If you hold a passport from the United States, Canada, the European Union, or most Latin American countries, you do not need a visa to visit El Salvador. You’ll buy a $12 Tourist Card from immigration officers when you arrive, and that card authorizes a stay of up to 90 days (sometimes 180, depending on your passport and stated purpose).1U.S. Embassy in El Salvador. Travel Requirements Travelers whose nationality isn’t on the exemption list must apply for a visa at a Salvadoran consulate before departure.
What Visa-Free Travelers Get at the Border
The Tourist Card (Tarjeta de Turista) is sold at any international port of entry for $12.00 USD. It is valid for 90 or 180 days depending on your passport’s validity and your reason for travel.1U.S. Embassy in El Salvador. Travel Requirements
Passport rules are less demanding than many travelers assume. For U.S. citizens, El Salvador requires only that the passport be valid at the moment of entry, with no set minimum validity beyond that.2U.S. Department of State. Your 90 Days Cover Four Countries, Not One
El Salvador belongs to the Central America-4 (CA-4) Border Control Agreement along with Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.4Organization of American States. Visas for Foreign Nationals One entry stamp covers the whole region, and your authorized time runs continuously as you move between the four countries. Crossings between them are treated as internal travel, so you won’t get a fresh stamp or a reset clock.
The practical consequence catches travelers off guard: the standard 90 days applies across the entire CA-4 region, not to each country separately. Sixty days in Honduras leaves you 30 for El Salvador and everywhere else in the bloc. An expulsion from any one CA-4 country bars you from all four.
When You Do Need a Visa
If your nationality is not exempt, you apply through a Salvadoran consulate or embassy before you travel. El Salvador uses two visa tracks, and your country of origin determines which one you get.
Consular Visa
The Consular Visa is issued directly by the diplomatic mission and applies to applicants from countries considered lower-risk. Processing usually takes about 48 hours, and the fee is $30 USD.3Free Trade Area of the Americas. Consulted Visa
The Consulted Visa applies to applicants from countries that trigger additional review. The consulate sends your application to the Directorate General of Migration and Foreigners (DGME) in El Salvador for authorization before issuing anything. Processing typically runs about 14 days and can take longer.3Free Trade Area of the Americas. Business Facilitation Measures – Visa Requirements for Business Travelers in the Americas: El Salvador
Documents You’ll Submit
Both tracks call for the same core package:3Free Trade Area of the Americas. Business Facilitation Measures – Visa Requirements for Business Travelers in the Americas: El Salvador
- A valid passport with at least six months of remaining validity recommended, plus a photocopy
- A completed application form
- One passport-sized photograph
- A certificate of good conduct (police clearance) from your home country
- A letter of invitation from a contact in El Salvador
- Proof of financial solvency, such as bank statements and commercial references
- Copies of visas you hold for other countries
- A return ticket, which may be required in some cases
Incomplete applications are the most common cause of delay, so submit the full package with enough lead time for the Consulted Visa track if it applies to you.
Health and Customs Rules at Entry
El Salvador requires a yellow fever vaccination certificate for travelers aged one and older arriving from countries where yellow fever transmission is a risk, including anyone who has spent more than 12 hours in transit or layover in a risk country, even without leaving the airport.5Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Extending Your Stay
If you want to stay longer than your initial authorization, you can apply through the DGME for an extension of up to 90 additional days. The extension is available only once per entry into the country or the CA-4 region.6Dirección General de Migración y Extranjería. Form F-44 – Prórroga de Permanencia de No Residente de 1 Hasta 90 Días
File the request at least five business days before your current authorization expires. Don’t wait until the last day. The application uses Form F-44, and you’ll submit it with your original passport and photocopies of all used pages. CA-4 citizens who entered on a national ID card should bring that instead.7Dirección General de Migración y Extranjería. Form F-44 – Prórroga de Permanencia de No Residente de 1 Hasta 90 Días Approval is discretionary, you’ll need to show a reasonable purpose for staying, and a fee is charged on approval. Because you only get one extension, trying to reset the clock by exiting and re-entering is a route immigration officers view with growing skepticism.
Traveling With Children
One rule surprises many families. A U.S. citizen minor who has been in El Salvador for more than a year is treated as a resident, and after that point the child needs written consent from every parent listed on the birth certificate who isn’t traveling with them in order to leave the country. The consent must be notarized by a Salvadoran notary specifically; the U.S. Embassy cannot notarize it. The process takes time, so plan ahead if a child’s stay might approach that one-year mark.2U.S. Department of State. El Salvador International Travel Information
