US citizens with a regular passport get a free visa on arrival in Dubai and the rest of the UAE, valid for stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day window. There is no advance application, no embassy appointment, and no fee. You land, your passport is stamped, and you’re through. Before you book anything, though, check the current US State Department advisory for the UAE, because the level can shift with regional events and may change your plans.
Check the Travel Advisory First
As of March 2026, the State Department has placed the UAE under a Level 3: Reconsider Travel advisory. It cites the threat of drone and missile attacks following the onset of hostilities between the United States and Iran in late February 2026, along with significant disruptions to commercial flights. The situation is fluid. If you decide to travel anyway, enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) so the US Embassy can reach you in an emergency, and have an independent departure plan that does not rely on government assistance. Travel insurance that covers evacuation and trip cancellation is worth buying before you go.
How the 90-Day Visa on Arrival Works

Within that 180-day window, your total time inside the UAE cannot exceed 90 days. You can use it in one stretch or split across several trips. The visa covers tourism, family visits, and business meetings where you are not earning a UAE salary. What You Need at the Border
Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date. Airlines check this at boarding and UAE immigration checks it again on entry; falling short means denied boarding or refused entry.3The Official Platform of the UAE Government. Check if You Need a Visa to Enter the UAE
Bring a confirmed return or onward ticket to a destination outside the UAE. Officers may also ask for proof of funds to cover your stay. Extending Past 90 Days
If you want to stay longer without leaving, apply for an extension through the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP). Extensions can be granted once or several times, but the total stay cannot exceed 120 days. Apply before your current authorization expires. Once your permitted stay lapses, you are immediately in overstay status and fines start accruing the next day. There is no grace period for tourist visa holders.
Prescription Medications: The Trap Most Americans Miss
Common US prescriptions may be controlled or banned in the UAE. Stimulants for ADHD, painkillers containing codeine or tramadol, some sleep aids, and anti-anxiety medications all fall under UAE narcotics or psychotropic substance controls.
If you take any controlled medication, apply for a permit through the Emirates Drug Establishment (EDE) portal before you fly. The permit is free and usually processed within one working day. You’ll need a prescription issued within the last three months (with your full name, medication name, dose, and treating physician) plus a medical report stamped by your healthcare facility. Arriving with a controlled medication and no permit can lead to detention and criminal charges. When in doubt, check the EDE’s controlled substances list before packing.
Local Laws That Catch Visitors Off Guard
The UAE enforces social conduct rules that have no US equivalent, and ignorance is not a defense. Getting these wrong can mean fines, arrest, or deportation.
The legal drinking age is 21. You can drink in licensed venues (hotel bars, restaurants, beach clubs) or in your hotel room. Drinking in public spaces such as parks, streets, or beaches is illegal. Being visibly intoxicated in public is also a criminal offense, even if you were drinking legally in a bar minutes earlier.
Dress modestly in public areas and shopping malls. Clothing should not be transparent or expose significant skin. Swimwear belongs at the beach, water park, or pool and nowhere else. Topless sunbathing is prohibited everywhere. Holding hands is fine. Kissing and hugging in public are not. Obscene gestures, foul language, and any form of disrespect toward the UAE, its leaders, or Islam can lead to legal trouble and deportation. Social media posts made from the UAE are subject to UAE law. Content others find offensive, defamatory, or culturally disrespectful can trigger prosecution even if the same post would be protected speech in the US.
One customs note worth flagging: if you’re carrying more than AED 60,000 in cash (roughly $16,300 USD) or the equivalent in other currencies, financial instruments, precious metals, or gemstones, declare it to the ICP on arrival or departure.9The Official Platform of the UAE Government. If You Want to Stay Longer Than a Tourist Visa Allows
The visa on arrival covers tourism only. For anything more, the UAE offers several long-term residency paths, each requiring paperwork before or shortly after arrival.
Employment Visa
You cannot work in the UAE on a tourist visa. A UAE-licensed employer must sponsor you and apply for an employment entry permit. The employer handles most of the process, usually starting with a temporary work permit and ending in a residence visa after you arrive.
Golden Visa
The Golden Visa is a renewable long-term residence permit lasting five or ten years, depending on the category, with no sponsor required. Eligible categories include investors (minimum capital of AED 2 million for the ten-year option), entrepreneurs with innovative projects, and individuals with exceptional talent in fields like science, medicine, engineering, or the arts.10Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security. Green Visa
The Green Visa is a five-year renewable residence permit that also removes the employer sponsor requirement. It targets skilled workers, freelancers, and investors or business partners setting up commercial activity in the UAE. Virtual Working Visa
If you work remotely for a company outside the UAE, the Virtual Working Visa lets you live in Dubai for one year while keeping your foreign employer. The minimum income threshold is $3,500 USD per month. You’ll need proof of employment with a non-UAE entity, salary documentation, and valid health insurance. Retirement Visa
US citizens 55 or older can apply for a five-year retirement visa by meeting one of two financial thresholds:
- Own UAE property worth at least AED 1 million and hold financial savings of at least AED 1 million.
- Earn at least AED 180,000 per year (roughly $49,000 USD) from any verifiable source, inside or outside the country. Applying through Dubai specifically raises the income threshold to AED 240,000 per year (roughly $65,000 USD).

Overstay Penalties
Tourist visa holders get no grace period. The moment your authorized stay expires, fines start accruing at 50 AED per day (about $13.60 USD). These add up quickly and must be paid before you can leave the country. On top of the daily fines, expect an exit permit fee of roughly 250 to 300 AED when departing after an overstay.15GDRFA Dubai. Working on a tourist visa is treated much more seriously than a simple overstay. Penalties can include substantial fines and deportation. The severest consequences of immigration violations in the UAE include detention, a mandatory deportation order, and an entry ban that prevents you from returning. The UAE enforces these rules consistently, and the US Embassy has limited ability to intervene beyond consular visits.
If you realize you have overstayed, go directly to immigration or contact the ICP rather than hoping nobody notices at the airport. Handling it proactively tends to produce better outcomes than being flagged at departure.
