Cayman Islands Passport: Eligibility, Documents, and Fees

The Cayman Islands passport is a British Overseas Territories Citizen (BOTC) travel document that confirms both your identity and your nationality connection to the Cayman Islands. It is issued under the authority of His Majesty’s Government in the United Kingdom, printed at the UK Passport Office, and administered locally through the Passport & Corporate Services Office at Sussex House in George Town.¹ Adult passports are valid for ten years, children’s passports for five, and an adult application currently costs CI$100.²

Who Qualifies

Only people with British Overseas Territories Citizen status connected to the Cayman Islands can hold this passport. That status flows from the British Nationality Act 1981.³ You can acquire it by birth in the territory to a settled parent, by descent from a BOTC parent, or through registration or naturalization.

In practice, the passport is closely tied to Caymanian Status (sometimes called Belonger Status), which gives you the unrestricted right to live and work in the islands. People not born Caymanian typically reach BOTC status through a multi-step immigration path: years of legal residence, permanent residency, and then naturalization under the British Nationality Act. Naturalization requires at least five years of legal residence in the Cayman Islands plus a period of permanent residency. The full timeline from a first work permit to Caymanian Status often runs well beyond that. First-time applicants need a naturalization or registration certificate to prove their BOTC connection.

BOTC Passport or Full British Passport

The standard document is the blue-cover BOTC passport. Adults get a ten-year book; children under 16 get a five-year book. If you’re within two weeks of turning 16, you can apply for the adult version.⁴

Most Cayman BOTCs are also full British Citizens. The British Overseas Territories Act 2002 automatically granted British Citizenship to most existing BOTCs on 21 May 2002.⁵ That’s why many Caymanians carry two books. The BOTC passport gives visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to roughly 100 countries and territories, which is meaningfully less than a full British Citizen passport. The British passport also carries the right of abode in the United Kingdom. Applications for the British book go through the Cayman Islands Government Office in the UK or the local Passport & Corporate Services Office and carry their own fees.¹

Traveling to the United States

U.S. entry works differently for Cayman passport holders than for most travelers. The BOTC passport does not use the standard Visa Waiver Program or ESTA. Instead, you apply for a Cayman-specific visa waiver through the Passport & Corporate Services Office.⁶ Two limits matter before you book:

Each waiver is good for one trip only. A new waiver is needed for every visit.
It is valid only for direct travel from the Cayman Islands to the U.S. Connecting through another country breaks it.

Frequent travelers usually apply for a full U.S. visa. If you also hold a British Citizen passport, ESTA is often the easier route and covers multiple entries over two years.

Documents You’ll Need

First-time applications and renewals require the same core documents. Have these ready before you fill out the form:

Original birth certificate
Naturalization or registration certificate confirming BOTC status
Any previous passports, including expired ones
Two passport-sized photos, professionally printed, 45mm, full face on a plain background

Forms are available on the government website or at the Passport & Corporate Services Office. A countersignatory is often required, particularly if your appearance has changed since your last photo or if you’re applying for a child. The countersignatory verifies your identity and certifies the photograph. They must hold a current British, Irish, EU, U.S., or Commonwealth passport and have known you personally for at least two years. Applications move faster when the countersignatory holds a British passport.⁷

Fees

Fees are paid when you submit the application:

Adult passport: CI$100
Child passport (under 16): CI$75
Senior citizens (65 and older): free
Express processing: CI$50 additional

The senior waiver covers first-time applications, renewals, name changes, replacements for lost or stolen passports, temporary passports, and U.S. visa waiver services.²⁸

Applying for a Child

A child under 16 needs permission from every person with parental responsibility. When the parents are married, one parent signs the application at Section 9 and the other provides a separate consent letter along with a copy of ID such as a driver’s licence or voter registration card.⁹ This is the step that trips up the most families. Arrive without both parents’ consent documented and the application will not be accepted.

For child applications, the countersignatory confirms they have known the parent who signed the form (not necessarily the child) for at least two years.⁷

Where to Submit and How Long It Takes

Every application, including renewals, must be submitted in person at the Passport & Corporate Services Office at Sussex House, 128 Elgin Avenue, George Town.² There is no online submission. Residents of Cayman Brac and Little Cayman can submit through the District Administration office.

Staff review everything on the spot before accepting the application, so a missing document means another trip. Accepted applications are forwarded to His Majesty’s Passport Office in the UK, where all biometric BOTC passports are printed.¹⁰ Standard processing takes at least six weeks, and often eight or more during the summer peak.⁴ Express service for an extra CI$50 significantly shortens the wait.² If travel is booked inside two months, express is worth it. You’ll be notified when the book is ready for collection at the George Town office.

Replacing a Lost, Stolen, or Damaged Passport

If a passport is genuinely gone, report the loss or theft to the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service. This is not optional. The report triggers notification to INTERPOL, which immediately invalidates the passport for travel worldwide.¹¹

Then complete the Lost or Stolen Passport Notification form. Submitting it permanently cancels the passport. If the old one turns up in a coat pocket later, it’s dead and should be returned to the Passport Office. The notification form on its own does not produce a replacement. You still submit a full passport application with the supporting documents and standard fee alongside it.¹¹
