Cuban Passport Renewal: Fees, 10-Year Validity, and Stay-Abroad Rule

To complete a Cuban passport renewal from abroad, you file the application at your nearest Cuban consulate with your current or expired passport, a completed consular form, two passport photos, and your consular registration card. The fee is $180 for a ten-year adult passport and $140 for a minor’s five-year passport.1Travel.State.Gov. What You Need to Submit

The consulate expects a complete package. Missing or sloppy paperwork is the most common reason applications get sent back.

  • Your current or expired Cuban passport, plus a photocopy.
  • The consular application form, completed in black ink using capital letters, signed in ballpoint pen.
  • Two 2×2 inch color photos with a white or light background, front-facing, head uncovered, no dark glasses. Avoid white clothing so you don’t blend into the background.3CUBADIPLOMATICA. Consular Services – Passport Renewal
  • A photocopy of your consular registration card, especially for mail submissions.

The form itself is where most renewals stall. Any corrections, cross-outs, erasures, or incomplete fields will invalidate it. For any field that doesn’t apply to you, write a dash rather than leaving it blank, because an empty field is read as “none.”4CUBADIPLOMATICA. Consular Services

You can still submit an expired passport. Consular instructions treat renewal as available for passports “about to expire or already expired,” and there is no separate track for a lapsed document.3CUBADIPLOMATICA. Consular Services – Passport Renewal

Consular Registration First

If you haven’t completed your consular registration (inscripción consular), you’ll need to handle that as a separate service before or alongside your renewal. Cuba’s foreign ministry lists it as a distinct procedure, and your registration card is part of the required renewal paperwork.5Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores de Cuba. How to File

Three routes are available.2CUBADIPLOMATICA. Consulate of Cuba in the USA

In person. Visit the consular office directly. The Cuban consular office in the United States is located at 2639 16th Street NW, Washington, D.C. 20009. Review the procedure requirements before going.

By mail. Send the full package with a stamped, self-addressed return envelope. Payment for mail-in applications must be sent as a bank transfer to the consulate’s account in advance.3CUBADIPLOMATICA. Consular Services – Passport Renewal

Through an authorized agency. Several agencies hold contracts with the consulate to handle submissions. They charge a service fee on top of the official tariff, but they can simplify things if you don’t live near Washington.

Processing times aren’t guaranteed and can stretch from several weeks to a few months, with mail submissions generally slower. Plan well ahead of any travel.

Fees

The consular fee is $180 for a ten-year adult passport and $140 for a minor’s five-year passport. Additional fees may apply depending on the specific consulate.1Travel.State.Gov. U.S. Visa – Reciprocity and Civil Documents by Country – Cuba All consular fees are non-refundable, so review your form and documents carefully before submitting. If you’re using an agency, expect a separate service charge.

Ten-Year Validity and No More Extensions

Passports issued since July 1, 2023 are valid for ten years for anyone aged 16 or older and five years for children under 16. The same reform eliminated the prórroga entirely, so you no longer need to pay for a two-year extension to keep the passport active.6CUBADIPLOMATICA. Cuba Extends Passport Validity and Eliminates Extensions

If you still hold a passport issued before July 2023, it follows the old six-year validity rules. Once it expires, your replacement is issued as a ten-year passport under the current system.5Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores de Cuba. Consular Formality Procedures

Renewing a Child’s Passport

The document list is the same as for adults: the child’s current or expired passport, application form, photos, and consular registration card. The fee is $140 and the passport is valid for five years.6CUBADIPLOMATICA. Cuba Extends Passport Validity and Eliminates Extensions

Cuban consulates generally require both parents to authorize a minor’s passport application. If one parent cannot be present, you’ll typically need a notarized authorization or legal documentation such as a sole custody order or a death certificate. The exact paperwork varies by consulate, so ask yours directly before submitting.

Lost, Stolen, or Damaged Passports

If you can’t surrender your old passport, expect a more involved procedure. You’ll need documentation explaining what happened. A police report from the jurisdiction where the loss or theft occurred is a reasonable precaution and may be required, along with a sworn declaration about the circumstances. Replacement in these cases usually takes longer than a routine renewal and may carry a higher fee. Contact your consulate directly, since procedures and identity verification requirements differ from a standard renewal.

Why Renewal Timing Matters for Travel

Cuba requires all its citizens to enter and leave the island on a Cuban passport, even if they hold citizenship elsewhere. A U.S., Canadian, or European passport alone will not clear Cuban immigration.7U.S. Department of State. Cuba International Travel Information Cuba also does not recognize the foreign citizenship of Cuban-born nationals who maintain residency on the island.

General entry regulations for Cuba require any passport to be valid for at least six months from the date of entry.8Cuba Travel. Regulations and Formalities If your passport falls inside that six-month window before your next trip, renew before you travel even if it hasn’t technically expired.

Don’t Forget the 24-Month Stay-Abroad Rule

This is a separate procedure from passport renewal, but it often needs attention at the same time. Cuban citizens who keep permanent resident status in Cuba must return to the island within 24 months of their last departure, or request an extension before that window closes. The extension request must be submitted at your Cuban consulate at least one month before the 24-month mark.5Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores de Cuba.
