To serve a subpoena on Edward Jones, direct it to the correct legal entity — for brokerage and advisory records, that is Edward D. Jones & Co., L.P., at 12555 Manchester Road, St. Louis, Missouri 63131 — and deliver it to the firm’s legal or subpoena compliance department with all Rule 45 (or state equivalent) requirements satisfied, including notice to other parties, tendered witness and mileage fees, and notice to the affected client.1FINRA BrokerCheck. Name the Right Entity
Edward Jones is not one company. The primary broker-dealer and registered investment adviser is Edward D. Jones & Co., L.P., a Missouri limited partnership, and this is the entity that holds most brokerage and advisory account records.1FINRA BrokerCheck. Edward D. Jones & Co., L.P.
Trust records live somewhere else. Edward Jones Trust Company is a separate affiliate.3Edward Jones. Trust Company Services If you need trust administration files, trustee records, or managed trust accounts, the subpoena must name the Trust Company, not the broker-dealer. Serving the wrong subsidiary — even within the same corporate family — is treated as a defect. Confirm which entity has custody of the records you actually want before you draft.
What the Subpoena Must Say
Vague identifiers are the fastest way to stall in a compliance queue. Include the client’s full legal name and current address, plus previous addresses if the records span a long period. The strongest identifiers are the full account numbers for every relevant account. When account numbers are unknown, use the client’s Social Security Number or Tax Identification Number — those are how financial systems link accounts to individuals.
Specify the date range. Specify the document types. Monthly account statements, trade confirmations, new-account forms, and internal correspondence are different records with different search paths. Naming the categories narrows the search and cuts the odds of an undue-burden objection.
Where and How to Deliver Service
Send service to Edward D. Jones & Co., L.P., 12555 Manchester Road, St. Louis, Missouri 63131, addressed to the firm’s legal or subpoena compliance department.2Investment Adviser Public Disclosure. Form ADV – Edward D. Jones & Co., L.P. Serving a local financial advisor at a branch office generally does not work. Branches do not hold centralized client records, and in most jurisdictions branch staff have no authority to accept service for the corporate entity.
Accepted delivery methods typically include personal service by a process server and service by certified or registered mail. Naming the Custodian of Records in the subpoena is a practical touch — it lets the firm respond with an authenticated business-records affidavit rather than sending someone to testify.
Rule 45 and Its State Equivalents
Most subpoenas to Edward Jones are document-production subpoenas governed by Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 45 or an analogous state rule. A few requirements catch practitioners repeatedly.
Serve Notice on Every Other Party First
Before serving the subpoena on Edward Jones, serve notice and a copy of the subpoena on every other party in the litigation.4Legal Information Institute. Federal Rules of Civil Procedure Rule 45 – Subpoena Skip this and opposing counsel has grounds to challenge whatever gets produced, up to and including having the evidence struck.
Who Serves It
Any person at least 18 years old who is not a party may serve the subpoena.4Legal Information Institute. Federal Rules of Civil Procedure Rule 45 – Subpoena
The 100-Mile Geographic Limit
A subpoena can only require compliance at a location within 100 miles of where the recipient resides, is employed, or regularly conducts business.4Legal Information Institute. Federal Rules of Civil Procedure Rule 45 – Subpoena For Edward Jones, that compliance point is generally St. Louis. A subpoena issued from a distant court that demands production somewhere outside that radius invites a motion to quash.
Avoid Undue Burden
The issuing attorney has a duty to take reasonable steps to avoid imposing undue burden or expense.4Legal Information Institute. Federal Rules of Civil Procedure Rule 45 – Subpoena Sprawling requests with no date limitation are the classic trigger for sanctions, including attorney’s fees and lost earnings to the subpoenaed entity.
