Leukemia can qualify you for Social Security disability benefits, and some aggressive forms are approved on a fast track. To receive SSDI or SSI, your diagnosis and its effects must keep you from earning more than $1,690 a month in 2026, the level the Social Security Administration treats as substantial gainful activity.1Social Security Administration. Substantial Gainful Activity The condition must have lasted, or be expected to last, at least 12 months, or be expected to result in death.2Social Security Administration. 20 CFR 404.1505 – Basic Definition of Disability
How the SSA Evaluates Leukemia
Leukemia is reviewed under the SSA’s Listing of Impairments, called the Blue Book. It appears at Listing 13.06 within the cancer section. If your case meets the listing’s criteria, you are approved on the medical evidence alone.3Social Security Administration. 13.00 Cancer – Adult
What the listing requires depends on the type of leukemia:
- Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) qualify under Listing 13.06A. For acute leukemia, the SSA generally treats the diagnosis itself, confirmed by bone marrow testing, as enough.4Social Security Administration. SSA POMS DI 23022.085 – Acute Leukemia
- Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) qualifies once it has progressed to the accelerated or blast phase.
- Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) qualifies when it produces specific complications such as severe anemia, recurrent infections, or other functional limitations documented in your records.
Compassionate Allowances
Two forms of leukemia are on the SSA’s Compassionate Allowances list, which fast-tracks decisions: acute leukemia and CML in blast phase.5Social Security Administration. Compassionate Allowances Conditions The SSA has already determined these conditions meet the disability standard, so flagged claims are decided far faster than the usual timeline.
If Your Leukemia Doesn’t Meet the Listing
You can still qualify. When the Blue Book criteria aren’t met, the SSA evaluates your residual functional capacity (RFC) — what you can still do, on a regular and continuing basis, eight hours a day and five days a week.6Social Security Administration. DI 24510.006 – Assessing Residual Functional Capacity (RFC) in Initial Claims (SSR 96-8p) Treatment effects matter here as much as the disease itself: chemotherapy-related fatigue, cognitive difficulties sometimes called “chemo brain,” neuropathy, frequent infections, and recurring hospitalizations all reduce functional capacity. The assessment covers both physical and mental limitations.7Social Security Administration. 20 CFR 416.945 – Your Residual Functional Capacity If the SSA concludes you can’t do your past work and can’t adjust to other work given your age, education, and experience, you’re approved.
SSDI, SSI, or Both
The medical rules are the same across the two programs, but the non-medical eligibility rules differ.8Social Security Administration. Overview of Our Disability Programs
SSDI is tied to your work history. You must have earned enough Social Security work credits, and the number depends on your age when the disability began. Under age 24, as few as six credits from the prior three years may be enough. From age 31 up, you generally need at least 20 credits earned in the 10 years before you became disabled.9Social Security Administration. Social Security Credits and Benefit Eligibility
SSI is needs-based and does not require a work history. In 2026, countable resources cannot exceed $2,000 for an individual or $3,000 for a couple.10Social Security Administration. 2026 Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) Fact Sheet Bank accounts, investments, and most property count; your primary home and one vehicle are typically excluded.11Social Security Administration. Understanding Supplemental Security Income SSI Eligibility Requirements The maximum monthly SSI payment in 2026 is $994 for an individual and $1,491 for a couple.12Social Security Administration. How Much You Could Get From SSI Some applicants qualify for both programs, a situation known as concurrent benefits.
Medical Evidence That Carries a Leukemia Claim
Approval usually rises or falls on the medical file. Three kinds of records do the work.
Diagnostic records establish the disease. The SSA looks for bone marrow biopsy results (the definitive test for leukemia), complete blood counts, peripheral blood smears, pathology reports naming the type and stage, and cytogenetic or immunophenotyping analysis.4Social Security Administration. SSA POMS DI 23022.085 – Acute Leukemia
Treatment records show severity and course. Document all chemotherapy regimens, radiation therapy, stem cell transplants, hospitalizations, and changes to your treatment plan. Acute leukemia typically involves multiple phases of therapy — induction, post-remission, sometimes maintenance — and the SSA needs to see where you are in that sequence and how you have responded.
