Driving Ages in Germany: Cars, Motorcycles, and Accompanied Driving

The minimum driving age in Germany is 18 for a standard car license, but you can drive a car at 17 under a supervised-learner program, ride a moped at 15, and start on light motorcycles at 16. Heavier motorcycles, trucks, and buses have higher minimums, some of which drop if you complete professional driver training.

The full Class B car license is available at 18. It covers cars and other motor vehicles up to 3,500 kilograms with no more than eight passenger seats, plus trailers within set weight limits.1Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt. Germany’s Begleitetes Fahren ab 17 (BF17) program lets you drive a car a year early, as long as a named adult rides in the passenger seat. You can apply from age 16 and a half, with parental or guardian consent. The theory exam can be taken up to three months before your 17th birthday and the practical test up to one month before.2Ludwigsburg. Mopeds and Motorcycles

Two-wheelers are split across four license classes, each with its own minimum age. The idea is that you start on slower, lighter machines and work up.

Class AM: Mopeds at 15

Class AM covers two- and three-wheeled mopeds and light four-wheeled vehicles limited to 45 km/h. The nationwide minimum age has been 15 since July 28, 2021, after pilot programs in several states.4Bundesportal. Trucks and Buses

Professional categories have higher minimums, but recognized vocational training brings them down.

For heavy trucks over 3,500 kg (Class C) and truck-trailer combinations (CE), the standard minimum is 21. Trainees in state-recognized professional driver programs can qualify at 18.

For minibuses (D1), the minimum is 21. For the full bus license (D), the standard minimum is 24, dropping to 21 after a basic professional qualification. Trainees in recognized professional driver apprenticeships can obtain the D license as early as 20, or 18 for scheduled routes up to 50 km.7TÜV Nord. Bus Driving Licence

Rules That Apply to New and Young Drivers

Reaching the minimum age is not the end of the age-based rules. Every first-time driver enters a two-year probationary period called the Probezeit, during which traffic violations carry stricter consequences and can extend the probation to four years or trigger mandatory remedial courses. Holders of Class AM, L, or T licenses are the exception and do not enter probation.

Alcohol rules are also stricter for younger drivers. Germany applies an absolute zero-tolerance rule to every driver under 21 and to every driver still in the probationary period, whatever their age. Any detectable alcohol brings a fine, points, and a possible extension of probation. The 0.5 per mille limit that applies to experienced adult drivers does not cover you if you are under 21 or still in your Probezeit.

Driving in Germany on a Foreign License

A visitor’s home-country license is generally valid for the length of a tourist stay. An International Driving Permit is a useful companion because it carries a standardized German translation, but it is not a license on its own.

Once you establish “normal residence” in Germany, defined broadly as living there at least 185 days a year, a non-EU or non-EEA license stays valid for only six months. After that, driving on it is treated as driving without a license.8Bundesministerium für Digitales und Verkehr. Validity of Foreign Driving Licences in the Federal Republic of Germany U.S. license holders staying under a year can extend the window to up to 364 days by notifying the local licensing office before the initial period expires and submitting an official translation along with proof of departure plans.9U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Germany.
