England Visa from the USA: ETA, Costs, and Processing Times

A U.S. citizen going to England for a holiday, a family visit, a business meeting, or a short course of six months or less does not need a visa. What you do need, as of February 25, 2026, is an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) approved before you fly. An England visa from the USA becomes necessary only when your plans go beyond a short visit: taking a job, enrolling in a longer program of study, or moving in with a British partner. The type of visa, the fee, and the documents you’ll submit all depend on which of those you’re doing.1U.S. Embassy & Consulate in Spain and Andorra. The ETA for Short Visits

Every U.S. citizen visiting the UK for six months or less now needs an approved ETA before departure. That covers tourism, family visits, business meetings, conferences, and short-term study.1U.S. Embassy & Consulate in Spain and Andorra. Routine Message: Reminder – UK Entry Requirements as of February 25, 2026 Without one, an airline can deny boarding and a UK border officer can refuse entry.

The ETA costs £20 as of April 8, 2026, and you apply through GOV.UK. Everyone traveling needs their own, including babies and children. Most decisions arrive within 24 hours, but the Home Office asks you to allow up to three working days. An ETA doesn’t guarantee entry — a border officer still makes that call at the airport — but you can’t board a UK-bound flight without one.2GOV.UK. People holding a British or Irish passport, or who already have permission to live, work, or study in the UK, don’t need an ETA.2GOV.UK. One thing the ETA does not do: give you permission to work, paid or unpaid, or to claim public benefits.3GOV.UK. Visit the UK as a Standard Visitor – Overview If your plans include either, keep reading.

When You Actually Need a Visa

Under UK rules, U.S. citizens are “non-visa nationals,” so short visits don’t require a visa — just the ETA.4GOV.UK. Immigration Rules Appendix Visitor – Visa National List You’ll need to apply for an actual visa if you plan to:

  • Work for a UK employer
  • Study on a program longer than six months
  • Settle in the UK with a British partner or family member
  • Stay longer than six months for any other reason

A note if you live in the U.S. but hold a passport from somewhere else: your visa requirements follow your nationality, not your address. Passport holders from many countries are classified as visa nationals and need advance entry clearance even for a short trip. The UK’s visa national list on GOV.UK tells you where your passport stands.4GOV.UK. Immigration Rules Appendix Visitor – Visa National List

Rarely, a U.S. citizen will still need a Standard Visitor Visa — for example, if the visit falls outside normal tourist activities, such as getting married in the UK. That application costs £135.5GOV.UK. Home Office Immigration and Nationality Fees, 8 April 2026

Skilled Worker Visa for Employment

If you’re relocating to England to work, you’ll apply for a Skilled Worker visa, the successor to the old Tier 2 route. You cannot apply on your own. A UK employer approved by the Home Office has to offer you the job and issue a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) with the role details.6GOV.UK. Skilled Worker Visa

The role has to be on the list of eligible occupations and meet a minimum salary. In most cases that means at least £41,700 per year or the “going rate” for the specific occupation, whichever is higher. If your salary is lower but at least £33,400, you may still qualify in some circumstances.7GOV.UK. Skilled Worker Visa – Your Job

Fees depend on how long the visa runs. Applying from outside the UK, you’ll pay £769 for up to three years and £1,519 for more than three years. If your job is on the immigration salary list, those drop to £590 and £1,160.8GOV.UK. Skilled Worker Visa – How Much It Costs The Immigration Health Surcharge is on top of that.

Student Visa

To study in England on a program longer than six months, you’ll need a Student visa. You must be 16 or older, have an offer from a licensed student sponsor (typically a university or college), and hold a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from that institution.9GOV.UK. Student Visa

Beyond tuition, you have to prove you can cover living costs. Studying in London, you need at least £1,529 per month for up to nine months, or £13,761 total. Outside London, it’s £1,171 per month, or £10,539 total. Those figures are on top of any unpaid tuition listed on your CAS. The application is online through GOV.UK.10GOV.UK. Graduate Visa After You Finish

Once you complete a UK degree, you can switch to a Graduate visa and stay to work without a sponsor. Apply on or before December 31, 2026, and the visa runs two years. From January 1, 2027, the standard length drops to 18 months. PhD and doctoral graduates get three years regardless.11GOV.UK. Graduate Visa – Overview It’s a one-time visa. You can’t extend it or apply again.

Family and Partner Visas

Joining a British citizen or a settled person in the UK as a spouse, partner, or fiancé goes through the family visa route. The financial threshold is real: you and your UK partner must together show income of at least £29,000 per year. Add £3,800 for the first child and £2,400 for each additional child you need to support, capped at £29,000 total.12GOV.UK. Family Visas – Financial Requirements if You’re Applying as a Partner or Spouse

If you or your partner first applied for this route before April 11, 2024, and you’re extending that same visa, the older threshold of £18,600 still applies.12GOV.UK. Family Visas – Financial Requirements if You’re Applying as a Partner or Spouse

You’ll also need to prove the relationship is genuine. Joint bank statements, a shared tenancy, utility bills at the same address, and letters from a doctor or dentist confirming you live together all qualify. The documents must be less than four years old and come from an official source: a government body, bank, landlord, or medical professional.13GOV.UK. Apply as a Partner or Spouse Couples who live apart for work or cultural reasons can instead show regular communication, financial support, and time spent together.

A fiancé or fiancée visa lasts six months, and you must marry or enter a civil partnership within that window.

Costs at a Glance

UK visa fees are set in pounds. The main ones as of April 2026:

Application fees are non-refundable, even if the visa is denied. Getting the paperwork right the first time is worth the effort.

Immigration Health Surcharge

Anyone on a UK visa longer than six months pays the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS), which covers access to the National Health Service. Most applicants pay £1,035 per year. Students, Youth Mobility Scheme holders, and applicants under 18 pay £776 per year.14GOV.UK. Pay for UK Healthcare as Part of Your Immigration Application – How Much Pay You pay the whole amount upfront for the full length of the visa, so a three-year Skilled Worker visa runs £3,105 in IHS alone. Short-term visitors on an ETA or Standard Visitor Visa don’t pay it.

Processing Times

Standard processing for most visas applied for from outside the UK is about three weeks. That applies to Standard Visitor, Student, and Skilled Worker visas.15UK Visas and Immigration. Visa Processing Times – Applications Outside the UK

Two paid services move you up the queue:

Family applications are the exception. Priority processing for spouse and partner visas from outside the UK takes up to 30 working days, considerably longer than other priority routes, and every family member applying with you pays the priority fee separately.16GOV.UK. If Your Application Is Refused

A refusal isn’t necessarily final, but your options depend on which visa you applied for.

For points-based visas — Skilled Worker, Student, Graduate — you can request an administrative review. A different Home Office caseworker looks at the same materials you originally submitted and checks whether the first decision contained an error: a miscalculated point total, an overlooked document, a misapplied rule. You can’t add new evidence. Applicants outside the UK have 28 calendar days from the date of refusal to request the review. There’s some risk: the reviewing officer can also identify additional grounds for refusal that the first decision missed.

Standard Visitor Visa refusals are harder to challenge. There’s generally no right of appeal except on limited human rights grounds. The practical option in most cases is to reapply with stronger documentation targeting the reasons for refusal, which the refusal notice will list. Judicial review is available but only examines whether the original decision was lawfully made, doesn’t reconsider the merits, and requires legal representation.

Whatever the outcome, read the refusal notice closely. It spells out exactly which requirements you failed to meet and whether you have a right to administrative review or appeal. That notice is the roadmap for the next step.