Functional impact documentation is the piece many applicants underuse. Ask your treating oncologist to describe your specific limitations in detail: how long you can sit, stand, or walk; whether fatigue prevents sustained concentration; how often infections or other complications interrupt your activities; and any cognitive effects from treatment. A statement like “patient is disabled” carries little weight. A specific observation, such as “patient requires unscheduled rest periods of 2–3 hours daily due to treatment-related fatigue,” changes RFC assessments.
How to Apply
Before you start, gather your Social Security number, proof of birth, and contact information for every doctor, hospital, and lab that has treated your leukemia.13Social Security Administration. Form SSA-16 – Information You Need to Apply for Disability Benefits You’ll also need a work history covering the past 15 years, including job titles, dates, duties, and earnings.14Social Security Administration. SSA-3369-BK – Work History Report For SSI, add bank statements, records of any income, and documentation of other resources.
You can file three ways:15Social Security Administration. Apply Online for Disability Benefits
- Online at SSA.gov, at any hour, with the ability to save and return.
- By phone at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- In person at your local Social Security office; call first for an appointment.
File as soon as you believe your condition meets the standard. The SSA requests records directly from providers, and waiting until every document is in hand can cost you months of back pay.
What Happens After You Apply
Your application moves through a two-stage initial review. The field office first checks non-medical eligibility — work credits for SSDI, income and resources for SSI.16Social Security Administration. Disability Determination Process Cases that clear that screen go to your state’s Disability Determination Services (DDS) for the medical decision.17Social Security Administration. How Does Someone Become Eligible
DDS examiners read your records and may request more from your providers. If the evidence isn’t enough to decide, DDS will schedule a consultative examination with an independent physician at no cost to you. That exam is typically brief, which is why detailed records from your own oncologist matter so much.
Initial decisions generally take six to eight months. Compassionate Allowances cases move much faster.18Social Security Administration. How Long Does It Take to Get a Decision After I Apply for Disability Benefits? The decision arrives by mail.
Waiting Periods, Back Pay, and Health Coverage
SSDI has a five-month waiting period from the date the SSA determines your disability began; your first payment lands in the sixth full month after that onset date.19Social Security Administration. Is There a Waiting Period for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) Benefits? SSI has no equivalent waiting period; payments start the first full month after you file.
If your leukemia disabled you before you applied, SSDI can pay retroactive benefits for up to 12 months before your application date, minus the five-month waiting period.20Social Security Administration. POMS GN 00204.030 – Retroactivity for Title II Benefits Delay costs back pay.
Medicare eligibility for SSDI recipients begins after 24 months of receiving benefits.21Social Security Administration. Medicare Information That is a long gap during active cancer treatment. Bridge options include employer-sponsored COBRA continuation, your state’s Medicaid program (which may have higher income limits for people with cancer), and ACA marketplace plans. SSI approval, by contrast, usually triggers automatic Medicaid enrollment in most states with no waiting period.
If Your Claim Is Denied
Most initial disability applications are denied. A denial is not the end of the case, and the odds of approval improve at the hearing stage.
Reconsideration
You have 60 days from the date of the denial letter to request reconsideration.22Social Security Administration. Request Reconsideration A different DDS examiner reviews the file from scratch. Add new medical evidence gathered since you first applied: updated lab work, hospitalization records, or a detailed functional statement from your doctor. You can file online, by phone, or on Form SSA-561-U2.
Hearing Before an Administrative Law Judge
If reconsideration fails, request a hearing before an Administrative Law Judge. You appear before the judge, often by video, testify about your condition and limitations, and the judge may call medical or vocational experts. Wait times can run 18 months or longer depending on the local caseload.
Appeals Council and Federal Court
If the ALJ denies the claim, you can ask the SSA’s Appeals Council to review it. Beyond that, you can file suit in federal district court.23Social Security Administration. Appeal a Decision We Made Few cases go that far, but the option exists.
Legal Representation
You can hire a disability attorney or representative at any stage. Most work on contingency. Fees under the SSA’s standard fee agreement are capped at 25% of past-due benefits or $9,200, whichever is less, and are paid directly from your back pay.24Social Security Administration. Fee Agreements Representation makes the biggest difference at the ALJ hearing.
