Yes, you can tax your car in advance of the current Vehicle Excise Duty expiring, but only inside a set window. Online or at a Post Office, renewal opens on the 5th of the month your current tax runs out. If you’ll be away from home during that window, you can apply by post up to two months early instead. Either way, the new tax period starts on the 1st of the month after your current one ends, so you don’t pay twice or lose any of the time you’ve already covered.1GOV.UK. The Standard Early Renewal Window
For most drivers, taxing in advance simply means renewing at some point during the month the current tax expires, rather than leaving it to the final day. The window opens on the 5th of that month. So if your tax runs out on 31 March, you can renew any time from 5 March onwards, and the new period still begins on 1 April.1GOV.UK. Apply for Vehicle Tax in Advance
Try before the 5th and the system won’t process it. The 16-digit reference number on your V11 reminder letter activates on the 5th and stays valid until the end of the following month. Paying on the 5th costs the same as paying on the 31st, so there’s no penalty for getting it out of the way early.
Applying Up to Two Months Early by Post
If you’ll be abroad or otherwise unable to renew during the standard window, the DVLA lets you apply up to two months before your current tax expires. This route exists specifically for people whose travel overlaps their renewal date, and it can’t be done online.1GOV.UK. Apply for Vehicle Tax in Advance
Post the following to the DVLA in Swansea:
- A completed V10 form, which is the standard application for vehicle tax. It’s available from Post Offices or as a PDF online.2GOV.UK. Apply for Vehicle Tax (Form V10)
- A short letter explaining that you’ll be away when your tax is due.
- Your original V5C logbook.
- Payment by cheque, postal order, or banker’s draft made out to “DVLA Swansea.”
Once processed, the new tax period starts immediately after the current one ends, so there’s no gap in cover. Your V5C comes back by post when the DVLA is finished with it. Allow several weeks, and don’t leave the application until the last minute before you travel.
What You Need Before You Can Renew
Before the DVLA will let you tax the vehicle, two things have to be in place: valid insurance, and a current MOT certificate if the car is more than three years old. The renewal service checks both databases automatically. If either is missing or expired, the application is blocked, and there’s no override. Sort out any gap before you try to renew.
You’ll also need a reference number. One of these will do:
- The 16-digit reference on your V11 reminder letter. This is the easiest route if the letter has arrived.
- The 11-digit reference on the front page of your V5C registration certificate.3GOV.UK. Tax Your Vehicle Without a Vehicle Tax Reminder
Lost your V5C? You can apply for a replacement and tax the vehicle at the same time through the DVLA’s online service. A replacement V5C costs £25.3GOV.UK. Tax Your Vehicle Without a Vehicle Tax Reminder

Buying a Car Is a Different Situation
Vehicle tax doesn’t transfer with the car. When ownership changes, any tax the previous keeper had is cancelled and refunded to them for whole months remaining. As the new keeper, you have to tax the car yourself before driving it on public roads.4GOV.UK. Tax Your Vehicle
The seller normally hands you the green “new keeper” slip (V5C/2) torn from the logbook. Use the reference on that slip to tax the car online or at a Post Office right away.4GOV.UK. Tax Your Vehicle The full V5C in your name arrives by post within a few weeks. This is one case where you can’t wait for a renewal window; the car has to be taxed before your first journey.
If You Won’t Be Using the Car
Advance tax isn’t your only option. If the car is going to sit unused for a while, you can declare it off the road with a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) instead of renewing. Every vehicle in the UK has to be either taxed or SORNed at all times, so simply letting the tax lapse is itself an offence.
A SORN is free. You can declare one online using your V5C or V11 reference, by phone on 0300 123 4321, or by posting a V890 form. Applied during the month your tax expires, it takes effect on the 1st of the next month.8GOV.UK. Register Your Vehicle as Off the Road (SORN) While the car is SORNed, you can’t drive it on public roads except to a pre-booked MOT.
Set a reminder for the 5th of your renewal month and the whole process, whether you tax the car or declare a SORN, takes only a few minutes.
