You cannot legally make your own postage stamps at home with custom images or artwork. The USPS shut down its Customized Postage program in 2020, and printing anything designed to pass as a real stamp is a federal crime. What you can do is print valid USPS postage labels from your computer through authorized services, some of them free, and those labels get your mail delivered exactly the way a stamp would.
Why Custom Photo Stamps Don’t Exist Anymore
For years, a small number of licensed companies sold real USPS stamps featuring personal photos, business logos, or custom artwork. That program ended in June 2020. Websites still advertising “custom stamps” today are selling rubber stamps or decorative stickers, not valid postage. There is no current legal path to putting your own image on a piece of mail as postage.
Printing Fake Stamps Is a Federal Crime
Before considering any workaround, know what the law says. Forging or counterfeiting postage stamps, printing unauthorized reproductions, or knowingly using or selling counterfeit postage can result in a fine, up to five years in federal prison, or both.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 18 U.S. Code 501 – Postage Stamps, Postage Meter Stamps, and Postal Cards The U.S. Postal Inspection Service has warned that both sellers and buyers who knowingly use fake stamps face criminal and civil liability, and it has flagged counterfeit postage sold through online marketplaces as a growing problem.2United States Postal Inspection Service. Photocopying a real stamp or a label you already used falls squarely inside that law. Every legitimate printed label is tied to a unique paid transaction, and duplicates get flagged and pulled from the mailstream.
The Legal Alternative: PC Postage
PC Postage is the USPS-authorized system that lets you print shipping labels and letter postage from your own computer. A handful of private companies are authorized to operate these systems under 39 CFR Part 501.3eCFR. 39 CFR Part 501 – Authorization to Manufacture and Distribute Postage Evidencing Systems Each label carries an encrypted barcode called an Intelligent Mail Indicium that ties the postage to a specific paid transaction.4Federal Register. Authorization To Manufacture and Distribute Postage Evidencing Systems
These labels are not decorative. They look like standard shipping labels with barcodes, addresses, and printed postage amounts. You are not designing artwork. You are generating a proof of payment that automated sorting equipment can read.
What It Costs and Who Provides It
PC Postage does not automatically mean a monthly bill. The providers fall into two groups.
Free services include the USPS’s own Click-N-Ship, which requires nothing more than a free USPS.com account and a printer.5USPS.com. Click-N-Ship – The Basics Some third-party providers such as Pirate Ship also charge no monthly fees, subscriptions, or markups.
Subscription services include Stamps.com, one of the oldest PC Postage providers, at $14.99 per month with additional features aimed at higher-volume shippers.6Stamps.com. Buy Postage Online, Print USPS Stamps and Shipping Labels
All of them need a payment method on file. When you generate a label, the postage is charged immediately based on the mail class and weight you picked.
Printer and Label Supplies
A standard inkjet handles labels fine for occasional use. If you ship regularly, a thermal label printer skips ink costs and produces cleaner barcodes. Adhesive label stock sized to 4″ x 6″ is the standard for packages. For letters, many services let you print postage directly on the envelope or on smaller adhesive strips.
The USPS recommends putting a strip of clear packaging tape over the printed address to prevent smearing in transit.7United States Postal Service. Preparing Packages Try not to cover the barcode itself. Tape reflections can throw off automated scanners.
How to Print a Postage Label
The steps are the same across providers. Log in, enter the recipient’s address, and enter the weight and dimensions of the mailpiece. The software calculates the rate. Pick the mail class (First-Class, Priority Mail, Ground Advantage, and so on), confirm payment, and the system generates a single label image with the encrypted barcode, postage amount, and delivery address. Print it, stick it on, and it is ready to mail.
For letters, Click-N-Ship and some other services let you feed envelopes through your printer and print postage in the upper right corner where a stamp would normally sit. The label has to be clearly legible. Smudged or damaged labels can cause delays or returns.
You Actually Save Money
Home-printed postage costs less than counter stamps. A one-ounce First-Class letter is $0.78 with a Forever stamp bought at the post office.8United States Postal Service. First-Class Mail and Postage The same letter with metered or PC Postage is $0.74, and commercial online rates for First-Class Mail start as low as $0.593.9United States Postal Service. Postage Rates and Prices Priority Mail and Ground Advantage packages bought online routinely run 10 to 20 percent below counter prices.
Where You Can Drop Off Home-Printed Mail
Home-printed labels have a real drop-off advantage. Packages bearing physical stamps that weigh more than 10 ounces or are thicker than half an inch cannot go into blue collection boxes, lobby mail slots, or building mail chutes. Those must be handed to a postal employee at a retail counter.10United States Postal Service. Package Security Enhancements Begin This Month
Packages with printed online labels are exempt from that 10-ounce restriction because the label ties the package to a verified sender and payment.10United States Postal Service. Package Security Enhancements Begin This Month You can drop them in collection boxes, schedule a carrier pickup, or leave them for your regular carrier.
International Shipments
International mail adds customs forms. Most international packages need electronic customs data, and you generate that through Click-N-Ship or another PC Postage service at the same time you print the label. The customs form and shipping label print as one document.11USPS. Customs Forms
Descriptions have to be specific. “Clothes” or “electronics” will get rejected; “men’s cotton shirts” or “laptop computer” will not. Each item needs its own declared value, and you have to provide full names, physical addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses for sender and recipient.11USPS. Customs Forms Miss any of that and customs in the destination country can reject, return, or destroy the package. First-Class Mail International letters and large envelopes under about 16 ounces are the exception and do not require customs forms.
Refunds for Misprinted Labels
If a label prints with the wrong address, wrong weight, or comes out garbled, you can ask for a refund. Requests must be submitted within 30 days of the date on the postage indicium, and you submit through your PC Postage provider rather than directly to the USPS.12USPS.com. Is PC Postage Eligible for a Refund? The label has to be unused, complete, and legible.
Processing takes up to 14 days, and the refund itself can take another one to two billing cycles to show up on your card statement. Some providers charge a small processing fee.12USPS.com. Is PC Postage Eligible for a Refund? The 30-day window is firm, so do not let a bad label sit in a drawer.
