Trex’s limited warranty does not specifically cover warping. The word “warping” appears nowhere in the list of covered defects, which is limited to splitting, splintering, rot, and structural damage from termites or fungal decay. Warping claims fall into a gray zone where Trex almost always concludes the cause was improper installation or substructure movement, both of which are excluded. So while a warped board is not automatically denied, the burden falls on you to prove the deformation came from a material defect rather than anything Trex can point to in the installation.
What the Warranty Names as Covered
The Trex Decking, Fascia and Cladding Limited Warranty is built around three promises: physical integrity, fade resistance, and stain resistance. Physical integrity covers splitting, splintering, rot, and structural damage from termites or fungal decay. Fade resistance guarantees color change will not exceed 5 Delta E units during the first 25 years, or 15 Delta E for the remainder. Stain resistance covers permanent staining from common food and beverage spills, and from mold or mildew, if the substance is cleaned within one week.1Lowes. Trex Decking, Fascia and Cladding Limited Warranty
Warping is not in any of those three categories. The closest the document comes to addressing it is on the exclusions side, where coverage is denied for “movement, distortion, collapse or settling of the ground or the supporting structure.”2Lowes. Trex Limited Warranty Guide That phrase gives Trex broad latitude to treat a warped board as a substructure problem instead of a defect in the material.
Exclusions That Sink Most Warping Claims
Several written exclusions are used repeatedly to deny warping-related claims:1Lowes. Trex Decking, Fascia and Cladding Limited Warranty
- Failure to follow Trex’s installation guidelines, including gapping between boards. This voids coverage entirely.
- Movement, distortion, collapse, or settling of the ground or substructure.
- Direct or indirect contact with heat sources over 275°F (135°C), including concentrated sunlight reflected off low-emissivity windows.
- Improper handling or storage before installation. Trex requires boards to be stored on a flat, level surface with dunnage supports spaced two feet apart.3Trex. Trex Decking Installation Guide
- Normal weathering, defined as gradual fading, chalking, or dirt accumulation.2Lowes. Trex Limited Warranty Guide
- Ordinary wear and tear.
- Use outside of “normal use or service conditions” or in applications not recommended by Trex guidelines and local building codes.4DecksDirect. Trex Limited Warranty
Any one of these can be enough to close out a claim.
How Denials Typically Play Out
Complaints filed with the Better Business Bureau show a repeating pattern. A homeowner reports warping, cupping, or lifting; Trex reviews photos; Trex responds that the cause was an installation failure.
In a BBB complaint from October 2025, a homeowner reported warping and lifting boards. Trex denied the claim because fascia boards lacked “proper end-to-end gapping” and fastening. In August 2025, Trex denied a cupping claim on the grounds that joists “may” not be level, adding that the materials “did not leave their factory in this condition.” A September 2024 complaint involved warping at butt joints; Trex denied coverage because the product was “not installed correctly” and the installer was not a TrexPro-certified contractor.5BBB. Trex Company Inc Complaints
Consumer reviews echo the pattern. A homeowner in Port Matilda, Pennsylvania, had a warping claim denied because Trex changed its installation guidance in 2015, the same year the deck was installed. A Rochester, New York, owner said a Trex representative denied a curling-board claim without visiting the site, calling the deck “installed a wrong.” A Chicago-area homeowner filed a claim with photos and receipts and reported no response after five months.6ConsumerAffairs. When Trex denies a warping claim, it typically points the homeowner to its official installation guides to show the deck did not meet Trex’s spacing, drainage, or fastening requirements.5BBB. Trex Company Inc Complaints
Installation Rules Trex Will Check
Because Trex ties coverage to installation compliance, the specifications matter. If you are considering a claim, these are the numbers Trex will measure your deck against.
