Can You Cancel Planet Fitness Membership by Phone?

You usually cannot cancel a Planet Fitness membership by phone as a matter of standard policy. Most locations require you to cancel in person at your home club or by certified mail. But exceptions exist for members who have moved far from any club, servicemembers under deployment orders, and members with medical documentation, and some club managers will process a phone request when the standard methods are impractical. Knowing where the discretion lives, and what federal and state rules back you up, is what makes the call work.

Why Phone Isn’t the Default

Planet Fitness operates almost entirely through franchisees, and each franchise sets its own administrative procedures within the corporate framework. Call the corporate support line and you’ll be directed back to your home club, because corporate lacks the system access to modify franchise billing accounts. The home club then typically enforces the written cancellation requirement.

This isn’t unique to Planet Fitness. The FTC brought a complaint against the operators of LA Fitness in August 2025 alleging that staff were trained to reject cancellation requests made by phone or email even though members could sign up online.1Federal Trade Commission. Cancelling a Gym (or Other) Membership Shouldn’t Be a Heavy Lift Policies also vary club to club. One location might accept a phone request with follow-up documentation by email; another might insist on certified mail only. The first move is to call your home club and simply ask whether they’ll process a cancellation by phone.

When a Phone Cancellation Actually Works

You’ve Moved More Than 25 Miles Away

If you’ve relocated more than 25 miles from any Planet Fitness location, many clubs will waive the in-person requirement. You’ll need to send proof of your new address, such as a utility bill or lease, by email or fax during or after the call. This is the most common scenario where a phone cancellation goes through cleanly, because the whole reason for the in-person policy disappears when you physically can’t visit.

Military Deployment

Federal law gives servicemembers the right to cancel gym memberships after receiving orders to relocate for 90 days or more to a location that doesn’t support the contract. The provider cannot charge an early termination fee and must refund any prepaid amounts covering the period after termination within 60 days.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 50 USC 3956 – Termination of Certain Consumer Contracts Gym memberships were added to the list of covered contracts in January 2023.3Air Force Materiel Command. Servicemember Civil Relief Act Amended You’ll need a copy of your orders. Most clubs will accept these by email or fax rather than in person, since deployment timelines rarely accommodate a gym visit.

A Medical Reason You Can Document

A letter from a licensed physician stating that you can no longer use gym facilities due to a permanent or long-term medical condition is usually enough to trigger a remote cancellation. Clubs handle these case by case, and the manager generally has discretion to waive the in-person requirement when the medical documentation makes an in-person visit unreasonable.

Your State May Already Require It

A growing number of states have enacted automatic-renewal or easy-cancellation laws that require businesses to accept cancellation through the same method used to sign up, or through equally convenient channels. At least nine states and the District of Columbia have specific provisions targeting gym or subscription cancellation practices. If you signed up online and your state has such a law, the club may be legally required to accept a non-in-person cancellation regardless of what their standard policy says. Mention this on the call if the representative pushes back.

What to Have Ready Before You Dial

A successful phone cancellation depends on removing every reason the representative might have to tell you to call back. Pull these together first:

  • Your Member ID, found on the barcode in the Planet Fitness app or on your physical key tag.
  • The direct phone number for your home club, which you can look up on the Planet Fitness website using the club finder. Don’t call corporate expecting them to cancel for you.
  • Supporting documentation ready to email or fax during the call: proof of relocation (lease, utility bill), military orders, or a physician’s letter, depending on your situation.
  • Your contract details, including enrollment date, membership type (Classic or PF Black Card), and whether you’re in a commitment period. All of this sits in the app under your account settings.

When you reach a staff member, state upfront that you’re calling to cancel and give your Member ID right away. Don’t let the conversation drift into a retention pitch before you’ve established what you’re calling about. Ask for a confirmation number and an email receipt before you hang up. If the representative says they can’t process a phone cancellation, ask to speak with the club manager. Managers have more system access and discretion than front-desk staff.

If the Call Doesn’t Work

Two standard methods are available if the phone route is refused.

In person at your home club. Go to the specific location where you originally signed up. Bring a photo ID. Fill out the cancellation form on-site and ask for a printed confirmation showing the staff member’s name, the date, and a confirmation number. Take a photo of the form before handing it over. This gives you the most immediate confirmation, but it only works during staffed hours when a manager with billing access is present.

Certified mail. Address a cancellation letter to your home club. Include your full name, membership ID number, address, phone number, and a clear statement that you are canceling. Send it certified with return receipt requested. The return receipt is your proof the club received the letter and the date they received it. That date matters, because the cancellation deadline is tied to when the club gets the notice, not when you mailed it.

Time It So You Aren’t Charged Again

Timing a cancellation poorly can cost you an extra month of dues or trigger the annual enhancement fee. Planet Fitness generally requires cancellation requests to be received at least seven days before your next billing date to avoid being charged for the following month. For members billed on the 17th, that puts the effective deadline around the 10th. Your billing date is in your membership agreement and on the payment history in the app.

The annual enhancement fee, typically $49, hits roughly two months after your original signup date. To avoid it, your cancellation needs to be processed by the 25th of the month before the annual fee is charged. Once charged, the annual fee is generally nonrefundable. If part of your reason for canceling is avoiding this fee, back-calculate from your enrollment date and give yourself a cushion of at least a week.

One more fee to check for: if you signed a 12-month commitment and want to cancel before it expires, expect a $58 buyout fee on top of your final month’s dues. No-commitment memberships don’t carry this fee. Confirm which type you have before you start the cancellation call.

Stopping the Bank Draft Isn’t the Same as Canceling

If the club refuses to cancel and you’ve exhausted the standard methods, you have a separate legal right to stop the recurring charges at your bank. Under federal Regulation E, you can halt a preauthorized electronic fund transfer by notifying your financial institution at least three business days before the next scheduled payment. The bank can require written confirmation within 14 days of an oral stop-payment request, and if you don’t provide it, the stop order expires.4eCFR. 12 CFR 1005.10 – Preauthorized Transfers

The critical part: stopping the bank draft does not cancel your membership contract. The gym can still consider you an active member accumulating unpaid dues, and that balance can end up in collections months later. Use the bank stop as a protective measure after you’ve formally canceled, not as a substitute for cancellation.

Confirming It Actually Processed

Verification is everything. Monitor your bank statements for at least one full billing cycle after the cancellation date. Expect one final charge covering the remainder of your current billing period, but nothing beyond that. If the annual fee is coming up within your cancellation window, watch for that charge specifically.

Keep a record of the date you canceled, the name of anyone you spoke with, and any confirmation number or email receipt. If a charge appears after cancellation was confirmed, that documentation is what you’ll need to dispute it with your bank or to file a complaint with the FTC. The Planet Fitness app should also show your account status as inactive once the cancellation processes. Log in and verify rather than assuming it went through.
