CFA Exam Levels, Requirements, and Charter Process: Costs and Scoring

The CFA exam has three levels and requirements that build on each other: Level I is a 180-question multiple-choice test of fundamentals, Level II uses case-based item sets to test analysis, and Level III adds written essay responses focused on portfolio management. To sit for any of them you need a qualifying education or work background, a valid passport, and a clean professional conduct disclosure. Passing all three is only part of the picture, because the charter itself also requires 4,000 hours of qualifying investment work, professional references, and CFA Institute membership.

Who Can Register

You qualify to enroll in the CFA Program in one of three ways: holding a bachelor’s degree or equivalent, being within twenty-three months of completing your undergraduate degree, or having at least 4,000 hours of professional work experience accumulated over a minimum of three years.1CFA Institute. CFA Program Enrollment Requirements A combination of education and work also counts, provided the total spans at least three years. The work used to enroll does not have to be investment-related; the work used later to earn the actual charter does.

Every candidate needs a valid international travel passport for exam-day identification. The CFA Institute no longer collects your passport number during registration, but you must present the physical document at the testing center.2CFA Institute. CFA Program Identification Policy If you cannot obtain a passport, the institute accepts an alternate government-issued travel document that permits unrestricted international travel, is original, is in English, is current, and carries a recognizable photograph.3CFA Institute. Each time you register for an exam, you also complete a Professional Conduct Inquiry form disclosing past professional misconduct, criminal convictions, or sanctions from financial regulators.4CFA Institute. Professional Conduct Statement The institute reassesses your standing before every sitting, and untruthful answers can disqualify you from the program.

Attempt and Frequency Limits

You get a maximum of six attempts per level. Fail the same level six times and you are permanently barred from registering for it, even if you open a new account. Partially completed exams, including sitting for only one of two sessions, still count toward the limit.5CFA Institute. CFA Exam Eligibility Policy You can also take the exam only twice per calendar year, and those two sittings cannot fall in consecutive windows or within six months of each other.6CFA Institute. The Three Exam Levels

All three levels draw from a single body of knowledge covering ethics, quantitative methods, economics, financial reporting, corporate finance, equity and fixed-income investments, derivatives, alternative investments, and portfolio management. Ethics carries heavy weight at every level because the institute treats professional integrity as inseparable from technical competence.

Level I: Fundamentals

Level I tests your grasp of fundamental investment concepts through 180 multiple-choice questions, split into two sessions of 90 questions with 135 minutes each.7CFA Institute. CFA Program Level I Exam That averages about 90 seconds per question. The goal is breadth: showing you understand the whole curriculum before specializing.

Level II: Analysis and Application

Level II moves from recall to applied analysis. You answer 22 item sets, each built around a short case study (called a vignette) followed by four multiple-choice questions, for 88 questions in total.8CFA Institute. CFA Program Level II Exam The curriculum leans heavily into asset valuation across equity, fixed income, and derivatives. You read data, apply formulas, and reach conclusions from scenarios that resemble real investment problems.

Level III: Portfolio Management and Essays

Level III centers on portfolio management and wealth planning. The exam contains 11 item sets and 11 constructed-response (essay) sets, each worth 12 points.9CFA Institute. CFA Program Level III Exam The essays ask you to justify investment recommendations in writing, not just pick an answer. A typical question might have you draft an investment policy statement for an individual client or explain how to rebalance an institutional portfolio under stated constraints. Candidates who leaned on process of elimination at earlier levels tend to struggle, because written reasoning leaves nowhere to hide.

How the Exams Are Scored

There is no fixed passing score. A panel sets the Minimum Passing Score after each administration, adjusting for the difficulty of that version through a process called equating.10CFA Institute. CFA Exam Results and Pass Rates The bar shifts slightly from sitting to sitting, and the exact score needed is never published in advance.

