintains $50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident for injuries, plus $25,000 in property damage. Once you’re en route to a pickup or on a trip, at least $1,000,000 in property damage and injury coverage applies.4Uber. Insurance for Rideshare and Delivery Drivers
Who Qualifies and What You Need to Book
Your Uber driver account has to be fully activated with a completed background check before you can reserve a vehicle. Beyond that, each rental partner sets its own eligibility rules:
- Age: Hertz requires drivers to be at least 21 (25 for Tesla rentals). Avis sets its minimum at 25.1Hertz. Uber Rentals5Avis. Avis Uber
- License: A valid U.S. driver’s license in good standing.
- Payment: A credit or debit card to cover the first week’s rental and the deposit. Hertz’s deposit is $200.1Hertz. Uber Rentals
One thing drivers learn the hard way: using a debit card can trigger a credit check at the counter during pickup. Some drivers have been denied the vehicle despite having enough money in the account. A credit card avoids that issue.
Picking Up the Car and Getting on the Road
You start in the Uber Driver app by opening the Vehicle Marketplace, selecting a rental partner, and choosing an available vehicle. After confirming the reservation, you schedule a branch visit. At the counter, do a careful walk-around before signing anything. Photograph every scratch, scuff, and ding. That protects you from being charged for pre-existing damage when you return the car.
Once you sign and the deposit is processed, the vehicle automatically appears in your driver app as your active car. You can start accepting trips right away without uploading registration or insurance documents; the rental partner handles the digital handshake with Uber directly.6Uber. Hertz Car Rental Partnership
Returning late costs money. Hertz doesn’t charge for returns under 29 minutes past the scheduled time, but 30 minutes or more triggers additional charges, and returns more than 90 minutes late are typically billed as a full extra day. Charges keep accruing until the vehicle is back at a Hertz location, including overnight if the branch is closed.7Hertz. Early or Late
The 28-Day Maintenance Return
Basic maintenance is included in the weekly rate. You don’t pay for oil changes, tire rotations, or routine service. Every 28 days, though, Hertz requires you to bring the vehicle back to the branch for a maintenance inspection. At that appointment, Hertz inspects the car, performs any needed service, and you can keep the same vehicle or swap for a different model.6Uber. Hertz Car Rental Partnership
That 28-day return also opens a new rental contract, so each period is a fresh commitment. Between mandatory returns, you may be eligible to extend up to three times in seven-day increments. In some markets like Chicago and Seattle, Hertz auto-renews the rental unless you physically return the car.6Uber. Hertz Car Rental Partnership
Keep the car clean and don’t smoke in it. Cleaning and smoking fees come out of your pocket, not Uber’s, and they can wipe out a week’s earnings.
Deducting the Rental on Your Taxes
Uber rental payments are a deductible business expense. As a self-employed driver, you report rideshare income on Schedule C and deduct vehicle-related costs against it. The IRS gives you two options: the standard mileage rate or the actual expense method.
For 2026, the standard mileage rate is 72.5 cents per mile driven for business purposes.8Internal Revenue Service. IRS Sets 2026 Business Standard Mileage Rate at 72.5 Cents per Mile, Up 2.5 Cents The IRS treats these rental programs similarly to leases, and if you choose the standard mileage rate for a leased vehicle, you have to use that method for the entire lease period including renewals.9Internal Revenue Service. Publication 463 (2025), Travel, Gift, and Car Expenses The actual expense method instead lets you deduct the business-use portion of your weekly rental payments, fuel, tolls, and other driving costs.
Which method saves more depends on your mileage and total costs. High miles with a lower rental payment often favor the mileage rate. High weekly rental, fuel, and incidental costs relative to mileage can make actual expenses the larger deduction. Run both calculations before filing, because you can’t switch methods mid-lease. Track every mile and keep every receipt from day one; reconstructing records at tax time leaves money on the table.
