A Dubai work visa now takes roughly five working days to process under the UAE’s integrated Work Bundle system, which replaced a previous 30-working-day pipeline spread across multiple agencies.1The Official Platform of the UAE Government. Work Permits In practice, free zone routing, security clearance checks, or missing paperwork can stretch that to two or three weeks. Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021 governs the underlying employment relationship, with the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) issuing work permits and the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) handling residency visas.2UAE Legislation. Where the Five Days Comes From
The Work Bundle collapsed a fragmented, multi-agency process into a single flow. It cut the required steps from 15 to 5, the number of documents from 16 to 5, and in-person visits from 7 to 2.1The Official Platform of the UAE Government. Work Permits Employers now handle the work permit, residency visa, medical examination booking, and Emirates ID registration through one integrated portal.
The old timeline stacked each stage in sequence. MOHRE alone still formally takes about two working days to process a new overseas work permit.3Ministry of Human Resources & Emiratisation. Issuance of a New Work Permit – Overseas After that, the medical fitness test, biometric registration, and residency visa each carried their own processing windows. The Work Bundle runs those in parallel, and that’s where the time savings come from. If your employer hasn’t adopted the Work Bundle, or your setup falls outside its scope, plan on the older three-to-four-week window instead.
What Has to Be Ready Before the Clock Starts
Missing or non-compliant paperwork is the most common reason a five-day case becomes a three-week case. The chain depends on your home country but generally begins with a national authority and ends at a UAE Embassy or consulate. MOHRE also classifies jobs into nine professional levels based on the International Standard Classification of Occupations, from senior managers down to elementary occupations. If your credentials don’t match the level on your contract, expect a rejection and a restart.
The Steps and How Long Each One Takes
Your employer starts the process, not you. The sequence usually runs like this:
- Entry permit. Your employer files with MOHRE for a work entry permit that lets you enter the UAE specifically for employment. It’s issued electronically and typically arrives within a few working days of approval.
- Arrival and medical test. Once in the country, you complete a mandatory medical fitness examination at a government-approved facility. The blood test screens for communicable diseases including HIV. Domestic workers, food handlers, nursery staff, and salon workers also undergo syphilis and hepatitis B testing, and female domestic workers must additionally test negative for pregnancy.6The Official Platform of the UAE Government. - Biometric registration. You visit an ICP service center to provide fingerprints and other biometric data for your Emirates ID, which serves as the primary identification for all UAE residents.7The Official Platform of the UAE Government. Emirates ID
- Residency visa. After medical clearance and biometrics, the GDRFA issues your residency visa as either a passport stamp or a digital notification. Finalized documents are usually delivered by courier.

Free Zone vs. Mainland
Where your employer is registered changes who processes your visa and how long it takes. Mainland companies use MOHRE and the GDRFA and follow the standard federal channels. Free zones operate under their own authorities. The Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC), the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), and dozens of other zones each run visa processing through their own internal portals and service desks.8DMCC. This can go either way on timing. Some free zones have dedicated processing teams that move faster than the mainland pipeline. Others add zone-specific documentation or background checks that lengthen the timeline by several days. DIFC, for instance, operates an entirely independent regulatory and legal system, so its internal procedures don’t mirror the mainland.9DIFC. What Commonly Adds Days or Weeks
Security Clearance
Every expatriate worker goes through a security background check by UAE state security agencies. For most applicants it clears within a few days and runs quietly in the background. Certain nationalities and professional roles trigger extended vetting that can add a week or more. There’s no way to expedite it, and neither your employer nor the immigration authority can tell you exactly when it will clear.
Ramadan and Public Holidays
During Ramadan, UAE public sector offices work shortened hours: 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to noon on Fridays. That compression creates a review backlog that typically adds several days. Long weekends and major public holidays produce a similar effect. If your application overlaps Ramadan, build in an extra week of buffer.
Changing Status Inside the Country
If you’re already in the UAE on a tourist or visit visa and your employer wants to convert you without an exit, a change-of-status application is required. The existing visa has to be cancelled before the new one issues, which adds time. Many applicants still find a brief exit and re-entry faster than an in-country change, though your nationality and your employer’s preference will influence which route makes sense.
Credential Equivalency
If you work in healthcare, teaching, engineering, or a government role, you may need a Ministry of Education equivalency certificate that verifies your foreign qualifications against UAE standards. It runs on its own timeline separate from the visa process. Start it well before your employer files the work permit application, or the visa file will sit waiting for it.
How Long the Visa Lasts Once Issued
A standard employment residence visa is valid for two years and is renewable so long as the employment relationship continues and the issuing authority’s conditions are met.10The Official Platform of the UAE Government. Residence Visa for Working in the UAE Renewal follows a similar path to the initial issuance but is generally faster because your documents are already in the system. Golden visas of five or ten years and green visas exist for qualifying professionals and investors, but they run on separate application tracks with their own timelines.
