Australia does not have a digital nomad visa. There is no dedicated category that lets a foreign national enter and work remotely for an overseas employer, so anyone planning to work from Australia has to fit that plan into an existing visa, almost always the Working Holiday visa (Subclass 417) or the Work and Holiday visa (Subclass 462). Both come with age limits, a cap on how long you can stay with one employer, and Australian tax obligations that apply the moment you open your laptop on Australian soil.
The Department of Home Affairs does not distinguish between working for an Australian employer and working remotely for a company overseas. If you are performing work while physically in Australia, immigration law treats it as work, regardless of where the money is coming from. That one rule rules out most visa categories.
Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417)
The 417 is the usual route for younger remote workers. It lets people aged 18 to 30 (up to 35 for passport holders from certain countries) stay for 12 months and work while they travel. The application charge is AUD 670.1Department of Home Affairs. Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417)
The catch for remote workers is visa condition 8547, which caps work with the same employer at six months.2Department of Home Affairs. Working Holiday Maker (WHM) Program – 6 Month Work Limitation The condition defines “employer” as the business or organisation you are directly working for, so the overseas company paying you counts. If you plan to work for one remote employer the whole year, you would breach this condition after six months unless a listed exemption applies.
Work and Holiday Visa (Subclass 462)
The 462 covers a different set of partner countries and generally applies to applicants aged 18 to 30. Passport holders from the United States, Argentina, and several Southeast Asian nations typically fall under this subclass rather than the 417. It usually requires a letter of government support from your home country, functional English proven through an approved test such as IELTS, or evidence of tertiary study. The 12-month stay and the six-month same-employer limit still apply.
A Visitor Visa Is Not a Workaround
A Subclass 600 Visitor visa does not let you work in Australia. The Department of Home Affairs is explicit that anyone working on a visitor stream is working illegally.3Department of Home Affairs. Work Restrictions Some business visitor streams allow limited activities like attending meetings or conferences, but writing code for your overseas employer from a Melbourne cafe does not qualify. Breaching work restrictions can lead to visa cancellation and future entry bans.4Department of Home Affairs. Cancelling a Visa
Staying Past 12 Months
A second-year Working Holiday visa is available if you complete three months of specified work, usually in agriculture, construction, or other designated regional industries. A third year requires six months of specified work during your second year.1Department of Home Affairs. Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417) Remote work does not count toward these requirements. To extend, you have to put the laptop down and do eligible hands-on work in eligible locations for the qualifying period.
What You Need to Apply
Beyond the age and passport requirements, expect to provide:
- Bank statements showing roughly AUD 5,000 for living expenses, plus enough for an onward flight.5Department of Home Affairs. First Working Holiday Visa
- A police certificate from any country you have lived in for 12 months or more in the past 10 years. For U.S. citizens, that means an FBI Identity History Summary with a federal apostille from the U.S. Department of State.
- Private health insurance meeting Department of Home Affairs standards. Citizens of the 11 countries with reciprocal healthcare agreements may have partial public cover, but that rarely replaces comprehensive private insurance.6Services Australia. About Reciprocal Health Care Agreements
- For the 462, English test results and educational transcripts showing tertiary study.
Gather everything before starting the online application. Missing documents mid-process can delay or invalidate the submission.
Applying Through ImmiAccount
All applications go through ImmiAccount, the Department of Home Affairs’ online portal.7Department of Home Affairs. Applying Online in ImmiAccount You create an account, select the subclass, fill in personal details, upload digitised supporting documents, and pay the charge in one session. Payment is by credit or debit card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, or Diners Club International); PayPal and bank transfers are not accepted.
After you submit, the Department may request biometrics at an Australian Biometrics Collection Centre operated by VFS Global.8Department of Home Affairs. Biometrics These centres do not exist in every country, so check whether you would need to travel to a neighbouring one. If you are already in Australia on a valid visa, a bridging visa may be granted to keep your status lawful while the application is processed.
Tax on Remote Work Done in Australia
Tax is where most digital nomads in Australia get caught out. The Australian Taxation Office does not care that your employer is in Berlin or San Francisco. If you are performing work while physically in the country, Australia taxes that income.