Joist spacing. Standard residential installations require joists no more than 16 inches on center. Diagonal installations require 12 inches. Stair stringers should also be spaced at 12 inches or less. When replacing wood decking on an existing structure with 24-inch joist spacing, Trex requires adding a new joist between each existing one.7Trex. How to Install Deck Joists
Board gapping. Width-to-width gaps should be 3/16 inch as a standard, or 3/8 inch in heavily wooded areas where debris collects. End-to-end gaps should be 1/8 inch when the temperature is above 40°F and 3/16 inch below 40°F. Where boards abut solid objects like house walls, the required gap increases to 1/4 inch above 40°F and 1/2 inch below 40°F.8Trex. How to Space Deck Boards
Fasteners. Two screws per joist. Screws must sit flush with the board’s cap, not countersunk or driven through the shell. Hidden fastener clips create a 1/4-inch gap and are designed for grooved-edge boards.3Trex. Trex Decking Installation Guide
Substructure. Joists must be installed with the natural crown facing upward. An uneven substructure transfers directly to the decking surface. Trex recommends planing down high spots on joist tops and treating the planed area with wood preservative.7Trex. How to Install Deck Joists
Framing movement beneath the surface causes warping more often than failure of the board itself, which is why Trex looks there first.7Trex. How to Install Deck Joists Environmental conditions matter too: extreme heat and direct sun cause composite boards to expand, moisture trapped beneath the deck can cause swelling, and concentrated reflected sunlight from low-emissivity windows can produce localized bowing or charring.3Trex. Filing a Warping Claim Anyway
If you have reason to believe the warping is a material defect rather than an installation issue, claims go through Trex’s online portal or by phone at 1-800-BUY-TREX. Trex will ask for:9Trex. Warranty Claim – Get Started
- Proof of purchase: a photo of the product lot code or end tag, a retailer invoice, or a contractor invoice listing the Trex product.
- At least three photos of the warping, a panoramic photo of the entire deck, and a photo of the end of a deck board.
- Proof of property ownership, such as a current-year property tax bill, deed, mortgage statement, or upcoming mortgage payment coupon.
- Installation date (must be 1996 or later), contractor information, and the product lot code from the bottom or side edge of the board.
Claims may also be sent in writing to Trex Company, Inc., Customer Relations, 2500 Trex Way, Winchester, VA 22601. The process moves through five stages: creation, review by a consumer loyalty advocate, offer letter, settlement of the signed offer, and closure.9Trex. Warranty Claim – Get Started
Given how denials tend to be written, document the installation itself alongside the warping. Measure joist spacing, gap distances, and fastener placement, and photograph them. Trex will evaluate whether the installation met its guidelines before it will consider a material-defect determination.
What the Warranty Won’t Pay Even If Approved
Two limits are worth knowing before you invest time in a claim. First, the warranty does not cover labor or freight costs for removing defective boards or installing replacements, regardless of how the claim is decided.10Home Depot Canada. Trex Warranty Guide Second, claims filed after year 10 are prorated. The percentage of replacement material or purchase-price refund declines with time. A Transcend owner filing a valid claim in year 12 would receive 90 percent coverage, dropping to 50 percent by year 23 and 10 percent by the final years. Enhance owners start at 80 percent in year 11 and fall to 10 percent by years 23 through 25.1Lowes. Trex Decking, Fascia and Cladding Limited Warranty
Active Legal Investigation Into Trex Warping Denials
As of August 2025, a Washington, D.C.-based law firm announced an active investigation into Trex Enhance and other composite decking products, focused on consumer reports of warping, cupping, curling, and deformation occurring shortly after installation. The investigation alleges that Trex has denied warranty claims by mischaracterizing these deformities as “normal weathering,” and that affected homeowners have faced replacement costs ranging from $10,000 to $25,000. No formal lawsuit had been filed as of mid-2026; the firm was still gathering information from homeowners to determine whether a class action is viable.11Trex. Class Action Settlement
If your claim has been denied on weathering or installation grounds and you have documentation of the warping, that investigation is a place to make yourself known while you consider whether to pursue a replacement out of pocket.
