Contact Information Update Form: IRS, USPS, USCIS, and Deadlines

A contact information update form tells an agency, employer, or company that your address, phone, or email has changed so their records match where you actually are. There is no single universal form. The one you need depends on who holds the record: the IRS uses Form 8822, USPS uses PS Form 3575, USCIS uses AR-11, the Social Security Administration handles it through your my Social Security account, and your state DMV, employer, and bank each have their own channel. A few of these carry hard legal deadlines; the rest are housekeeping that still matters when a notice goes to the wrong address.

Which Form to Use, by Who Holds the Record

Start by identifying the record you need to correct, then go to that agency’s form. Updating one does not update the others.

IRS

Use Form 8822, Change of Address, a one-page PDF at irs.gov.1Internal Revenue Service. About Form 8822, Change of Address The IRS also accepts address changes by written statement, by phone, or simply by using the new address on your next tax return.2Internal Revenue Service. Address Changes Businesses use Form 8822-B, which also covers a change of responsible party and must be filed within 60 days of that change.

USPS

File a Change of Address online at usps.com/manage/forward.htm or on PS Form 3575, which comes inside the free Mover’s Guide packet at any Post Office.3USPS. Standard Forward Mail and Change of Address Online filing costs $1.25 for identity verification. Filing in person with a photo ID is free.

USCIS

Noncitizens report every address change using Form AR-11, Alien’s Change of Address Card.4U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. AR-11, Alien’s Change of Address Card USCIS strongly encourages filing online through a USCIS account at my.uscis.gov, which updates its systems almost immediately.

Social Security Administration

If you receive benefits, sign in to your my Social Security account to change your mailing address and phone. You can also call 1-800-772-1213 or visit a local office.5Social Security Administration. Update Contact Information If you are not yet receiving benefits, the online option is not available; call or make an in-person appointment.

State DMV

Every state requires you to update the address on your driver’s license within a set window after moving, typically 10 to 30 days. Most states let you do this online. Fees range from nothing to around $11. Check your state DMV’s site for the exact deadline and method.

Employers, Banks, and Licensing Boards

Most employer HR portals have a self-service address update near the tax and benefits forms. Banks and brokerages generally offer it inside secure online banking or the mobile app under account settings. State professional licensing boards usually have their own portal; keeping that address current matters for license status.

What to Have Ready Before You Fill One Out

Most of these forms ask for the same core information. Gather it first so you can finish in one sitting:

  • Your full legal name exactly as it appears on the record.
  • The account or ID number the agency uses: Social Security number, employee ID, USCIS Alien Registration number, driver’s license number, or account number.
  • Your old address, phone, or email on file, so the system can match the request to your record.
  • Your new address, mailing address if different, phone, and email.
  • The effective date. Some agencies use it to decide whether you met a reporting deadline.

Pay attention to directionals. Words like “North,” “South,” “East,” and “West” in a street address are routing data for the Postal Service, not decoration. A missing one can send mail to the wrong carrier route.6United States Postal Service. Delivery Address Copy the directional exactly as it appears on mail you already receive.

When a form asks for both a physical address and a mailing address and yours are the same, write “same as above” in the mailing field rather than leaving it blank. Government agencies generally need the physical address; a P.O. Box alone will not satisfy the DMV or voter registration.

Filling It Out Without Getting Rejected

On paper forms, print clearly in black ink. If a field does not apply, write “N/A” instead of leaving it empty. Blank fields look like oversights, and some agencies will reject an incomplete form. Include area codes with every phone number. Put apartment or suite numbers on the line the form provides, not jammed into the street line.

Nearly every update form requires a signature, handwritten on paper or electronic online. An unsigned form is the most common reason for processing delays, so check before you submit. On IRS Form 8822, both spouses must sign if you filed jointly and both are changing their address.2Internal Revenue Service. Address Changes

If Your Name Has Also Changed

A contact information update form changes your address, phone, or email. It does not change your legal name. If your name has changed through marriage, divorce, or a court order, handle that separately, and usually first. The Social Security Administration is the typical starting point: bring original or certified copies of the supporting document (marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order) along with proof of identity such as a U.S. passport or state-issued ID. Photocopies are not accepted. Once SSA updates your name, use the new Social Security card to update your driver’s license, employer records, and financial accounts in sequence.

How to Submit It and How Long It Takes

Each channel trades off speed against proof of delivery.

  • Online portals are the fastest. USPS, USCIS, SSA, most DMVs, and most employers accept digital submissions, and systems typically update within hours or days. USCIS says filing AR-11 online updates its case management system almost immediately.4U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. AR-11, Alien’s Change of Address Card
  • Mail is required when no online option exists. IRS Form 8822 can only be filed by mail, and the correct processing center depends on your old state of residence. Sending it to the wrong one can add weeks. Use certified mail with a return receipt if the form carries a legal deadline.7Internal Revenue Service. Certain Where to File Addresses Updated for Form 8822
  • In person works at USPS, which processes PS Form 3575 at the counter for free with an acceptable ID. Some DMVs and SSA offices also accept walk-ins.3USPS. Standard Forward Mail and Change of Address
  • Phone is accepted by the IRS and SSA. Have your full name, old address, new address, and Social Security number ready.2Internal Revenue Service. Address Changes

Expected processing times:

  • USPS mail forwarding can begin within 3 business days, but USPS recommends allowing up to 2 weeks. A Move Validation letter arrives at your old address, and a Customer Notification Letter at your new address about 5 business days before your start date.3USPS. • USCIS AR-11 filed online updates systems almost immediately.4U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. AR-11, Alien’s Change of Address Card
  • SSA online changes take effect quickly for beneficiaries; phone and in-person vary.
  • Employers and banks typically update within a few business days, though payroll may not reflect the change until the next pay cycle.

Keep every confirmation number, email, and mailing receipt. If you do not receive confirmation within two weeks of the stated timeline, follow up directly. That paper trail is what protects you if a dispute later arises over whether you got a notice or met a deadline.

Deadlines You Can’t Miss

Most contact updates are housekeeping. A few are not.

Immigration: 10 Days

Federal law requires every noncitizen in the United States to notify the government in writing of an address change within 10 days of moving.9Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 8 USC 1305 – Address Change Notification A and G visa holders and visa waiver visitors are exempt.4U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. AR-11, Alien’s Change of Address Card Failing to report can be treated as a misdemeanor and can complicate pending applications or future benefits.

Driver’s License: 10 to 30 Days

Most states give you between 10 and 30 days to update the license address after moving. Some will cite you during a traffic stop if the license address does not match your current residence. Your state DMV publishes the exact window.

IRS: The Last Known Address Trap

The IRS does not penalize a late address update directly, but the downstream risk is real. The IRS sends certain critical notices by certified mail to your “last known address,” including the Notice of Deficiency that gives you the right to challenge a proposed tax bill in Tax Court.10Taxpayer Advocate Service. 90 Day Notice of Deficiency Your last known address is the one on your most recently filed and processed return unless you have sent the IRS clear notification of a new one. If a Notice of Deficiency goes to an old address and you never see it, the 90-day clock to petition Tax Court runs anyway. That deadline cannot be extended. Miss it and the IRS assesses the full proposed amount; your only remaining remedy is audit reconsideration, a much weaker position than Tax Court.
