An Elite Charged TM is a rare Pokémon GO item that lets you pick the exact charged move you want to teach a Pokémon, including legacy moves from past Community Days and other time-limited events that you can’t otherwise get. A standard Charged TM picks randomly from the Pokémon’s current move pool. The Elite version removes the randomness and opens the full historical list, which is why competitive players and collectors treat it as one of the most valuable items in the game.
How to Get an Elite Charged TM
Niantic’s help page lists two main sources: end-of-season rewards in GO Battle League for players who reach a high rank, and the in-game shop during special events such as Community Days. The help page calls the item “rare” and available during “limited times,” and does not state the exact rank you need to earn one as a free reward.1Niantic Help Center. How Can I Obtain Elite TMs
Niantic has also run free progress-based tracks. During the “Precious Paths” GO Battle League season, a free Timed Research Pass in the shop let players earn Elite TMs by working through research pages, with each page requiring 100 battles and 50 wins to complete. It is a real free path, but a slow one aimed at dedicated players.2Pokémon GO Live. GO Battle League: Precious Paths
What It Costs to Buy One
Elite Charged TMs are regularly bundled into paid Community Day content rather than sold as a standalone item. During the January 2025 Sprigatito Community Day, the item appeared in an “Ultra Community Day Box” priced at $4.99 on Niantic’s web store, and in a 1,350 PokéCoin bundle available in the game during the event.3CBR. That same event drew criticism when Niantic doubled the price of its standard Special Research ticket from the longstanding $0.99 to $1.99. Players argued that the only meaningful addition to the pricier ticket was three encounters with Pokémon featuring special backgrounds, and community discussion widely advised against buying it.3CBR. Refunds for an Unwanted Purchase
Niantic does not process refunds for in-app purchases directly. Its policy routes you to the store where you paid: Apple Support for iOS, Google Play Help for Android, and the Galaxy App Store for Samsung devices.4Niantic Help Center. If a Minor Made the Purchase
California law gives minors the right to disaffirm contracts, and a class action titled D.D. v. Niantic, Inc. (Case No. 23STCV03241) alleged that Niantic’s “all sales final” terms stripped that right from minor players.8ClassAction.org. Pokemon Go Maker Niantic Deprives Minors of Right to Refunds Class Action Says The case reached a final settlement approved in August 2024. The relief was non-monetary: Niantic agreed to update its Terms of Service, change its refund processes to account for the minor status of purchasers, and improve disclosures about refund policies for minors under the California Family Code. The settlement explicitly stated that it was not an admission of wrongdoing.9Bursor & Fisher P.A. Final Order Approving Class Action Settlement, D.D. v. Niantic If the purchase on your account was made by a minor, that history is worth citing when you ask the app store or Xsolla for a refund.
Is an Elite Charged TM a Loot Box?
No. You know exactly what you are getting when you buy one, so the random-reward rules that regulators are focused on don’t apply to the item itself. The item does sit inside a broader paid ecosystem that is drawing scrutiny, and the rules around that ecosystem are shifting.
In the United States, no federal law specifically regulates loot boxes or mobile game microtransactions. The FTC oversees deceptive or unfair practices under Section 5 of the FTC Act and has stated that any disclosure of loot box odds must be “accurate and nonmisleading.”10Federal Trade Commission. Loot Box Workshop Staff Perspective In February 2026, New York Attorney General Letitia James filed suit against Valve Corporation, arguing that loot box mechanics in its games constitute unlawful gambling under the state constitution and penal code. A separate consumer class action against Valve was filed in Washington state the following month.11Frankfurt Kurnit Klein & Selz. New York and Washington Take On the Final Boss of Loot Boxes Those cases target Valve, not Niantic, but their outcomes could influence how publishers price and sell scarce items generally.
In Europe, the Commission is preparing the Digital Fairness Act, with a legislative proposal expected by late 2026, aimed at dark patterns, addictive design, and manipulative spending mechanics. Measures under consideration include showing real-world prices alongside virtual currency, restricting randomized rewards, and introducing a 14-day right of withdrawal for unused virtual currency.12Freshfields. The EUs Proposed Digital Fairness Act: A Game Developers Guide Since October 2020, Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony have required publishers to disclose the probabilities of obtaining items from paid loot boxes in new games and updates, and major mobile platforms have adopted similar requirements. The PEGI code of conduct was updated in 2024 to require that paying for random items “never be essential to the gameplay.”13European Games Developer Federation. Loot Boxes None of these frameworks name the Elite Charged TM, but the scarcity-plus-paywall design is the exact pattern they are built to address.