Fees You Must Tender and Costs You Should Expect
If the subpoena commands attendance, you must tender the statutory attendance fee and mileage at the time of service.4Legal Information Institute. Federal Rules of Civil Procedure Rule 45 – Subpoena For federal subpoenas, the witness attendance fee is $40 per day, plus the attendance fee for travel time to and from the place of attendance.5Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 28 USC 1821 – Per Diem and Mileage Generally Travel by privately owned vehicle is reimbursed at the GSA rate, which is $0.725 per mile for 2026.6General Services Administration. Privately Owned Vehicle (POV) Mileage Reimbursement Rates Subpoenas issued on behalf of the United States or its agencies are exempt from tendering. State court subpoenas have their own statutory fees, typically modest, and usually must be tendered at service.
Beyond witness fees, Edward Jones can seek reimbursement for the reasonable costs of searching, retrieving, reviewing, and reproducing records. These production costs cover personnel time and copying, and they scale with the volume of records and the jurisdiction’s rules. Expect to pay either upfront on an estimate or on a bill after production.
Notify the Client Before Records Are Released
Two privacy frameworks affect when Edward Jones can hand records over.
Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act
The GLBA generally restricts financial institutions from disclosing nonpublic personal information about customers, but a properly authorized civil, criminal, or regulatory subpoena falls within an explicit exception.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 6802 – Obligations With Respect to Disclosures of Personal Information Client consent is not required under this exception.
As a matter of internal policy, Edward Jones typically still requires the requesting party to show that the affected client has been notified of the subpoena or that a court order excuses notice. The firm then observes a waiting period before producing anything, giving the client a chance to object or move to quash. Have a copy of the notice sent to the client ready, along with an affidavit confirming when and how it was delivered.
Right to Financial Privacy Act for Government Subpoenas
If the subpoena comes from a government authority, a stricter framework applies. The Right to Financial Privacy Act bars government agencies from obtaining customer financial records unless specific procedures are followed.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 12 USC 3405 – Administrative Subpena and Summons For an administrative subpoena, the government must serve a copy on the customer (or mail it to the customer’s last known address) on or before the date it is served on the institution, and the notice must describe the nature of the inquiry with reasonable specificity.
The government then must wait 10 days (14 days if the notice was mailed) before Edward Jones can release records. Within that window, the customer can file a motion to quash in federal district court with a sworn statement explaining why the records should not be released.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 12 USC 3405 – Administrative Subpena and Summons Skip these steps and the firm is legally prohibited from producing anything.
What Happens If Edward Jones Objects
Edward Jones can object to all or part of the subpoena, and the compliance team is practiced at it. Under federal rules, a written objection must be served before the earlier of the compliance deadline or 14 days after service.4Legal Information Institute. Federal Rules of Civil Procedure Rule 45 – Subpoena Once the objection is filed, production halts until you get a court order compelling compliance, and the court must protect a non-party like Edward Jones from significant expense in that order.
Courts must quash or modify a subpoena that fails to allow reasonable time to comply, exceeds the geographic limits, demands privileged material, or subjects the recipient to undue burden.4Legal Information Institute. Federal Rules of Civil Procedure Rule 45 – Subpoena Trade secrets and confidential commercial information can also support a motion to quash. Broad requests with no account number or date range are the ones that draw objections. Narrow, specific requests move through faster.
Confirm the Records Still Exist
A perfectly served subpoena cannot produce records the firm no longer holds. Federal securities regulations require broker-dealers to retain core account records — including ledgers and customer account information — for at least six years, with the first two years in an easily accessible location. Communications, trade blotters, order tickets, and most other operational records must be preserved for at least three years.9eCFR. 17 CFR 240.17a-4 – Records to Be Preserved by Certain Exchange Members, Brokers and Dealers Account cards and records relating to the terms and conditions of a customer account must be kept for six years after the account is closed.
Those are floors. Edward Jones may keep records longer, but do not count on it. If the subpoena reaches back 10 or 15 years on a closed account, the records may be gone, and the firm has no obligation to produce what it does not have. When timing matters, serve early.
