Does Mazda Warranty Cover Tires? Road Hazard and Protection Plans

Mazda’s new-vehicle warranty does not cover tires. Coverage for the tires on a new Mazda comes from the company that made them, not from Mazda itself, so a claim for a manufacturing defect runs through brands like Bridgestone, Toyo, Yokohama, or Michelin. Most Mazda dealerships will handle that paperwork for you. Road hazard damage to the original tires is not covered either, though Mazda sells separate programs that can fill that gap.

Why Tires Sit Outside the Factory Warranty

Mazda’s Warranty Information Booklet puts it in one line: “Tires are warranted by the Tire Manufacturers.”1Mazda USA. Warranty Information Booklet The 36-month/36,000-mile new-vehicle limited warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship for parts Mazda supplies. Tires come from outside suppliers and fall under the exclusion for “ordinary maintenance items or adjustments, parts subject to normal wear and replacement.”2Mazda USA. Warranty Brake linings, wiper blades, spark plugs, and filters are excluded for the same reason.3Mazda Canada. Warranty Coverage

Who Warranties Your Tires Instead

The warranty belongs to whichever tire brand is molded into the sidewall. New Mazdas ship with tires from a long list of suppliers: Bridgestone, Toyo, Yokohama, Michelin, Continental, Goodyear/Dunlop, Pirelli, Kumho, Falken, and Uniroyal Goodrich.4Mazda USA FAQ. What Is the Warranty on My Tires The specifics differ, but the shape of the coverage is consistent across brands:

  • Defects in materials or workmanship are covered; road hazards are not.
  • Replacement is usually free only within a short early window, then prorated by remaining tread.
  • Most original-equipment (OE) tires carry no mileage treadwear guarantee.
  • Improper inflation, overloading, and misalignment-related wear void coverage.

A few examples show how the window varies. Toyo covers OE tires for up to five years from the vehicle purchase date and replaces a defective tire free of charge, including mounting and balancing, when 25 percent or less of the tread has worn; past that point, replacement is prorated.5Toyo Tires. OE Warranty Bridgestone also runs five years from purchase but prorates all OE replacements from day one, with no free-replacement window.6Bridgestone. Full Warranty Yokohama gives a free replacement if the defective tire has worn less than 2/32 of an inch of tread or the vehicle is within 12 months of purchase, then prorates for up to 48 months.7Yokohama Tire. Warranty Michelin, for 2018 and newer vehicles, excludes OE tires from its mileage treadwear warranty and from the Michelin Promise Plan entirely; OE tires on 2011 through 2017 vehicles still get mileage and workmanship coverage.8Michelin. How to File a Tire Warranty Claim

The easiest route is to bring the vehicle to a Mazda dealership. Even though Mazda does not warranty the tires, most dealers will process the claim with the tire manufacturer for you, as long as the failure is a manufacturing defect and not road hazard damage or a maintenance issue.4Mazda USA FAQ. What Is the Warranty on My Tires You can also contact the tire maker directly; Mazda publishes a phone number for each OE supplier on its FAQ page.9Mazda USA FAQ. Ownership Maintenance and Warranty

Sidewall bulges are the common edge case. Mazda’s guidance to its dealers treats a bulge on a recently installed tire as a possible manufacturing defect that should be replaced under the tire maker’s warranty. A bulge that shows up after extended driving is usually read as impact damage, which tire manufacturers classify as road hazard and generally will not cover without proof that an outside force wasn’t the cause.10NHTSA. Road Hazard Coverage You Can Buy From Mazda

Because defect warranties leave potholes, nails, and glass uncovered, Mazda offers two separate programs for road hazard damage. They do not come with the vehicle automatically.

Mazda Tire Center Road Hazard Program

This coverage applies to tires purchased at a participating Mazda Tire Center dealership, not to the OE tires that came on the vehicle when new. It is administered by Sonsio Management, Inc. and covers damage from punctures, bruises, and impact breaks encountered during normal driving on maintained roads, including damage from nails, glass, and potholes.11Beach Mazda. Road Hazard Coverage for Mazda Tires The main terms:

  • Runs 24 months from the purchase date, or until tread reaches 2/32 of an inch, whichever comes first.
  • First-year coverage pays 100 percent of the cost, capped at $399.99 per tire.
  • Second-year coverage pays 50 percent.
  • Flat repair is covered up to $20 per occurrence.
  • Reimbursement is capped at the original purchase price or the replacement tire cost, whichever is less.

You have to return to a participating Mazda dealership to use it. If the original selling dealer no longer participates, you’ll be directed to the next available location.11Beach Mazda. Road Hazard Coverage for Mazda Tires

Optional Tire and Wheel Protection Plan

Mazda Financial Services sells a Tire and Wheel protection plan at the time of purchase or lease for new, Certified Pre-Owned, and pre-owned Mazdas. Unlike the Tire Center program, this plan covers both factory-installed and replacement tires and wheels for structural damage from eligible road hazards, as well as defects in materials or workmanship.12Mazda Financial Services. Tire and Wheel Protection and Key Replacement The Platinum tier covers tire and wheel structural damage; Platinum Plus adds paintless dent repair for dents up to four inches and windshield chip and crack repair for damage up to six inches (not available in Arizona or Florida). Both come with no deductible, no mileage limit, and no cap on structural-damage claims, plus towing up to $100 per occurrence. Terms run up to six years and transfer once to a private-party buyer at no charge.13Mazda Financial Services. Platinum Tire and Wheel Brochure

Tires with less than 3/32 of an inch of remaining tread at the time of damage are excluded, as is damage from vandalism, construction zones, and normal wear and tear. Any repair or replacement made without prior authorization is not covered.13Mazda Financial Services. Platinum Tire and Wheel Brochure

Roadside Assistance Is Not Tire Coverage

Every new Mazda includes 24/7 Emergency Roadside Assistance for the 36-month/36,000-mile warranty period. It covers flat tire changes (mounting the spare), jump starts, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing to a Mazda-authorized dealer.14Ingram Park Mazda. Does My Mazda Come With 24/7 Emergency Roadside Assistance If a powertrain failure strands the vehicle, towing stays covered for the full 60-month/60,000-mile powertrain warranty.2Mazda USA. Warranty The number is 800-866-1998.

Roadside assistance will get you moving after a flat, but it does not pay for a replacement tire. That cost still falls to the tire manufacturer’s defect warranty, the Mazda Tire Center road hazard program, or the Tire and Wheel plan, depending on what you have and what caused the damage.

Canadian Owners

Mazda Canada’s standard warranty likewise excludes tires and sends owners to the tire manufacturers’ own pamphlets.3Mazda Canada. Warranty Coverage The optional Mazda Added Protection (MAP) program, however, builds tire road hazard coverage into every new-vehicle plan: full replacement for the first two years or 40,000 kilometers, prorated replacement up to five years or 100,000 kilometers, and tire repair coverage for the life of the contract. MAP covers original tires along with replacement and winter tires bought at a Mazda dealer, carries no deductible, and extends up to seven years or 200,000 kilometers overall.15Kanata Mazda. Added Protection MAP is not sold in British Columbia.16Mazda Canada. Warranty
