Can You Cancel Planet Fitness Membership on the App?

You generally cannot cancel a Planet Fitness membership on the app. The standard policy requires written notice delivered either in person at your home club or by certified mail. A small number of members, whose home club sits in a state with consumer protection laws requiring online cancellation, may see a cancel option inside the app or online account, but most people will need to handle this offline. The deadline that matters: your home club must receive the cancellation by the 10th of the month to stop the next monthly charge on the 17th.1Planet Fitness. Planet Fitness Customer Service and FAQ

Why the App Doesn’t Let You Cancel

Planet Fitness clubs are mostly franchise-owned, and cancellations are processed at the individual club level rather than through a centralized digital system. The company’s policy requires written notice so the home club can verify your identity and process the request locally. The app handles check-ins, workout tracking, your membership ID, and home club details, but stops short of ending the agreement.2Planet Fitness. Planet Fitness Mobile App

Before you commit to an in-person visit or a trip to the post office, it’s worth checking whether the app shows a cancel option for your account. Open the app, go to account settings, and look for a cancellation link. If one appears, use it and screenshot every confirmation screen. If nothing appears, you’re in the majority and will need one of the methods below.

When an Online Option Might Appear

A handful of states have enacted consumer protection laws requiring businesses with automatic-renewal subscriptions to offer an online cancellation method when the original signup happened online. The strongest versions require a clearly located cancel button or link inside your online account. Planet Fitness uses your home club location to decide whether to show the digital option, so members whose home club is registered in one of these states may see something that members elsewhere do not.

At the federal level, the FTC finalized a Click-to-Cancel rule in October 2024 that would have required sellers across industries to make cancellation as easy as signup.3Federal Trade Commission. Federal Trade Commission Announces Final Click-to-Cancel Rule Making It Easier for Consumers to End Recurring Subscriptions and Memberships A federal appeals court later vacated that rule, so it is not currently enforceable nationwide. State-level protections are the main source of online cancellation rights for gym memberships right now.

Canceling in Person at Your Home Club

Visiting your home club is the most direct route. You can only cancel at the location where your membership is registered, not at any Planet Fitness. Bring a photo ID and know your membership ID number, which lives in the app under the digital key tag icon. At the front desk, ask to cancel, and staff will hand you a cancellation form.

The form asks for your full name as it appears on the account, your membership ID, contact information, and a signature. Fill it out completely and ask for a signed or stamped copy before you leave. This part is non-negotiable. Without that copy, you have no proof the cancellation was submitted, and disputes over whether the gym received your notice are the single most common complaint about this process. If a staff member says they’ll take care of it without handing you a physical confirmation, politely insist.

Canceling by Certified Mail

If you’ve moved away from your home club or want to skip the in-person visit, send a cancellation letter by certified mail with return receipt requested. Include your full name, membership ID, home club name and address, your mailing address, phone number, and a clear statement that you’re canceling your membership. Sign and date it.

Send the letter to your home club’s physical address, not to corporate. Corporate doesn’t process individual cancellations. USPS Certified Mail with Return Receipt runs roughly $8 to $10 total, depending on whether you choose a physical or electronic return receipt.4United States Postal Service. Insurance and Extra Services The return receipt gives you a signed confirmation that someone at the club received your letter, and that kind of evidence ends billing disputes quickly.

Keep copies of everything: the letter, the certified mail receipt, and the return receipt when it comes back. If the gym continues billing you after receiving the letter, that paper trail is what protects you.

Timing the Cancellation to Avoid Extra Charges

Planet Fitness bills monthly memberships on the 17th. To stop the next charge, your home club must receive your cancellation notice by the 10th, which gives roughly seven business days to process the change before billing runs. Miss the 10th and you’ll pay for one more month with no refund.1Planet Fitness. Planet Fitness Customer Service and FAQ

The annual fee follows a separate deadline. Planet Fitness charges an annual fee, typically around $49, once per year on top of monthly dues.5Planet Fitness. Planet Fitness Home To avoid it, complete your cancellation by the 25th of the month before the annual fee is scheduled to hit. If your annual fee bills on February 1, you need to cancel on or before January 25. The exact date depends on when you signed up, so check your billing history in the app or on your bank statement.

If you’re canceling by mail, count backward. A letter dropped in the box on the 8th might not arrive by the 10th. Give yourself at least a week of lead time, and remember that the club must receive the letter by the deadline, not just have it postmarked.

Freezing Your Membership Instead

If you’re dealing with something temporary like travel, injury, or a tight month, freezing your membership may fit better than canceling. A freeze pauses monthly dues while keeping your membership intact, so you don’t re-enroll later at potentially higher rates. Most clubs allow freezes of one to three months, and medical or military situations can sometimes extend to six months with documentation.

Freezes are handled at the home club, not through the app. You’ll need to call or visit. A few catches: the annual fee still applies during a freeze, so you’ll be charged that even while monthly payments are paused. Some franchise locations charge a small monthly fee during the freeze while others waive it. Ask about the specific terms at your club before committing, and get the freeze confirmation in writing.

If Charges Keep Coming After You Cancel

If you followed the process and still see Planet Fitness charges on your statement, contact your home club first with your proof of cancellation: the signed form, the certified mail receipt, or the app confirmation screenshot. Most of the time this resolves the issue, since the charge was a processing delay rather than a refusal.

If the club won’t cooperate, dispute the charge with your bank or credit card company and provide your cancellation documentation. Banks generally side with cardholders who can show a clear paper trail. A written complaint to your state attorney general’s consumer protection division often motivates a resolution when the club is unresponsive.

Simply blocking Planet Fitness charges through your bank does not cancel the membership. The agreement is a contract, and unpaid charges continue to accrue whether or not you’re using the gym. Cancel through one of the accepted methods, keep every scrap of documentation, and treat your proof as the thing that separates a quick fix from a months-long billing headache.
