Commonwealth citizens have the right to work in the UK only if they hold the right of abode or a valid UK visa that permits work. The shared history of the Commonwealth does not create a shared labour market, and modern immigration law treats most Commonwealth nationals the same as other foreign workers. Which visa you need depends on your job offer, your age, your qualifications, or in some cases a British-born grandparent.
The One Group That Does Not Need a Visa
A narrow band of Commonwealth citizens hold the right of abode, which lets them live and work in the UK without any immigration control.1GOV.UK. Prove You Have Right of Abode in the UK You qualify only if one of your parents was born in the UK and was a citizen of the United Kingdom and Colonies at the time of your birth, and you were a Commonwealth citizen on 31 December 1982 with unbroken Commonwealth citizenship since.2GOV.UK. Prove You Have Right of Abode in the UK – Commonwealth Citizens
Female Commonwealth citizens who married someone with the right of abode before 1 January 1983 may also qualify, provided their Commonwealth citizenship has been continuous since the end of 1982.2GOV.UK. Prove You Have Right of Abode in the UK – Commonwealth Citizens If this describes you, apply for a certificate of entitlement, which is placed in your passport. Everyone else needs a visa.
Skilled Worker Visa
This is the main employer-sponsored route. Your UK employer must hold a Home Office sponsor licence and issue you a Certificate of Sponsorship, an electronic record with a unique reference number and details of the role, which you have to use within three months.3GOV.UK. UK Visa Sponsorship for Employers – Certificates of Sponsorship
The standard minimum salary is £41,700 per year or the going rate for your specific occupation, whichever is higher.4GOV.UK. Skilled Worker Visa – Your Job Lower thresholds apply to jobs on the Immigration Salary List, where the minimum drops to 80 percent of the usual rate.5GOV.UK. Skilled Worker Visa – Immigration Salary List That list covers occupations across biological science, construction trades, care work, and some arts roles. Healthcare and education jobs tied to national pay scales follow their own rules.6GOV.UK. Skilled Worker Visa – When You Can Be Paid Less
You will also need to prove English at level B2 on the Common European Framework, either by test, a UK degree, or a degree taught in English abroad.7GOV.UK. Skilled Worker Visa – Knowledge of English Citizens of majority-English-speaking Commonwealth countries such as Australia, Canada, and New Zealand are typically exempt because their degrees qualify automatically.
Health and Care Worker Visa
If your job is with the NHS, an NHS supplier, or in adult social care, the Health and Care Worker visa gives you a better deal than the standard Skilled Worker route.8GOV.UK. Health and Care Worker Visa It is a sub-category of the Skilled Worker visa but comes with lower fees and a full exemption from the Immigration Health Surcharge for you and your dependants.
The general salary threshold is £31,300 per year or the going rate for your occupation, whichever is higher.9GOV.UK. Health and Care Worker Visa – If You Will Need to Meet Different Salary Requirements Jobs on national pay scales follow their own scales.
UK Ancestry Visa
The Ancestry visa is a Commonwealth-only route, and often the most useful one for people with British family roots. If you are a Commonwealth citizen with a grandparent born in the UK, the Channel Islands, or the Isle of Man, you can apply without needing an employer or a job offer in advance.10GOV.UK. UK Ancestry Visa You must be at least 17, show you can and plan to work, and demonstrate enough money to support yourself without public funds.11GOV.UK. UK Ancestry Visa – Eligibility
The visa lasts five years, and you can work in any job during that time.10GOV.UK. UK Ancestry Visa After five years of qualifying residence, you can apply for settlement. It is a popular route for Australians, New Zealanders, Canadians, and South Africans with a British-born grandparent.
Youth Mobility Scheme
Young people from certain countries can live and work in the UK for up to two years with no job offer and no sponsor.12GOV.UK. Youth Mobility Scheme Visa Among Commonwealth nations, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand participate. Their citizens can apply between 18 and 35 and extend for a third year after the initial two.13GOV.UK. Youth Mobility Scheme Visa – Eligibility Applicants from most other participating countries must be aged 18 to 30 and get a straight two-year visa.
You can only use this route once. It does not lead directly to settlement, and time on it does not count toward permanent residency.
India Young Professionals Scheme
Indian citizens aged 18 to 30 with at least a bachelor’s degree have their own route, separate from the Youth Mobility Scheme. You must first be selected in a ballot before you can apply.14GOV.UK. India Young Professionals Scheme Visa – Eligibility If selected, you need at least £2,530 in savings held for 28 consecutive days, and you cannot have children under 18 living with you or financially dependent on you.
