The Charlie Kirk crime scene evidence includes a World War I–era Mauser bolt-action rifle wrapped in a towel, four .30-06 cartridges with meme-style engravings, a screwdriver, a palm print, a forearm impression, a shoe impression, surveillance video tracking the shooter across a Utah Valley University rooftop, DNA matches to 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, and a reconstructed handwritten note along with text messages in which Robinson allegedly confessed. One important piece, the bullet-jacket fragment recovered from Kirk’s body, produced an inconclusive ballistics comparison to the recovered rifle, and that gap has become a central fight in the prosecution.
What Investigators Recovered at the Scene
Kirk was shot in the neck at 12:23 p.m. Mountain Time on September 10, 2025, while taking questions near a “Prove Me Wrong” tent in the Sorensen Student Center courtyard.1NPR. Charlie Kirk Shooting Manhunt Suspect Custody Timeline Authorities determined the shot came from a rooftop roughly 150 yards away.
Along the wooded path the shooter used to flee, investigators found a Mauser Model 98 bolt-action rifle chambered in .30-06, wrapped in a towel.2PBS NewsHour. Rifle That Killed Charlie Kirk Was Older Than Serial Numbers Text messages attributed to Robinson show he understood that: he wrote to his roommate, “IDK if it has a serial number but it wouldn’t trace to me.” The rifle reportedly belonged to Robinson’s grandfather, and in another message he worried about what his father “would do if I don’t bring back grandpa’s rifle.”4Fox 13 News. The Engraved Cartridges
The unfired cartridges carried engraved messages drawn from internet subcultures and pop culture. The four inscriptions were:
- “Notices bulges OwO what’s this?” — a meme associated with furry internet subculture.
- “Hey fascist! Catch!” — accompanied by arrow symbols mimicking the controller inputs used to call in a bomb strike in the video game Helldivers 2.
- “Oh Bella ciao Bella ciao Bella ciao ciao ciao” — lyrics from an anti-fascist Italian folk song popularized by the Netflix series Money Heist.
- “If you read this, you are gay lmao” — a troll-style remark.
Robinson described the engravings to his roommate as “mostly a big meme.”7BBC. Tyler Robinson Background Analysts who examined the inscriptions concluded that the messages did not point to a coherent ideology but instead reflected someone deeply embedded in internet subcultures and “digitally inflected irony.”8Vanity Fair. DNA Matches
On September 15, 2025, FBI Director Kash Patel announced that DNA recovered from the towel wrapped around the rifle and from the screwdriver on the rooftop matched Tyler Robinson.9PBS NewsHour. DNA Found Near Scene of Kirks Shooting Matches Suspect The Utah State Bureau of Investigation subsequently reported DNA consistent with Robinson on the rifle’s trigger, the fired cartridge casing, and two unfired cartridges. Defense attorneys have noted that forensic reports indicate DNA from multiple people appeared on some of these items.10The Guardian. Charlie Kirk Bullet Rifle
The Inconclusive Bullet Fragment
The bullet-jacket fragment recovered during Kirk’s autopsy was sent to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives for comparison with the recovered Mauser. The ATF characterized the comparison as “inconclusive,” a finding the defense has used aggressively in pretrial motions.
Forensic experts have explained that “inconclusive” does not mean the bullet came from a different weapon. It means there were not enough microscopic marks on the fragment to reach a definitive match. A 2022 study found that forensic examiners return inconclusive results in roughly 20% of cases, and rifle bullets are especially prone to deformation that limits matching.11Poynter. In June 2026, Judge Tony Graf found Deputy Utah County Attorney Christopher Ballard in civil contempt over the way he had addressed the ballistics issue publicly. The judge ruled that Ballard’s initial comments correcting misimpressions about the report were permissible, but subsequent remarks to TMZ claiming the state had “ample evidence” to convict crossed the line and had “a substantial likelihood of materially prejudicing the proceedings.”12CNN. Surveillance Footage and the Suspect’s Movements
Video from around the campus placed Robinson on the property well before the shooting. He arrived at 8:29 a.m. in a grey Dodge Challenger, wearing a maroon T-shirt and light-colored shorts. By 11:52 a.m., cameras tracked him moving through stairwells to the rooftop overlooking the courtyard, now in dark clothing including a black T-shirt featuring an American flag and a bald eagle.1NPR. Tyler Robinson Charlie Kirk Court Immediately after the shot, surveillance footage captured him running across the rooftop, jumping from the building, and disappearing into a nearby wooded area. He surrendered to police at the Washington County Sheriff’s Office roughly 36 hours later, after a family member relayed to authorities that Robinson had confessed or implied he was the shooter.
The Note and the Text Messages
Prosecutors say Robinson planned the attack for over a week. A handwritten note found under a keyboard at his home read, “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk, and I’m going to take it.” The note had been destroyed, but investigators reconstructed it forensically.5BBC. Charlie Kirk Shooting Evidence15ABC News. Tyler Robinson Set to Face Formal Charges In messages to his roommate and romantic partner, Robinson wrote, “I had enough of his hatred. Some hate can’t be negotiated out.”
After the shooting, Robinson allegedly confessed to his roommate by text. When the roommate asked if he had done it, Robinson responded, “I am, I’m sorry,” then told the roommate to “delete this exchange” and avoid speaking to police or media.16NBC News. Robinson also discussed his involvement in a Discord chat room, writing: “Hey guys, I have bad news for you all. It was me at [Utah Valley University] yesterday. im sorry for all of this.” When users pointed out his resemblance to the police photos of the suspect, he claimed a “doppelganger” was trying to “get me in trouble.”18The Hill. Discord Shooter Investigation FBI FBI Director Patel told Congress on September 16, 2025, that the bureau was investigating more than 20 individuals who participated in that Discord and had preserved the material in an “evidentiary posture.” No additional individuals have been publicly charged as co-conspirators.

Where the Case Stands
As of mid-2026, Robinson has not entered a plea and no trial date has been set. Judge Graf denied a defense motion to disqualify Utah County Attorney Jeffrey Gray and his office, rejected a request to close the preliminary hearing to the public, and barred the public and media only from inspecting or copying exhibits introduced during that hearing.21KSL.
