Danish Residence Permit Requirements: Work, Study, Family Rules

Non-EU citizens who want to live in Denmark must secure a residence permit before arrival, and the Danish residence permit requirements differ sharply depending on whether the purpose is work, study, or family reunification. All three routes run through the Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration (SIRI) and the New to Denmark portal (nyidanmark.dk), and all three sit under the Aliens Act (Udlændingeloven), which sets some of Europe’s stricter thresholds on salary, funds, age, and integration.

Work Permits: What Qualifies You

Every employment-based permit starts with a concrete job offer from a Danish employer. From there, the route depends on the salary, the occupation, and whether the employer is certified.

Pay Limit Scheme

If your annual salary is high enough, the Pay Limit Scheme is the most direct path. For applications submitted in 2026, the minimum is 552,000 DKK (roughly $87,000 USD).{1The Danish Immigration Service and the Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration. The Pay Limit Scheme’s Minimum Amount} Industry and education do not matter. If the offer clears the floor, you qualify. The threshold adjusts annually, so check the current figure before applying.

Positive List for Skilled Work

If the salary falls short, the Positive List covers occupations where Denmark has a documented shortage, including roles in engineering, healthcare, and information technology. The list refreshes on January 1 and July 1, so a job that qualifies now may not qualify next cycle.{2New to Denmark. The Positive List for Skilled Work} Your job title and duties must match a current entry, and a relevant degree or professional qualification is generally required.

Fast-Track Scheme

Employers certified by SIRI can use the Fast-track Scheme to bring in foreign employees quickly.{3New to Denmark. Certification} A certified company can put the employee to work on the same day the application is filed rather than waiting for a decision.{4New to Denmark. Fast-Track Scheme} The employee still has to meet either the Pay Limit salary or the Positive List conditions.

Start-up Denmark

Entrepreneurs launching an innovative, scalable business apply through Start-up Denmark. Before you can submit the residence permit application, an independent expert panel must approve the business plan. Approved permits run up to two years initially and can be extended for three years at a time.{5Start-up Denmark. Start-up Denmark} The panel looks for innovation and scalability, not conventional small business plans.

Study Permit Requirements

A study permit requires admission to a recognized Danish university or educational institution, confirmed in writing for a full-time program. You also need language proficiency in Danish or English, depending on the program’s language of instruction.

The financial self-sufficiency figure for 2026 is 7,426 DKK per month (about $1,170 USD), documented for up to 12 months of study.{6New to Denmark. Financial Self-Support on Specific SIRI Schemes} That is roughly $14,000 USD for a full academic year, shown through bank statements of disposable funds or a scholarship covering living costs. Students at folk high schools where the course fee already includes room and board are exempt from documenting these funds.

Family Reunification Requirements

Family reunification demands more than proof of marriage. Both the sponsoring spouse in Denmark and the applying spouse must normally be at least 24 years old, though you can file once the younger partner reaches 23 years and six months.{7nyidanmark.dk. Spouse or Cohabiting Partner} The 24-year rule was written to reduce forced marriages and to make sure both partners can decide independently.

Financial Guarantee and Housing

The sponsoring spouse must post a financial guarantee of 61,709.34 DKK at the 2026 level (about $9,700 USD) as a bank deposit or demand guarantee.{8New to Denmark. The Collateral Guarantee – Reduction and Release} The guarantee can be held for up to ten years from the start date and is meant to cover any social assistance the arriving spouse might draw. The couple also has to live in adequately sized housing: no more than two people per room, or at least 20 square meters of living space per person.{9New to Denmark. Family Reunification – Independent Reasonably Sized Residence} Certain residential areas designated as vulnerable under national housing policy may be restricted for family reunification.

Language Tests After Arrival

The obligations continue after arrival. A spouse reunified through this route must pass a Danish language test at the A1 level within six months of being entered in the national civil registration system, and a second test at the A2 level within nine months. Attempting either test on time and failing earns another three months to pass.{10New to Denmark. Test in Danish for Family Reunified Spouses – Deadlines} Missing these deadlines can put continued residence at risk, so enrolling in Danish classes before or right after arrival is worth prioritizing.

