Can US Citizens Work in the UK? Visas, Taxes, and Family

Yes, US citizens can work in the UK, but only with a UK work visa arranged before the job starts. There is no visa-free work arrangement between the two countries, so even a short-term role requires the right immigration permission in advance.1U.S. Embassy and Consulates in the United Kingdom. Legal Right to Work in the UK Americans do get one built-in advantage: on most work visas, you are exempt from the English language test that applicants from non-English-speaking countries have to pass.2GOV.UK. The route you use depends on whether you have a UK job offer, your age, and the kind of work you do.

The Skilled Worker Visa Is the Main Route

Most Americans working in the UK are on a Skilled Worker visa. You need a confirmed offer from a UK employer that holds a Home Office sponsor licence. The employer assigns you a Certificate of Sponsorship, an electronic record containing your job details, salary, and start date, and you use its reference number when you apply.3GOV.UK. The job has to appear on the list of eligible occupations and meet a minimum salary. The standard threshold is £41,700 per year or the “going rate” for your specific occupation, whichever is higher.4GOV.UK. You also have to show you can support yourself: at least £1,270 in your bank account for 28 consecutive days, with day 28 within 31 days of applying. Your employer can waive this by certifying on the Certificate of Sponsorship that they will cover your first month.6GOV.UK. Skilled Worker Visa – How Much It Costs

Youth Mobility Scheme for Younger Applicants

If you are young enough to qualify, the Youth Mobility Scheme lets you live and work in the UK for up to two years without a job offer or employer sponsorship.7GOV.UK. Youth Mobility Scheme Visa The age band varies by nationality (somewhere between 18–30 and 18–35), so check the current eligibility for US citizens on GOV.UK before you apply. You can work in almost any job during your stay.

You need £2,530 in savings when you apply, and the healthcare surcharge is lower than on other work visas at £776 per year, or £1,552 across the full two years.8GOV.UK. Pay for UK Healthcare as Part of Your Immigration Application – How Much Pay One catch: this visa cannot be extended, and you cannot switch from it to a Skilled Worker visa from inside the UK. If you want to stay longer, plan the next step early.

Other Routes If Skilled Worker Doesn’t Fit

Not every American working in the UK arrives through standard sponsorship. Three alternatives cover most other situations.

The Global Talent visa is for leaders or emerging leaders in academia, arts and culture, or digital technology. You need an endorsement from an approved body, unless you have won a prestigious prize listed by the Home Office. No job offer or sponsor is required, and there is no cap.9GOV.UK. The Scale-Up visa covers workers hired by a fast-growing UK business that holds a Scale-Up sponsor licence. The minimum salary is £39,100 or the going rate, whichever is higher. After six months of sponsored employment, you can work anywhere in the UK for the rest of your visa.10GOV.UK. Scale-Up Worker Visa – Your Job

The Senior or Specialist Worker visa (part of Global Business Mobility) is for employees of multinational companies transferring to a UK branch. You must already work for the organization, and the minimum salary is £52,500. Your maximum stay depends on pay: up to five years in any six-year period if you earn under £73,900, or up to nine years in any ten-year period at £73,900 or above.11GOV.UK. How the Application Works

Every UK work visa application starts online at GOV.UK. You submit personal details, passport information, and employment specifics including the Certificate of Sponsorship reference number. You can apply up to three months before your job start date.12GOV.UK. How to Apply for a Visa to Come to the UK – Prepare Your Application

After the online form, you book an appointment at a visa application centre to give biometrics (fingerprints and a photo). If your country has no centre, you can use one in a nearby country.13GOV.UK. Find a Visa Application Centre Supporting documents can be uploaded online or brought to the appointment. Standard processing for a Skilled Worker visa from outside the UK takes about three weeks.14GOV.UK. Visa Processing Times – Applications Outside the UK

For a Skilled Worker application you will need a valid passport, your Certificate of Sponsorship reference number, bank statements showing the £1,270 held for 28 consecutive days (unless your employer certifies maintenance), and possibly a criminal record certificate depending on the role.15GOV.UK. Financial Evidence for Sponsored or Endorsed Work Routes US citizens applying from the US generally do not need a tuberculosis test. That requirement applies only to people who have lived for six or more months in specific countries on the Home Office list, and the United States is not one of them.16GOV.UK. What It Costs

Fees add up quickly. For a Skilled Worker visa applied from outside the UK, the application fee is £769 for a visa of up to three years, or £1,519 for more than three years. Immigration Salary List roles pay a discounted £590 or £1,160.6GOV.UK. Each dependant pays their own application fee and IHS.

