When a delivery driver cannot complete an alcohol delivery, the alcohol goes back to the originating store, your order is canceled, and you receive a refund for the alcohol, sometimes reduced by a restocking fee. The driver is not allowed to leave it on your doorstep, hand it to a neighbor, or hold it for a later attempt. Every state treats alcohol delivery as a regulated handoff that requires a sober adult with valid ID on the receiving end, so once that handoff fails, the transaction closes.
Where the Alcohol Goes
It goes back to the store it came from. Drivers have no authority to leave alcohol unattended, drop it with someone else at the address, or stash it for a second try later in the day.
DoorDash instructs drivers to return the alcohol to the store or dispose of it under the platform’s guidelines. If your order mixed alcohol with other items, the non-alcohol items can still be left at your door, but the alcohol itself comes back.1DoorDash. What if the customer is unavailable during an alcohol delivery? Instacart handles it the same way: the shopper refunds the alcohol and returns it to the store.2Instacart. Common-carrier shipments work slightly differently. UPS treats any spirits shipment where the recipient fails to present proper identification as undeliverable and returns the package to the shipper rather than holding it at a distribution center for pickup.3UPS. How To Ship Spirits FedEx offers one practical alternative: alcohol shipments can be redirected to a FedEx hold location where an adult signs for them in person.4FedEx. Once the alcohol is back at the retailer, it re-enters inventory and the return is documented. Alcohol control regulators can inspect those records, so every unit has to be accounted for.
Your Refund and Any Restocking Fee
Most platforms refund the cost of the alcohol itself, but a few charge you for the failed trip. Uber Eats applies a $25 restocking fee when alcohol is returned to the store on your behalf; you get the product cost back, but the fee covers the driver’s return.5Uber Help. What happens if I am ineligible to receive alcohol at the time of my delivery? Instacart refunds the alcohol portion and doesn’t flag a separate restocking charge in its policy.2Instacart. Alcohol, OTC, and spray paint product policies
Check the app notification or your email for the refund amount. Processing typically takes a few business days. Restocking fees, where they apply, are generally non-refundable.
For disputes, contact the delivery platform’s support rather than the retailer. The platform processed your payment and controls the refund. Have your order number and any delivery notification messages ready; support can usually resolve these quickly once the records show the driver returned the product.
Can You Get the Driver to Come Back
No. Once the driver marks the delivery as undeliverable, the original order is closed. If you still want the alcohol, you have to place a new order from scratch. A fresh ID check has to happen on the new attempt, and the new order resets the delivery window, which matters if you’re close to your state’s cutoff for alcohol sales hours.
Why the Driver Had to Refuse
Knowing which trigger stopped your delivery is the fastest way to make sure the next attempt works.
No one answered the door. Alcohol delivery requires a real person on the receiving end. If you don’t respond within the platform’s wait window, the driver has to move on. Most apps give a short countdown before marking the delivery uncompletable.
The ID didn’t pass. Every delivery requires a valid, unexpired, government-issued photo ID showing the recipient is at least 21. An expired license, a name that doesn’t match the order, or a photo that doesn’t clearly match the person at the door all require the driver to refuse. UPS, for instance, mandates its Adult Signature Required service for all spirits shipments, so no one under 21 can sign under any circumstances.3UPS. How To Ship Spirits FedEx likewise requires an adult signature at the point of final delivery.4FedEx. How to ship alcohol: Regulations, Licenses and Services
The recipient appeared visibly intoxicated. Drivers must refuse the handoff in this situation. It isn’t a judgment call left to driver discretion; it’s a legal requirement in virtually every state. Trained signs include slurred speech, difficulty standing, strong alcohol odor, and glassy or bloodshot eyes.
The address is on a prohibited list. Even with perfect ID, some locations are simply off-limits for alcohol delivery. Platforms maintain explicit prohibited-location lists that generally include:
- Schools and college campuses, including K-12 schools, dormitories, fraternity or sorority houses, and other campus housing
- Correctional facilities, including prisons, reformatories, and veterans’ homes
- Package storage locations such as lockers, mailbox services, and storage unit facilities
- Other alcohol retailers, including liquor stores and bars
- Any location where the customer isn’t physically present to accept the delivery
Grubhub’s driver guidelines reflect this standard list and explicitly prohibit delivering to any location where the customer asks the driver to leave the alcohol unattended.6Grubhub. Are there locations in which I cannot deliver alcohol?
You refused the order. If you changed your mind at the door or the order was wrong, the driver takes the alcohol back the same way.
How to Keep the Next Delivery From Failing
A few steps handle most of what goes wrong:
- Be home and reachable. Track the order in the app and answer driver messages or calls. If the timer runs out, the order goes back.
- Check your ID’s expiration date before you order. An expired license will get the delivery refused even if you’re clearly over 21.
- Make sure the person on the order is the person at the door. A roommate or family member with their own ID usually won’t satisfy the check.
- Confirm your delivery address isn’t in a restricted zone. If you live on or near a college campus, verify your specific address is eligible before ordering.
- Check local delivery hours. Many states restrict alcohol sales to certain hours, and an order placed late at night may not be deliverable even if the app accepts it.
One last thing worth knowing: the strictness isn’t the driver being difficult. Delivering alcohol to a minor is a criminal offense in every state, retailers can lose their liquor license over a bad delivery, and drivers can be deactivated from a platform entirely. That’s why the ID check isn’t negotiable, and it’s why a failed delivery ends with the bottles going back to the store rather than sitting on your porch.
