You can get a car for three months, but not through a standard lease — those run two to four years and punish early exit. The three routes that actually work are taking over the final months of someone else’s lease (a lease assumption), signing up for a month-to-month vehicle subscription, or booking a long-term rental. Each has its own price range, credit check, and restrictions, and one of them — the assumption — often gets ruled out by the lender for exactly the short window you need.
Taking Over Someone Else’s Lease
A lease assumption lets you step into another driver’s contract for whatever time is left on it. If someone has three to six months remaining and wants out, you pick up their monthly payments, their mileage cap, and their maintenance responsibilities until turn-in. The leasing company has to approve the transfer, and the terms are fixed: you cannot renegotiate the payment, the mileage allowance, or the residual value.1GM Financial. Lease Assumption | GM Lease Transfer Process
Under UCC Article 2A, which governs personal property leases, accepting a transferred lease creates an enforceable promise to perform the original lessee’s duties.2Legal Information Institute (LII) / Cornell Law School. UCC 2A-303 – Alienability of Party’s Interest Under Lease Contract You are legally on the hook for every remaining payment, the condition of the car at turn-in, and any mileage overages, even if you only drive it for three months.
The Lender Restriction That Can Rule This Out
Before you count on an assumption as your three-month plan, check the lender’s rules. GM Financial will not approve a transfer if the lease is within its last six months, which effectively kills a three-month takeover of any GM-financed vehicle.1GM Financial. Lease Assumption | GM Lease Transfer Process Other lenders set their own minimum remaining terms, and some don’t allow transfers at all. Confirm with the specific leasing company that transfers are permitted and that the remaining term qualifies before you spend time hunting for a car.
GM Financial also requires the vehicle to be registered and titled in the new lessee’s state, and the account has to be current throughout the transfer.1GM Financial. Lease Assumption | GM Lease Transfer Process Other lenders have their own versions of these conditions. If any requirement is not met, the transfer is denied regardless of your credit.
Where to Find a Lease to Assume
Two online marketplaces connect people trying to exit a lease with people who want a short-term car: Swapalease and LeaseTrader. Outgoing lessees post the vehicle, the remaining term, and the monthly payment, and both platforms charge fees to both sides. Swapalease charges buyers a one-time registration fee of roughly $60; LeaseTrader uses a monthly subscription running about $10 to $35. Sellers pay listing fees plus a success or commission fee when a transfer goes through.
These sites only make the match. The approval, paperwork, and legal transfer still happen through the leasing company, which means you still face the lender’s credit check, transfer restrictions, and fees.
Vehicle Subscription Services
A subscription works on a different model entirely. You pay one monthly fee that bundles insurance, maintenance, and roadside assistance together.3Enterprise Rent-A-Car. How Does a Car Subscription Work and What Are the Benefits? The arrangement renews month to month, so you can keep the car for exactly three months and walk away without an early termination penalty. The provider owns the vehicle; you’re paying for access.
Monthly fees generally run from about $500 to over $1,500 depending on the vehicle and the provider. Economy and midsize sedans sit at the low end, luxury vehicles and SUVs at the top. Subscribe with Enterprise, Porsche Drive, and smaller regional operators each run their own lineups, and availability is often limited to specific metro areas, so check your city before planning around it.
The trade-off is price. Over three months, a subscription will almost always cost more per month than a comparable lease payment. What you avoid is the down payment, the disposition fee, and the long-term commitment. For a temporary work assignment, a gap between vehicles, or a trial run in a new city, the premium is often worth the simplicity.
Long-Term Car Rentals
Traditional rental companies offer monthly rates that can work for a 90-day stretch. Daily rates for long-term rentals run roughly $35 to $45, or about $3,000 to $4,000 over three months. That’s more than three months of lease payments, but the process is fast: no transfer paperwork, no end-of-lease inspection, no credit review beyond the standard rental check.
Rentals also let you add insurance through the rental company, which helps if you don’t carry your own auto policy. The downside is cost. For anything past a few weeks, rentals get expensive compared to the other two options. If budget matters most, look at an assumption or subscription. If you need a car today and don’t want paperwork, a rental gets you driving the same day.
Costs and Fees to Plan For
With a subscription or a rental, most costs are bundled into the monthly or daily rate. The higher sticker price already covers the provider’s exposure. Fuel and tolls are on you regardless.
A lease assumption is where the fee list grows. Expect several of these:
- Transfer fee charged by the leasing company. GM Financial charges $625; other lenders commonly fall in the $300 to $800 range.1GM Financial. Lease Assumption | GM Lease Transfer Process
- Disposition fee at lease-end, usually $300 to $400, to cover inspection, reconditioning, and resale. You pay this as the person turning the car in.
- Mileage overage charges, typically $0.15 to $0.30 per mile over the contract cap. You inherit the previous driver’s mileage, so check the odometer before signing — if most of the allowance is already gone, you can blow through the cap in weeks.
- Excess wear and tear charges at turn-in for dents, scratches through the paint, tire tread below the contract minimum, interior damage, or missing equipment. You’re responsible regardless of when the damage happened, which is why documenting the car’s condition up front matters.
- Registration and title fees to put the car in your name, which vary by state but can easily reach a few hundred dollars.
- Sales tax, which most states apply to each monthly payment, though some tax the full vehicle value instead.
Credit, Insurance, and Documentation
Every route requires a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance. Leasing companies usually demand higher liability coverage than state minimums: bodily injury of at least $100,000 per person and $300,000 per accident, plus property damage of at least $50,000, is a common threshold. Read the specific contract before adjusting your policy.
A lease assumption triggers a hard credit pull. Thresholds vary, but a score of at least 620 is generally needed, and 680 or higher makes approvals smoother. Near the floor, the lender may ask for a larger security deposit or decline the transfer outright. You’ll also submit employment history and income verification.
Subscriptions and long-term rentals check credit too, but they’re usually less strict. Subscription services tend to accept applicants who meet basic creditworthiness standards; rental companies mainly want a valid license and a card with enough hold capacity.
Don’t Sign a Standard Lease Planning to Break It
Some people think about signing a normal two- or three-year lease and simply ending it after three months. It almost never works out. The early termination charge is typically the difference between the remaining lease balance and the car’s current market value, and because cars depreciate fastest in their first months, that gap is widest early on.4Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. Vehicle Leasing – Up-Front, Ongoing, and End-of-Lease Costs The penalty can easily reach several thousand dollars on top of what you’ve already paid, plus disposition and other end-of-lease charges.
Unless you have a contract with an unusually low early termination clause — rare — any of the three short-term routes above will cost less than signing and breaking a standard lease for ninety days of driving.
