Does Lexus Warranty Cover Battery? 12V, Hybrid, and EV Traction

Lexus does cover batteries under warranty, but the terms depend entirely on which battery you mean. The original 12-volt battery is covered for 4 years or 50,000 miles. Hybrid battery packs get 8 years/100,000 miles on model year 2019 and earlier, or 10 years/150,000 miles on 2020 and newer. The traction battery in the fully electric RZ 450e is covered for 8 years or 100,000 miles, with a specific guarantee against losing more than 30% of its capacity.

The Original 12-Volt Battery

The 12-volt battery installed in a new Lexus is covered under the basic vehicle warranty for 48 months or 50,000 miles from the in-service date, whichever comes first.1Lexus Support. What Warranty Coverage Does My Battery Have If it fails due to a defect in materials or workmanship inside that window, a Lexus dealer replaces it at no charge.

If you later buy a Lexus Genuine replacement battery, whether installed by a dealer or bought over the counter, it carries its own prorated warranty:1Lexus Support. What Warranty Coverage Does My Battery Have

  • 0 to 24 months: free replacement.
  • 25 to 48 months: you pay 50% of MSRP.
  • 49 to 84 months: you pay 75% of MSRP.

Labor and towing are not part of the prorated pricing, so those come out of pocket once the free-replacement window closes. The 12-volt warranty specifically excludes hybrid vehicles and the LFA, which have their own coverage.

Hybrid Battery Coverage

The high-voltage battery in a Lexus hybrid runs on a much longer clock than the 12-volt, and the length turns on model year.

2019 and Older

Pre-2020 hybrids carry an 8-year or 100,000-mile hybrid battery warranty.2Lexus Pressroom. Lexus Extends Hybrid Battery Warranty for Model Year 2020 Vehicles The same term covers the other hybrid system parts: the hybrid battery control module, hybrid control module, and inverter with converter.3Lexus. Lexus Warranty

2020 and Newer

Beginning with the 2020 model year, Lexus extended hybrid battery coverage to 10 years from the date of first use or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first. The extension carries over to every subsequent owner, so a used 2020-or-later hybrid keeps the same coverage. Models covered at launch of the extension include the RX Hybrid, UX Hybrid, NX Hybrid, LC Hybrid, LS Hybrid, and ES Hybrid.2Lexus Pressroom. Lexus Extends Hybrid Battery Warranty for Model Year 2020 Vehicles

One catch: only the battery pack itself gets the longer term. The battery control module, hybrid control module, and inverter with converter stay at 8 years/100,000 miles.2Lexus Pressroom. Lexus Extends Hybrid Battery Warranty for Model Year 2020 Vehicles

Plug-In Hybrids

The NX 450h+ and RX 450h+ get the same 10-year/150,000-mile hybrid battery term, along with 8-year/100,000-mile coverage on the hybrid control module, inverter, and battery voltage sensor.4Toyota SIA. 2026 Lexus NX 450h+ Warranty and Services Guide Important limit for plug-in owners: gradual reduction of lithium-ion battery capacity is treated as a natural characteristic of the battery and is not a warrantable defect.5Toyota SIA. 2026 Lexus RX 450h+ Warranty and Services Guide

Electric Vehicle Traction Battery (RZ 450e)

The RZ 450e has an Electric Vehicle Drive Components Warranty covering the traction battery, transaxle, and inverter with converter for 8 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first, with a zero deductible.6Toyota SIA. 2025 Lexus RZ 450e Warranty and Services Guide7Lexus. 2025 Lexus RZ Brochure

Unlike the hybrid warranty, the RZ warranty spells out a capacity threshold. Lexus will repair or replace the traction battery if it drops below 70% of its original capacity during the warranty period. A loss of 30% or less counts as normal aging. One nuance in the fine print: if Lexus does replace the battery, the replacement can be reconditioned or remanufactured, and it only has to match the capacity the original had just before failure, not the capacity it left the factory with.6Toyota SIA. 2025 Lexus RZ 450e Warranty and Services Guide

What Voids or Excludes Coverage

Every battery warranty covers defects in materials or workmanship, not damage from how the vehicle was used or serviced. For 12-volt batteries, that means batteries that were opened, dropped, frozen, or discharged through negligence or abuse are excluded.1Lexus Support. What Warranty Coverage Does My Battery Have

The RZ 450e’s exclusion list is longer. Capacity loss from neglecting proper vehicle usage, using incorrect charging procedures, or plugging into an incompatible charging device is not covered. Neither is damage from abuse, racing, overloading, improper repairs, non-genuine parts, or events like floods, fires, or accidents.6Toyota SIA. 2025 Lexus RZ 450e Warranty and Services Guide

Extended Service Agreements Don’t Cover Batteries

If you’re considering a Lexus Vehicle Service Agreement to bridge the gap after the factory warranty ends, know that batteries are excluded. The Lexus Extra Care Platinum plan lists batteries, hybrid vehicle battery packs, fuel cell vehicle battery packs, and related assemblies as items it does not cover.8Lexus Financial. Lexus Extra Care Platinum Vehicle Service Agreement The L/Certified VSA for used vehicles carries the same exclusion.9Lexus Financial. L/Certified Vehicle Service Agreement Both plans include roadside jump-starts, but that’s assistance, not mechanical coverage.

Lexus offers a Hybrid Health Check in the UK that can extend hybrid battery coverage up to 15 years through annual inspections.10Lexus UK. Lexus Warranty How It Works No equivalent program exists in the United States.

Federal and California Rules Set a Floor

Whatever Lexus publishes, federal and state regulations create a minimum no manufacturer can undercut. Under the Clean Air Act, high-voltage batteries and electric powertrain components in battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles are classified as specified major emission control components, with a federal warranty minimum of 8 years or 80,000 miles.11GovInfo. 40 CFR 86.1815-27 Lexus’s own terms already sit above this floor, but if a claim were denied inside those limits, you could file an emissions defect report with the EPA.

California and states following California Air Resources Board standards can go further. Under the Advanced Clean Cars II rule, plug-in hybrids produced for the 2026 model year and later must carry a performance and defects warranty of 15 years or 150,000 miles to count toward a manufacturer’s Zero-Emission Vehicle mandate.12California Air Resources Board. 13 CCR Section 1962.4 Advanced Clean Cars II Battery-electric vehicles face a useful-life durability requirement of 10 years or 150,000 miles.13NESCAUM. ACC II ZEV FAQs States that adopt California’s rules must apply the same warranty provisions to vehicles sold there, so a Lexus PHEV or EV bought in one of those states for the 2026 model year and later may carry longer coverage than the national warranty page shows.

How To Make a Claim

Battery warranty claims go through an authorized Lexus dealership. For 12-volt replacements specifically, the prorated coverage only applies if a Lexus Genuine battery was installed by a Lexus dealer.1Lexus Support. What Warranty Coverage Does My Battery Have Lexus’s official guidance on hybrid battery questions is to see the dealer, and the warranty booklets do not require any specific paperwork from the owner beyond what the service department asks for.

What It Costs If the Warranty Doesn’t Apply

A 12-volt battery is cheap to replace out of pocket. A hybrid battery is not. Replacement estimates for a Lexus hybrid pack range from roughly $2,000 to $8,000, depending on the model, the condition of the pack, and whether it’s new or remanufactured.14Lexus of Concord. What Happens When Lexus Hybrid Battery Goes Bad Older and more common models like the RX 400h fall on the lower end; larger newer vehicles like the LS 600h push toward the top. Aftermarket and remanufactured packs from third-party suppliers can cost less, though they come with their own, shorter warranties.
