Pure CBD does not show up on a hair follicle drug test. Standard panels look for THC and its metabolites, not cannabidiol. The practical problem is that most commercial CBD products contain trace THC, and with regular use those small amounts can build up in hair and push a sample over the cutoff. The screening threshold for marijuana metabolite in hair is 1.0 pg/mg, and the confirmatory cutoff drops to 0.1 pg/mg, so the margin is narrow.1Quest Diagnostics. What the Test Actually Screens For
The standard hair panel screens five drug classes: marijuana metabolite (THC-COOH, the carboxylic acid metabolite of THC), amphetamines, cocaine, opiates, and PCP.2Quest Diagnostics. Hair Drug Testing Frequently Asked Questions CBD is not on that list, and no standard workplace or legal drug test looks for it.3Labcorp. Hair Follicle Drug Testing Process and Benefits
Hair testing uses a two-stage process. An immunoassay screen flags any sample above the 1.0 pg/mg threshold for marijuana metabolite. Flagged samples then go through gas chromatography-mass spectrometry or liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, and the confirmatory cutoff for marijuana metabolite is 0.1 pg/mg. A result is only reported positive if it clears both stages.1Quest Diagnostics. Hair Testing Certifications and Cutoff Levels
The detection window matters. A standard sample is 1.5 inches of head hair, and since head hair grows about half an inch per month, the sample covers roughly 90 days.3Labcorp. Hair Follicle Drug Testing Process and Benefits That is a much longer window than urine or oral fluid testing, so use from months ago can still register.
Why CBD Products Carry a THC Risk
Federal law defines hemp as cannabis containing no more than 0.3% delta-9 THC on a dry weight basis.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 7 USC 1639o – Definitions The 2018 Farm Bill removed hemp from the Controlled Substances Act, making hemp-derived CBD legal at the federal level.5Food and Drug Administration. Hemp Production and the 2018 Farm Bill CBD itself is not a controlled substance. The 0.3% ceiling still allows a real amount of THC in a product you take every day.
CBD products fall into three categories, and the difference is what determines your risk:
- Full-spectrum CBD contains all the naturally occurring hemp compounds, including THC up to the 0.3% limit. This is the highest-risk category for drug testing.
- Broad-spectrum CBD has had most THC removed during processing but keeps other cannabinoids. Lower risk than full-spectrum, though not zero.
- CBD isolate is purified to contain only CBD. Lowest risk on paper.
The Mislabeling Problem
Product labels are not a reliable guarantee of contents. One analysis of products marketed as “THC-free” found that 24% of them contained detectable delta-9 THC, including some isolate products.6PubMed Central. Cannabidiol (CBD) Product Contamination: Quantitative Analysis of Delta-9-THC An FDA survey of retail CBD products found several products exceeding the 0.3% THC limit, including one product that was almost entirely THC with barely any CBD.7Food and Drug Administration. Content vs Label Claim – A Survey of CBD Content in Commercially Available Products “THC-free” on a label does not always mean zero THC in the bottle.
What Pushes a CBD User Over the Line
A single dose of a legal full-spectrum product usually contains a negligible amount of THC. Daily use is different. THC is fat-soluble, so it binds to fat and lingers, and repeated exposure means small amounts get deposited in the hair shaft over weeks and months. With the confirmatory cutoff at 0.1 pg/mg, it does not take much accumulated THC to trigger a positive.
Individual factors influence how much ends up in your hair. Dosage, frequency, body composition, and the actual THC content of your specific product all matter, and none of them are predictable enough to give a safe threshold.
Secondhand smoke is another route. Research published in Forensic Science International in 2025 found that non-users who sat in a car for 15 minutes while a cannabis cigarette burned later had hair that tested positive for THC at levels consistent with actual drug use, while their urine tests came back negative. Men in the study showed higher THC concentrations than women. The researchers noted that hair results from passive exposure can be indistinguishable from actual use.8ScienceDirect. DOT and Safety-Sensitive Jobs
If you work in a safety-sensitive transportation role, the rules leave no room. Department of Transportation drug testing under 49 CFR Part 40 covers marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, PCP, and opioids.9eCFR. 49 CFR Part 40 – Procedures for Transportation Workplace Drug Testing The DOT has issued a specific notice on CBD: using a CBD product is not a legitimate medical explanation for a positive marijuana result, and Medical Review Officers will verify the positive regardless of what the employee says they took.10U.S. Department of Transportation. DOT CBD Notice
That rule covers pilots, truck and bus drivers, train engineers, subway operators, ship captains, aircraft maintenance personnel, and pipeline emergency response workers, among others. A verified positive typically means immediate removal from safety-sensitive duties.
What Happens If You Test Positive
A positive result does not go straight to your employer. Every federally regulated positive goes to a Medical Review Officer, a licensed physician trained in drug test interpretation, who contacts you and asks whether you have a medical explanation such as a valid prescription.11U.S. Department of Transportation. Back to Basics for Medical Review Officers
“I only used CBD” is not an accepted explanation. The MRO will verify the positive. Your remaining option is to request split specimen testing. When your sample was collected, part of it was sealed as a backup, and you have the right to send that portion to a separate certified laboratory for independent confirmation. The MRO must process the request immediately and cannot delay it over a payment dispute.11U.S. Department of Transportation. Back to Basics for Medical Review Officers
Private employers outside the DOT framework vary. Some follow similar MRO procedures voluntarily. Others handle disputes through their own written policy. If you face a positive you believe is wrong, ask about the employer’s specific review process and your right to a retest.
How to Lower Your Risk
- Choose CBD isolate over full-spectrum. It carries the lowest THC risk, though even some “THC-free” isolate products have tested positive for trace THC.
- Look for a certificate of analysis from an independent lab showing actual cannabinoid content. If the manufacturer will not provide one, treat that as a warning.
- Keep dosage and frequency modest. Higher doses and daily use deposit more THC into hair over time.
- Avoid enclosed spaces where others are smoking cannabis. Brief passive exposure can produce hair results indistinguishable from actual use.
- If a test is coming and the stakes are high, stop all CBD products at least 90 days beforehand. With hair growing about half an inch per month and the standard sample covering 1.5 inches, that is roughly how long clean hair takes to grow into the tested segment.
No label is trustworthy enough to bet a job or a legal outcome on. If the test matters, the safe answer is to be off CBD long enough for the tested hair to have grown in clean.