Working Holiday Maker Tax Rates
On a 417 or 462 visa, a special regime applies. Income is taxed at a flat 15% on the first AUD 45,000, then 30% up to AUD 135,000, 37% up to AUD 190,000, and 45% above that.9Australian Taxation Office. Schedule 15 – Tax Table for Working Holiday Makers There is no tax-free threshold. You are taxed from the first dollar.
Apply for a Tax File Number as soon as you can after arriving. Temporary visa holders with work rights can apply online through the ATO’s Individual Auto Registration system while physically in Australia.10Australian Taxation Office. Permanent Migrants and Temporary Visitors – TFN Application Without a TFN, payments to you must be withheld at 45%. You get it back through a tax return, but only after the financial year closes on June 30.
Foreign Resident Rates
Remote workers on other visa types who are classified as foreign residents for tax purposes pay a flat 30% on every dollar up to AUD 135,000, with no tax-free threshold.11Australian Taxation Office. Tax Rates – Foreign Resident That is double the WHM rate on the same income, which is one reason the Working Holiday pathway is financially preferable when you qualify.
Medicare Levy
Australian tax residents pay a 2% Medicare levy on top of income tax.12Australian Taxation Office. Tax Rates – Australian Resident Temporary visa holders who are not entitled to Medicare can apply for an exemption using form MS015 through Services Australia to get a Medicare Entitlement Statement.13Services Australia. Application for a Medicare Entitlement Statement Form (MS015) Applications open from July 1 for the previous financial year. Without the statement, the levy is assessed on your return by default.
Double Taxation
Australia has tax treaties with around 45 countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, Japan, and most of Western Europe.14Australian Taxation Office. Countries and Other Jurisdictions That Have a Tax Treaty With Australia Under the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997, you can claim a foreign income tax offset for tax paid to another country on income Australia also taxes.15Australasian Legal Information Institute. Income Tax Assessment Act 1997 – Sect 770.10 – Entitlement to Foreign Income Tax Offset Treaties differ in whether they allocate taxing rights to one country or allow credits, so check your home country’s specific agreement.
Superannuation and the 65% Withdrawal Tax
If you work for an Australian employer, even briefly, that employer must contribute to a superannuation fund on your behalf at 12% of your ordinary earnings.16Australian Taxation Office. Super Guarantee This includes backpackers on Working Holiday visas.17Australian Taxation Office. Super From Your Employer If you are temporarily working for an overseas employer and are covered by a bilateral social security agreement between Australia and your home country, super may not be required.
You can claim your super back after leaving through a Departing Australia Superannuation Payment, provided you accumulated super on a temporary visa, your visa is no longer active, you have left the country, and you are not an Australian or New Zealand citizen or permanent resident.18Australian Taxation Office. Departing Australia Superannuation Payment (DASP) The taxed component of a DASP for Working Holiday Maker visa holders is taxed at 65%. On AUD 3,000 of accumulated super, you would net about AUD 1,050. If you do not claim, the fund transfers the balance to the ATO as unclaimed money after six months.
Freelancers: ABN and GST
If you invoice clients directly (including overseas ones) while physically in Australia, you may need an Australian Business Number. An ABN lets you issue tax invoices and prevents clients from being required to withhold tax at the top rate.
Once your annual turnover from taxable sales reaches AUD 75,000, you must register for Goods and Services Tax within 21 days.19Australian Taxation Office. Registering for GST The threshold uses both current turnover (past 12 months) and projected turnover (next 12 months). Services exported to overseas clients may be GST-free, but the registration obligation still kicks in at the threshold.
Health Insurance
Australia has reciprocal healthcare agreements with 11 countries: Belgium, Finland, Ireland, Italy, Malta, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Slovenia, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.6Services Australia. About Reciprocal Health Care Agreements Citizens of those countries can access some medically necessary treatment through the public system. Cover is limited and does not typically include dental, optical, ambulance transport, or private hospital care.
Everyone else needs private health insurance meeting Department of Home Affairs standards. Even citizens of reciprocal agreement countries should consider supplemental cover, because a single ambulance ride in some Australian states can cost more than AUD 1,000 out of pocket. Confirm what your policy covers before you arrive.
