A Canadian work permit can be issued the same day at a port of entry or take several months, and the range is that wide because three things drive the clock: whether your employer needs a Labour Market Impact Assessment, which visa office handles your file, and how complete your application is when you submit it. As a rough benchmark, Canada work permit processing time for LMIA-required jobs runs two to three months for the assessment step alone before the permit application even starts, while LMIA-exempt workers from visa-exempt countries can sometimes walk across the border with a permit in hand the same day.
The LMIA Step Is Usually the Longest Part
If the job requires a Labour Market Impact Assessment, your employer applies to Employment and Social Development Canada first, and you cannot submit your work permit application until that assessment is positive. The LMIA is a document confirming that no Canadian citizen or permanent resident is available to fill the position, and it exists as a separate process with its own queue.
ESDC publishes average processing times by stream every month. The February 2026 figures give a realistic picture of the spread:
- Global Talent Stream: 12 business days
- Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program: 10 business days
- Agricultural stream: 15 business days
- Low-wage stream: 48 business days
- High-wage stream: 60 business days
- Permanent resident stream: 244 business days
These are averages and can shift significantly month to month with application volume.1Employment and Social Development Canada. Labour Market Impact Assessment Application Processing Times Most standard work permits go through the high-wage or low-wage stream, so budgeting two to three months for the LMIA alone is realistic. The permit application to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada still comes after that.
Work Permit Processing After (or Without) an LMIA
Once the LMIA is positive, or immediately if your position is LMIA-exempt, you submit the work permit application to IRCC. There is no single published figure for how long this takes. Times depend on which visa office handles your file and are updated in IRCC’s online processing times tool, which lets you enter your country and application type to see a current estimate.2Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Check Current IRCC Processing Times
Two patterns show up consistently. Applications from visa-required countries generally take longer than those from visa-exempt countries, because the file goes through a visa office with its own backlog. And applications filed from inside Canada, such as extensions and employer changes, tend to run longer than fresh applications from abroad because the domestic queue is heavier.
LMIA-exempt permits move faster overall because they skip the ESDC step entirely. Common LMIA-exempt categories include intra-company transfers, professionals covered by the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement, International Experience Canada participants, and spouses of certain skilled workers.3Government of Canada. Two-Week Processing Under the Global Skills Strategy
The Global Skills Strategy targets high-skilled workers and aims for two-week processing on qualifying work permit applications. Two groups qualify: workers whose employer obtained an LMIA through the Global Talent Stream, and LMIA-exempt workers in high-level management or professional occupations applying for employer-specific permits from outside Canada.4Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Hire Through the Global Skills Strategy: How to Get Faster Processing
The two-week clock is fragile. Every document must be in on time, and biometrics must be completed within two weeks of receiving the instruction letter. A single missing form drops the application out of the expedited stream.
Same-Day Permits at the Border
Applicants from visa-exempt countries and lawful permanent residents of the United States can apply for a work permit directly at a Canadian port of entry and receive it the same day. This is the fastest route available. You still need every supporting document with you, including either a positive LMIA or an offer of employment number from your employer, but you skip the IRCC processing queue entirely.5Government of Canada. Work Permit: Who Can Apply
Port-of-entry processing is not available to everyone. You cannot use it if you need a visitor visa to enter Canada, if you are applying under the Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program, or if you are seeking a post-graduation work permit. Citizens of certain countries are also excluded regardless of other factors, and IRCC recommends applying online before you travel even when you are eligible for border processing.5Government of Canada. Work Permit: Who Can Apply
Flagpoling, the practice of temporary residents briefly leaving Canada and re-entering to obtain a new permit at the border, is now subject to service restrictions at certain crossings in Quebec, Ontario, and British Columbia. Specific days and hours apply, and the Canada Border Services Agency posts the current schedule.
What Actually Delays Applications
Once your file is with IRCC, the fastest way to lose weeks is to submit something incomplete. IRCC does not begin full processing until every required document is on file, and an incomplete submission effectively resets the clock. The pieces that most often cause delay:
- Police certificates from every country where you have lived for more than six months since age 18. Some countries take weeks to issue these.6Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. IMM 5895 E – Work Permit Application Instructions
- A medical exam by a designated panel physician, required if you will stay longer than six months and have lived in or traveled to certain designated countries, or if the job involves close contact with people in healthcare, childcare, or education.7Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Medical Exams for Visitors, Students and Workers
- Biometrics. After you submit and pay, IRCC issues an instruction letter and you have 30 days to visit an authorized collection site for fingerprints and a photo. Processing does not move forward until biometrics are on file.8Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Where to Give Your Fingerprints and Photo
- Education and experience proof, including degrees and reference letters describing specific duties and dates from previous employers.6Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. IMM 5895 E – Work Permit Application Instructions
Most applicants apply online through an IRCC secure account; paper applications are no longer accepted for most work permit categories.9Government of Canada. Work Permit: How to Apply IRCC may request additional documents or, less commonly, an interview during processing. You can track status through your account, but there is no reliable way to speed processing once the file is in the queue.
Getting the Actual Permit After Approval
Approval from abroad does not arrive as a work permit in the mail. IRCC issues a port-of-entry letter of introduction confirming approval, and you present it, along with your passport and supporting documents, to a border services officer when you arrive in Canada. The officer prints the actual permit at that point.10Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Work Permit: Arrive in Canada Read the printed permit before you leave the crossing. Errors in your name, employer, job title, or duration are much easier to correct at the border than after entry.
If you are from a visa-required country and plan to leave and return to Canada, a work permit does not double as a temporary resident visa; a TRV is a separate application.11Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Visitor Visas for Workers and Students: How to Apply from Inside Canada
Extensions From Inside Canada and Maintained Status
If you are already working in Canada and want to keep working past your permit’s expiry date, apply for an extension before the current permit runs out. As long as the extension is submitted on time, you have maintained status and can continue working under the conditions of your original permit while IRCC processes the new application.12Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. I Applied for a New Work Permit. Can I Stay in Canada if My Work Permit Expires? This protection matters because in-Canada extension processing consistently takes longer than initial applications from abroad.
If the extension is refused, maintained status ends the moment the refusal is issued. You lose work authorization and are out of status. From there you have 90 days to apply for restoration of temporary resident status. Miss that window and you must leave Canada. Restoration requires its own fee and a complete new work permit application meeting all eligibility requirements, including a valid LMIA if one was needed originally. Filing your extension early enough to leave room for a refusal and a restoration attempt is one of the most useful pieces of planning for anyone working in Canada on a time-limited permit.
