The AI-Generated Material Law

The second count is the one that drew national legal attention. Authored by Assemblymember Marc Berman and chaptered by the Secretary of State on September 29, 2024, AB 1831 expanded the state’s child pornography statutes to cover material that is digitally altered or generated by artificial intelligence. Before the law, California prohibited only child sexual abuse material depicting real children, a gap the California District Attorneys’ Association had flagged as a loophole.7KCRA.
