Yes, Hyundai’s factory warranty does cover the battery, but the terms depend on which battery you mean. The conventional 12-volt battery in a gas Hyundai is covered for 3 years or 36,000 miles. The high-voltage battery pack in a Hyundai hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or electric vehicle is covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles, with a guarantee that it will hold at least 70 percent of its original capacity through that period.1Hyundai USA. 2026 Model Year Owner’s Handbook and Warranty Information2Hyundai. Warranty Overview
The 12-Volt Battery
Every new Hyundai ships with a conventional 12-volt battery for accessories, lights, and the starter. On model year 2016 and newer vehicles, that battery carries a flat 3-year/36,000-mile warranty against defects in materials or workmanship. No proration. Whichever comes first ends the coverage.1Hyundai USA. 2026 Model Year Owner’s Handbook and Warranty Information
Older cars had different terms. On 2015 and earlier model years, the 12-volt battery was covered for 3 years with unlimited miles, but it was prorated: Hyundai paid the full cost for the first two years, then covered 75 percent of the battery cost in year three while still paying all the labor.3Hyundai USA. America’s Best Warranty
One point trips people up. The 12-volt battery is classified as a wear item, so it sits outside the 5-year/60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty that covers most other components. A dead 12-volt after 36,000 miles is on you, even if the rest of the car is still under warranty.3Hyundai USA. America’s Best Warranty
The High-Voltage Battery in EVs and Hybrids
The battery that actually moves an Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, Kona Electric, or a Sonata or Tucson hybrid is covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. The same 10-year/100,000-mile period also covers the hybrid starter/generator, the hybrid power control unit, and the automatic transmission including the traction motor.2Hyundai. Warranty Overview
The part of this coverage that matters most is the capacity floor. Hyundai warrants that the high-voltage battery will retain at least 70 percent of its original capacity throughout the 10-year/100,000-mile window.3Hyundai USA. America’s Best Warranty If it drops below that, the warranty applies even though the pack still works. An out-of-warranty replacement on a Hyundai EV runs roughly $10,000 to $15,000 depending on the model, which is why that threshold has real financial weight.4ev.com. Transfer to Later Owners
The high-voltage battery warranty transfers in full. A second or third owner of a Hyundai EV or hybrid gets the same 10-year/100,000-mile coverage on the pack and its related components as the original buyer. That’s different from the powertrain warranty on non-electrified Hyundais, where the original owner’s 10 years/100,000 miles drops to 5 years/60,000 miles for a subsequent owner.3Hyundai USA. America’s Best Warranty If you’re shopping a used Hyundai EV, the battery warranty likely has years left on it.
What Can Void Battery Coverage
Hyundai’s warranty handbook lists conditions that can lead to a denied claim on any covered component, batteries included:
- Failing to follow the maintenance schedule in the owner’s manual, or using fluids, fuels, or lubricants other than those Hyundai specifies.5Hyundai USA. 2023 Model Year Owner’s Handbook and Warranty Information
- Alterations, tampering, or non-Hyundai genuine parts on the affected component.5Hyundai USA. 2023 Model Year Owner’s Handbook and Warranty Information
- Racing, flooding, accidents, vandalism, or other abuse.5Hyundai USA. 2023 Model Year Owner’s Handbook and Warranty Information
- Acts of God, including hail, flooding, salt damage, and acid rain.
- Odometer tampering.
- A salvage or rebuilt title.5Hyundai USA. 2023 Model Year Owner’s Handbook and Warranty Information
Commercial use is another exclusion. Taxis, rental cars, and delivery vehicles are not covered under the powertrain or hybrid battery warranty.3Hyundai USA. America’s Best Warranty
Keep your service records. The handbook says you should retain receipts for all completed service, because a gap in required maintenance can be used to deny a claim on parts affected by that gap.5Hyundai USA. 2023 Model Year Owner’s Handbook and Warranty Information
How to File a Battery Warranty Claim
Warranty work has to go through an authorized Hyundai dealer. Independent shops cannot perform it. Bring your VIN, current mileage, your maintenance records, and a description of the problem.5Hyundai USA. 2023 Model Year Owner’s Handbook and Warranty Information
The dealer is entitled to a reasonable amount of time and a reasonable number of attempts to diagnose the defect. If it’s confirmed as a warranty issue, repair or replacement is at no charge for parts or labor. If the car can’t be driven because of a warrantable defect, towing to the nearest authorized dealer is covered through Hyundai Roadside Assistance at 1-800-243-7766.5Hyundai USA. 2023 Model Year Owner’s Handbook and Warranty Information

If You Bought a Sonata Hybrid Between 2012 and 2016
Owners of certain older Sonata Hybrids may have a different, stronger promise. In January 2012, Hyundai announced a Lifetime Hybrid Battery Replacement Guarantee for the 2012 Sonata Hybrid, agreeing to replace the lithium polymer battery free of charge for the life of the vehicle in place of the standard 10-year/100,000-mile coverage.6PR Newswire. Extra Protections in California and CARB States
If you live in California or a state that follows California emissions rules, state law adds a layer of protection. Under 13 CCR § 1962.8, manufacturers of battery electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles certified for model year 2026 and later must warrant the battery against defects that cause its state of health to fall below 70 percent for at least 8 years or 100,000 miles. For 2031 and later model years, that floor rises to 75 percent.10Cornell Law Institute. 13 CCR 1962.811California Air Resources Board. ACC II Final Regulation Order, Appendix A-9
Hyundai’s 10-year/100,000-mile warranty already exceeds the state’s 8-year minimum for 2026 through 2030 model years at the same 70 percent capacity floor. The 2031 rule could matter more, because its 75 percent floor is higher than the 70 percent Hyundai currently promises.11California Air Resources Board. ACC II Final Regulation Order, Appendix A-9
There’s one more thing to know if you’re in a CARB state. The regulation prohibits manufacturers from denying a battery warranty claim solely because the owner can’t produce maintenance receipts. A claim can still be denied if the manufacturer shows that abuse, neglect, or improper maintenance directly caused the failure, but a missing paper trail alone isn’t enough.10Cornell Law Institute. 13 CCR 1962.8
Recalls Are a Separate Track
A recall is not a warranty claim, and its terms are better. The most prominent Hyundai battery recall involved certain 2019 and 2020 Kona Electric models, where cells manufactured by LG Energy Solution at a plant in Nanjing, China, were found to carry a defect that could cause an internal short and fire risk. Hyundai recalled about 82,000 vehicles globally, with 4,694 in the United States, and offered full battery pack replacements at no charge.12Green Car Reports. Hyundai Kona Battery Recall U.S. Details and Timeline for Full Pack Replacement While replacement packs were being produced, dealers could install a battery management software update as an interim measure, and Hyundai advised affected owners to limit charging to 80 percent, park outdoors, and charge away from structures.13NHTSA. Recall 21V-127 Remedy Instructions
Recall repairs are performed at no cost regardless of the vehicle’s warranty status or its mileage. If your VIN is included in a recall, that coverage stands whether or not the standard battery warranty has expired.