After Your Visa Is Approved

The UK has moved to a digital immigration system. For work and study visa applications made on or after July 15, 2025, main applicants no longer get a physical visa sticker in their passport. You receive an eVisa, a digital record of your status accessed through a UKVI account. Dependants moved to eVisas on October 30, 2025.17GOV.UK. Updates on the Move to eVisas Set up your UKVI account and confirm your permission before you travel.

Biometric Residence Permits are no longer issued to new applicants. Older guides that told you to collect a BRP within 10 days of arrival are out of date. Your eVisa is your proof of identity, immigration status, and right to work.

Once you arrive, apply online for a National Insurance number. You need one to work and pay taxes, and your employer will ask for it, though you can start working before it arrives as long as you can prove your right to work through your eVisa.18GOV.UK. Apply for a National Insurance Number

Bringing Your Family

If you hold a Skilled Worker visa, your partner and children under 18 can apply to join you as dependants, and their visas will end when yours does. An unmarried partner qualifies if you have lived together for at least two years.19GOV.UK. Skilled Worker Visa – Your Partner and Children

Each dependant needs separate financial evidence unless your employer certifies maintenance for the whole family on the Certificate of Sponsorship, and each pays their own application fee and IHS. Total government fees for a family of four on a five-year visa can easily reach £20,000.

Tax Obligations Americans Should Not Overlook

This is the piece most Americans miss. The United States taxes its citizens on worldwide income regardless of where they live, so working in the UK means you owe tax to both countries on the same earnings. You do not get to pick one.

In practice, the US-UK tax treaty and IRS provisions keep most people from being taxed twice on the same dollar. The main tool is the Foreign Tax Credit, which offsets UK income tax you have already paid against your US tax liability. You claim it on Form 1116 with your US return.20Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1116 (2025) Because UK tax rates are generally higher than US rates at most income levels, the credit often wipes out your US tax on UK earnings, though you still have to file.

You can also use the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion, which for the 2026 tax year lets you exclude up to $132,900 of foreign earned income, with an additional housing exclusion capped at $39,870.21Internal Revenue Service. Figuring the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion You cannot use the exclusion and the credit on the same income, so the right choice depends on your salary and situation.

If your foreign financial accounts exceed $10,000 in aggregate value at any point during the year, you also have to file a Report of Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts (FBAR) with FinCEN.22Internal Revenue Service. Report of Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts (FBAR) Penalties for missing this filing can be steep, and it catches many expats off guard.

Staying Long-Term

After five years living and working in the UK on a Skilled Worker visa, you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain, the UK equivalent of a green card.23GOV.UK. Check if You Can Get Indefinite Leave to Remain ILR removes work restrictions and lets you stay permanently without a sponsor.

To qualify, you generally need to meet the same salary threshold that applied to your Skilled Worker visa at the time of the ILR application: £41,700 or the going rate, whichever is higher, with reduced thresholds for healthcare, education, and Immigration Salary List roles.24GOV.UK. Indefinite Leave to Remain if You Have a Skilled Worker Visa – Salary Requirements You also need to pass the Life in the UK test and show English at CEFR level B1 or above, though US citizens are typically exempt from the language test for the same reason they were exempt on the initial visa.25GOV.UK. Prove Your Knowledge of English for Citizenship and Settling

The five-year clock starts from the date your first qualifying visa began, and absences from the UK during that time cannot exceed 180 days in any 12-month stretch. Extended trips home to visit family have broken continuous residency for people who did not track their days, forcing them to restart the count.
