Goodman’s standard factory warranty does not cover labor. If a covered part fails, Goodman ships a free replacement part to your contractor, but the cost of the technician’s time to diagnose the problem, remove the old part, and install the new one is yours to pay. The warranty certificates say this plainly: “Goodman will not pay for labor, freight, or any other cost associated with the service, repair, or operation of the unit.”1HVAC Direct. Goodman GSZ14 Warranty Certificate This is standard across the HVAC industry: Carrier, Trane, Lennox, and Rheem all structure their base warranties the same way.2Freezing Mechanical. HVAC Systems With the Best Warranties If you want labor covered, you have to buy that coverage separately.
What the Base Warranty Does Pay For
Goodman warrants parts of its heating and air conditioning equipment against defects in materials and workmanship under normal use and maintenance. When a part fails for a covered reason, Goodman provides a replacement part at no charge. The warranty describes that replacement part as Goodman’s “only responsibility” and the homeowner’s “exclusive remedy.”3HVAC Direct. Goodman GSZ14 Warranty Certificate
How long that parts coverage runs depends on whether the unit is registered online within 60 days of installation. Unregistered units get a 5-year parts limited warranty. Registered units get 10 years.4Goodman Manufacturing. The Air Conditioner Limited Warranty Residents of California, Florida, Georgia, and Quebec receive the full 10-year coverage without registering, because state or provincial law prohibits conditioning warranty rights on product registration.5Goodman Manufacturing. Warranty Information
Certain high-value components carry longer parts coverage. Select higher-efficiency air conditioners and heat pumps come with a lifetime compressor limited warranty for the original, registered homeowner; if the compressor fails, Goodman will replace the entire unit with a comparable model. Furnace heat exchangers carry a lifetime term, listed as 99 years, for the original registered owner, and select gas furnaces include a 10-year unit replacement limited warranty.6Goodman Manufacturing. Why Goodman None of this changes the labor rule. A lifetime compressor warranty means a free compressor, not a free compressor installation.
How To Get Labor Covered
Three routes exist, and they’re not mutually exclusive.
Goodman’s Asure Extended Service Plan
Goodman sells an add-on called the Asure Extended Service Agreement that can cover labor, parts, or both. It must be purchased through an Authorized Asure Dealer, and the contract must be registered with Goodman within six months of installation.7Goodman Manufacturing. Asure Extended Service Dealer Information Guide The main configurations are:
- Labor (L): covers labor to repair or replace parts that fail from a manufacturing defect. Non-transferable to a new homeowner.
- Parts and Labor (PL): covers both replacement parts and labor for covered failures. Fully transferable.
- Compressor (C): provides a new equivalent compressor. Non-transferable.
- Limited Unit Replacement (LUR): provides a new equivalent unit if the compressor or heat exchanger fails. Non-transferable.8Goodman Manufacturing. Asure Extended Service Plan Guide
Plan terms of 5 years, 10 years, and up to 99 years (compressor only) are available. Goodman does not publish fixed prices; the dealer sets the consumer price, which Goodman describes as “pennies a day.”9Goodman Manufacturing. Extended Service Agreement Repairs must be performed by an authorized dealer using Goodman-specified parts.7Goodman Manufacturing. Asure Extended Service Dealer Information Guide
If you expect to sell the home, the transferability distinction matters. A Labor-only plan ends at the sale. A Parts and Labor plan transfers to the new owner for a $75 fee per contract.7Goodman Manufacturing. Asure Extended Service Dealer Information Guide Asure is not available in all states, so confirm with your dealer.
Contractor Labor Warranties
Many HVAC contractors throw in a one- or two-year labor warranty on their installations, separate from anything Goodman provides. Some sell extended labor warranties at installation for roughly $200 to $500.10Furnace Direct. Goodman Furnace Warranty Guide These are the contractor’s own commitments, not Goodman programs, so the terms and reliability depend on the installing company. Get the labor warranty in writing before installation starts.
Third-Party Home Warranty Plans
Companies such as American Home Shield sell home warranty plans that cover both parts and labor for HVAC systems. AHS covers permanently installed air conditioning systems up to 5-ton capacity, with a covered-item limit of $5,000 per system per agreement year.11American Home Shield. Air Conditioners Coverage These plans usually involve a service-call fee per visit. They’re worth a look if your Goodman equipment is past its factory parts term, or if you want labor protection without committing to Asure.
Other Exclusions Worth Knowing
Labor is the most-asked exclusion, but the certificate lists several others that catch homeowners by surprise:
- Faulty installation. Failures caused by improper installation are not covered.12HVAC Direct. Goodman GSZ14 Warranty Certificate
- Lack of maintenance. Skipping filter changes, coil cleaning, or lubrication voids coverage for the resulting damage.13Goodman Manufacturing. Goodman Warranty Terms
- Incompatible or unauthorized parts and refrigerants.13Goodman Manufacturing. Goodman Warranty Terms
- Environmental events: floods, fires, wind, lightning, and corrosive atmospheres.
- Electrical issues: failures from power outages or inadequate electrical service, plus the cost of fuses and breaker resets.
- Internet or phone purchases, unless the selling dealer is also the installing contractor and follows applicable codes and licensing.14ECMDI/Gemaire. Goodman GSH13 Warranty Certificate
- Relocated units. Moving the unit from its original installation site voids the warranty.
- Operational costs such as electricity, fuel, lodging, and transportation.
Registration, Claims, and Transfers
Registration happens at goodmanmfg.com within 60 days of installation. Either the homeowner or the installing dealer can complete it using the unit’s model number, serial number, and installation date. Miss the deadline and the warranty defaults to five years on parts; the Goodman site does not describe a late-registration option.4Goodman Manufacturing. The Air Conditioner Limited Warranty The furnace heat exchanger does keep a 20-year term even without registration, compared to the lifetime term for registered units.15HVAC Direct. Goodman Furnace Warranty
When a part fails, contact the dealer who installed the equipment. The dealer handles verification, documentation, return authorization if needed, and ordering the replacement through Goodman’s system.16Goodman Manufacturing. Support If you can’t reach the original installer, Goodman’s homeowner support team can help.
On transfer at sale: in most states the standard limited warranty is tied to the original owner and does not follow the home. Florida (units installed on or after July 1, 2023), Texas (on or after September 1, 2021), and Georgia (on or after January 1, 2026) require by law that existing warranty coverage transfer when the property is sold.5Goodman Manufacturing. Warranty Information Even where the parts warranty transfers, labor coverage still depends on whether you bought an Asure Parts and Labor plan or a separate contractor or third-party plan that allows transfer.