Recent pass rates give you a realistic sense of the odds: the February 2026 Level I pass rate was 45%, the August 2025 Level II pass rate was 44%, and the August 2025 Level III pass rate was 50%.10CFA Institute. CFA Exam Results and Pass Rates Fewer than half of the people who start the program ultimately earn the charter. The institute recommends budgeting around 300 hours of study per level, which includes a mandatory Practical Skills Module that applies the curriculum to hands-on tasks.11CFA Institute. Overview of the CFA Program

What the Program Costs and When It Runs

First-time candidates pay a one-time enrollment fee plus a registration fee for each exam. The total across all three levels ranges from $3,520 to $4,600 depending on whether you register during the early or standard window.6CFA Institute. CFA Exam Dates and Fees For reference, Level I early registration is $1,140 and standard registration is $1,490. The early deadline closes months before the exam window.

Exams run four times a year, typically in February, May, August, and November, but not every level is offered in every window.6CFA Institute. CFA Exam Dates and Fees After registering, you schedule a specific date, time, and testing center through the Prometric portal. Book early to secure your preferred location.

Changing your date, time, or test center within the same exam window costs a $250 rescheduling fee, and the request must come in before the published deadline for that window.12CFA Institute. Rescheduling CFA Exam Appointment Rescheduling does not let you defer to a future window. Refunds are available only within fourteen days of your initial registration payment; after that, enrollment and registration fees are nonrefundable under any circumstances, including medical emergencies, and are non-transferable.13CFA Institute. CFA Program Refund Policy Register only when you are confident in your timeline.

From Passing to Charterholder

Clearing all three exams does not, by itself, let you put the CFA letters after your name. You still need qualifying work experience, professional references, and institute membership.

Qualifying Work Experience

You must accumulate at least 4,000 hours over a minimum of 36 months, and that experience has to relate directly to the investment decision-making process.14CFA Institute. Work Experience Self-Assessment Full-time, part-time, and remote work all count, and the hours can be earned before, during, or after the exams. There is no list of excluded job titles; the institute uses a self-assessment questionnaire. Qualifying roles typically involve constructing or rebalancing portfolios, building financial models, making investment decisions from financial and economic data, supervising people who do that work, performing investment advisory or compliance functions, or developing tools and software that directly drive investment decisions.

If you cannot answer “yes” to at least one of the self-assessment questions, your experience does not qualify. Purely sales, marketing, or back-office operations roles sometimes fail this test, so run the self-assessment early rather than after you have already passed Level III.

Membership and References

Once you meet the experience threshold, you apply for regular membership in the CFA Institute. The application requires two professional references if one is an active regular member of the local CFA society you are joining, or three references if none holds that status.15CFA Institute. Application Resources References attest to both your experience and your ethical character.

Membership costs $299 per year, covering July 1 through June 30.15CFA Institute. Application Resources Many charterholders also join a local CFA society, which charges its own dues (typically $35 to $250 in the United States). Once your membership is approved, you are formally authorized to use the CFA designation on professional documents.

Keeping the Charter

The charter is an ongoing commitment. At every annual renewal, you complete a Professional Conduct Statement disclosing any potential violations of the Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct and sign your membership agreement.15CFA Institute. Application Resources

Continuing education is currently voluntary. The institute encourages at least 20 hours of Professional Learning each year, with a minimum of 2 hours on ethics and regulatory content, and you attest to the hours at renewal.16CFA Institute. CFA Institute Regular Membership – Recommended Annual Professional Learning Credits Activities must be relevant to investment professional work, and credits are tracked in quarter-hour increments.

Ethics violations carry real consequences at every stage. Sanctions range from a private reprimand (a confidential written warning) to public censure that includes your name, timed suspension of membership or the designation, permanent bar from the CFA Program, or outright revocation of the charter.17CFA Institute. Disciplinary Sanctions A summary suspension terminates all memberships and program participation at once. These sanctions apply to current candidates as well as charterholders, so misconduct during the exam process itself can end your candidacy before you ever earn the designation.