The visa allows two years of work in the UK. You cannot use it if you have previously held this visa or a Youth Mobility Scheme visa.
Graduate Visa
If you finish a UK degree on a Student visa, you can switch to the Graduate visa and work without restriction for two years after a bachelor’s or master’s, or three years after a doctorate. No job offer or sponsorship is needed. It bridges the gap between graduation and finding an employer willing to sponsor a Skilled Worker visa. The Graduate visa does not lead directly to settlement, but the time can be used to build a career and secure sponsorship for a longer-term route.
What It Costs
Fees vary by route and length. As of 8 April 2026, a Skilled Worker visa costs £819 per person for a stay of three years or less, or £1,618 for longer stays. Health and Care Worker fees are £324 and £628 for the same periods. The Youth Mobility Scheme and India Young Professionals Scheme each cost £340.15GOV.UK. Most applicants also pay the Immigration Health Surcharge, which gives you access to NHS services for the duration of your visa. The standard rate is £1,035 per year, paid upfront for the entire visa period.16GOV.UK. Pay for UK Healthcare as Part of Your Immigration Application Youth Mobility Scheme applicants and anyone under 18 pay a reduced £776 per year. Health and Care Worker visa holders are fully exempt.
The numbers add up. A three-year Skilled Worker visa for a single applicant runs to roughly £3,900 in fees and surcharge before flights or relocation costs.
Bringing Your Family
Most work visa holders can bring a spouse, civil partner, unmarried partner, and children under 18. Partners must be in a marriage or civil partnership recognised in the UK, or have lived together in a relationship for at least two years.17GOV.UK. Skilled Worker Visa – Your Partner and Children Children must live with you unless they are away at school or university and cannot be married or in a civil partnership. Each dependant pays their own visa fee and Immigration Health Surcharge.
Two restrictions catch people out. Care workers and senior care workers generally cannot bring dependants unless they held a visa in that role continuously since before 11 March 2024, or the application is for a child born in the UK.18GOV.UK. Health and Care Worker Visa – Your Partner and Children A similar block applies to Skilled Worker visa holders in “medium skilled” jobs, where dependants are not allowed unless the worker held a Skilled Worker visa in such a role continuously since before 22 July 2025. Check your occupation code before assuming your family can join you.
Public Funds and NHS Access
Work visas carry a “no recourse to public funds” condition. You cannot claim most welfare benefits, social housing, or homelessness assistance.19GOV.UK. Public Funds This applies across virtually every work route, including the Skilled Worker, Health and Care Worker, and UK Ancestry visas.
Contributory benefits are different. If you pay National Insurance through employment, you can access Statutory Sick Pay, Statutory Maternity Pay, and the State Pension. Those do not count as public funds for immigration purposes.19GOV.UK. Public Funds Claiming restricted benefits when you are not entitled to them can get your visa cancelled.
If you paid the Immigration Health Surcharge, you can use the NHS on the same basis as a UK resident from the day your visa starts. You still pay for prescriptions, dental treatment, and eye tests like everyone else in England.
Which Routes Lead to Staying Permanently
After five years of continuous residence on a qualifying work visa, you can apply for indefinite leave to remain, the UK equivalent of permanent residency.20GOV.UK. Indefinite Leave to Remain if You Have a Skilled Worker, Health and Care Worker, T2 or Tier 2 Visa The Skilled Worker visa, Health and Care Worker visa, and UK Ancestry visa all lead to settlement. The Youth Mobility Scheme and India Young Professionals Scheme do not.
During the five-year qualifying period, you must not spend more than 180 days outside the UK in any 12-month period.21GOV.UK. Indefinite Leave to Remain if You Have a Skilled Worker, Health and Care Worker, T2 or Tier 2 Visa – Time UK You also need to pass the Life in the UK test, a 24-question multiple-choice exam about British history, government, and customs. Applicants aged 65 or over are exempt.22GOV.UK. Prove Your Knowledge of English for Citizenship and Settling You can apply for settlement up to 28 days before completing your five years.
Once you have indefinite leave to remain, the work and public funds restrictions fall away. You can take any job, claim benefits, and stay without a time limit. After holding settlement for 12 months, you become eligible to apply for British citizenship.