Documents, Fees, and the Order of Submission

Every application begins with a valid passport. The U.S. Department of State recommends at least six months of validity when entering the Schengen area, since the passport must remain valid for at least three months beyond your intended departure.{11U.S. Department of State. Denmark International Travel Information}

The sequence is fixed: create a Case Order ID on the New to Denmark website, pay the fee, then submit the application. All three steps must happen in that order.{12New to Denmark. Fee – User Manual} Fees vary by permit. Work permits under the Pay Limit or Positive List schemes are 6,810 DKK (about $1,070 USD), study permits are 3,060 DKK, and au pair or internship permits are 4,305 DKK.{13New to Denmark. Fee – Overview of Fee Rates} Keep the payment confirmation for the application itself.

The form depends on the permit. Work applicants use the AR1 form; family reunification applicants use the FA1 form. Both are available through SIRI’s online portal. False or incomplete information can lead to permit revocation, fines, or imprisonment of up to two years, so accuracy on the form matters.{14The Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration (SIRI). AR1 Online – Declaration and Information}

Biometrics

All applicants must have fingerprints and a photograph recorded. The standard deadline for biometrics is 14 days after filing, currently extended to six weeks.{15New to Denmark. Biometric Features} Biometrics can be recorded at a Danish diplomatic mission abroad or at a citizen service center in Denmark. If you are already in Denmark, MitID digital signatures can complete the online submission. EU and EEA citizens applying under EU regulations are exempt from the biometrics step.

Processing Times and Appeals

SIRI’s service goals for most work permits, including the Pay Limit Scheme, Positive List, and Fast-track Scheme, are one month. Study permits target two months, and extensions of any type target three months.{16New to Denmark. Case Processing Times – SIRI} These are goals, not guarantees, and family reunification cases handled by the Immigration Service instead of SIRI often take longer.

If the application is denied, you can appeal to the Immigration Appeals Board (Udlændingenævnet) within eight weeks of receiving the decision. Miss that deadline and the appeal is automatically rejected, with no discretion.{17Udlændingenævnet (Immigration Appeals Board). Guidelines for Appeal}

Changing Jobs or Losing Employment

A work-based permit is tied to one employer. A new job offer at a different company means filing a fresh residence permit application, but under the job change rule you can start at the new company the same day you file, so there is no gap.{18New to Denmark. The Job Change Rule} The rule also covers moves between schemes, such as Pay Limit to Fast-track. Interns and volunteers cannot use it and must wait for the new permit before starting.

If you lose the job involuntarily through layoffs or downsizing, a job-seeking permit of up to six months may be available. You have to apply within two days of employment ending. The permit covers holders of Pay Limit, Positive List, Researcher, and Fast-track permits, but you cannot work while holding it.{19New to Denmark. Jobseeking Permit for Employees} The two-day window is unforgiving; start preparing the application the moment termination is on the table.

After Arrival: CPR Number and Health Card

Once you arrive with your permit, register for a CPR number, the Danish civil registration number. You must appear in person at a Citizen Service centre or International Citizen Service centre with the residence permit, passport, and proof of a Danish address such as a rental contract. Registration is not possible until you have somewhere to live.{20Life in Denmark. When You Arrive}

Registration is required if you plan to stay three months or more. The CPR number opens access to banking, healthcare, and most public services. At registration you are automatically issued a yellow health card (sundhedskort), which arrives at your Danish address in about two to three weeks and is your entry to the public healthcare system.

Renewal and Permanent Residence

Temporary permits carry fixed expiration dates, and renewal is your responsibility. You can file for renewal up to three months before the current permit expires. Filing on time lets you stay in Denmark while SIRI processes the extension, even if the current permit expires in the meantime.{21Start-up Denmark. Application Guide for Extension} Letting a permit lapse before applying can cost you the legal basis to remain.

The standard threshold for permanent residence is eight years of continuous legal residence, though applicants who meet all four supplementary requirements can qualify after four years.{22New to Denmark. Apply for a Permanent Residence Permit} One of those supplementary requirements is holding regular full-time employment for at least four years within the preceding four and a half.{23New to Denmark. Permanent Residence – Regular Full-Time Employment} The others involve Danish language proficiency, active citizenship contributions, and financial self-sufficiency. Standard work, study, and family reunification permits issued under the Aliens Act generally count toward the clock; certain temporary protection permits do not.
