To complete an Ethiopian embassy passport renewal from abroad, you have two official channels: apply online through the Digital Invea portal at digitalinvea.com and pay by card, or mail a paper application with a money order to the nearest Ethiopian embassy or consulate. Either way, you’ll need your expired passport, a recent photograph meeting the embassy’s specifications, proof of your legal residence in your host country, and the applicable fee.
Which Renewal Method Fits Your Situation
The online route through Digital Invea works best if you already have fingerprints on file from a previous e-passport. You create an account at digitalinvea.com (or through the iOS or Android app), fill in the form, upload your documents, and pay by debit or credit card.1INVEA. Newly Launched INVEA Digital
The mail-in or in-person route through the embassy is required if you need to register fingerprints for the first time, since Ethiopia currently issues only electronic passports with mandatory biometric data. It’s also the fallback if you’d rather handle the process on paper. You’ll submit physical copies of your documents and pay by money order.2Embassy of Ethiopia. Both channels feed the same government system. If you still hold an old manual (non-electronic) booklet and are upgrading to an e-passport for the first time, expect extra paperwork regardless of which method you choose.
Documents to Gather Before You Start
Whichever route you take, the core file is the same. The format differs: digital uploads online, physical copies by mail.
- Your expired Ethiopian passport. Online applicants upload a clear scan of the data page. Mail-in applicants include two photocopies of the data page and send the physical passport itself.
- Proof of legal residence in your host country: a copy of your Green Card, work permit, I-94, or equivalent immigration document.2Embassy of Ethiopia. Notice to Ethiopian Citizens Residing in the United States
- A recent passport photograph. One for online renewal, two for mail-in.
- A completed application form. Digital Invea generates it for online applicants; mail-in applicants download it from the embassy’s website.
- For mail-in applicants: a self-addressed return envelope with prepaid tracking through FedEx, USPS Priority Mail, or USPS Express Mail.
If you’re moving from an old manual passport to an e-passport for the first time, the embassy asks for two completed application forms instead of one, copies of pages one through seven of the old booklet, an extra copy of your residence document, four photos rather than two, and a fingerprint capture form available on the embassy site.2Embassy of Ethiopia. If you hold an Ethiopian Origin ID (the “Yellow Card”), include a copy with your application.3Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. Providing Foreign Nationals of Ethiopian Origin with Certain Rights to be Exercised in Their Country of Origin Proclamation No. 270/2002
Passport Photo Requirements
The photo must measure 30 by 40 millimeters against a plain white background with no shadows. It should be in color, taken within the last six months, and show your full face with a neutral expression and closed mouth. Both eyes open and clearly visible.
Glasses aren’t permitted unless you have a documented medical reason, and even then the lenses must be free of glare. Head coverings for religious reasons are allowed if you include a signed statement confirming their significance, but your face must be fully visible from forehead to chin. For online uploads, save the file as JPG and keep it under 2.5 MB. The portal rejects anything larger.2Embassy of Ethiopia. Notice to Ethiopian Citizens Residing in the United States
Filing Online Through Digital Invea
Go to digitalinvea.com or download the Digital Invea app from the App Store or Google Play.4Embassy of Ethiopia in Canada. Passport Services The workflow runs in three stages.
Create Your Account
Sign up with your personal details and verify your email through the confirmation code the system sends. This account is where you’ll later track your application, so use an email address you check regularly.1INVEA. Newly Launched INVEA Digital
Fill In the Application
From your dashboard, choose the passport renewal option. The form asks for your full name in the Ethiopian convention (your first name, your father’s name, and your grandfather’s name), your date of birth, place of birth, and current occupation. Enter every field exactly as it appears on your existing passport. A minor mismatch in your grandfather’s name or your date of birth can push the file into manual review and add weeks to processing.
You’ll then upload the scanned passport data page, your residence document, and your photograph. Keep the passport scan under 2.5 MB as well. Digital Invea estimates the whole application takes about five minutes if your documents are ready.1INVEA. Newly Launched INVEA Digital
Pay and Submit
After review, the portal sends you to a secure payment page that accepts debit and credit cards.2Embassy of Ethiopia. Notice to Ethiopian Citizens Residing in the United States Save the confirmation number on the next screen. That reference number is how you’ll track the file.
Filing by Mail or In Person at the Embassy
If you’re registering fingerprints for the first time or prefer paper, apply through the Ethiopian Embassy in Washington, D.C., or the nearest consulate. The Washington address is:

If you need to give fingerprints, call the consular section during business hours to arrange it. The embassy updates its instructions periodically, so check the site before you send anything.
Fees
The Digital Invea pricing page lists $350 for a passport renewal, though the amount can vary by booklet size (32-page versus 64-page) and may be revised. Check digitalinvea.com/pricing before you apply. Replacing a lost passport or correcting one is listed at $550.6INVEA. Processing Time and Tracking
Online applicants log into Digital Invea and enter their reference number to see whether the file is under review, in printing, or ready for dispatch. The portal advertises delivery within three weeks for applications processed at a specified pickup location.1INVEA. Newly Launched INVEA Digital
In practice, renewals routed through embassies abroad often take longer. Applicants in the United States commonly report three to four months for the full cycle from submission to receiving the new passport in the mail. Plan accordingly, and if travel is on the horizon, start the process now and read the next section.
If You Need to Travel Before Your Renewal Is Ready
The embassy can issue a laissez-passer, a one-time emergency travel document that gets you into Ethiopia. It cannot be used for the return trip; you’ll need to obtain a passport in Ethiopia before flying back.
Apply in person or by mail with the following:7Embassy of Ethiopia. Laissez Passer
- Two recent color passport-sized photos with a white background and ears visible, with your name written on the back of each.
- One completed application form with your address, phone number, and signature.
- A copy of the data page from your expired passport.
- A copy of your current U.S. immigration status document (Green Card, I-94, or work permit).
- A $120 processing fee by money order payable to “Ethiopian Embassy.”
Mail-in applicants include a self-addressed return envelope with prepaid tracking through FedEx, USPS Priority, or USPS Express Mail, sent to the embassy’s Washington address.7Embassy of Ethiopia. Laissez Passer
If Your Passport Was Lost or Stolen
A lost or stolen passport is not a renewal; it’s a replacement, and the file needs more documentation. Provide:
- A police report from local law enforcement documenting the loss or theft.
- A photocopy of the lost passport’s data page if you have one, or the passport number if you remember it.
- The $550 replacement fee by money order.6INVEA. Get Services at a Reasonable Price
The embassy notes that further documentation may be required depending on your circumstances.2Embassy of Ethiopia. Notice to Ethiopian Citizens Residing in the United States On Digital Invea, choose the “Lost Passport/Correction” option rather than the standard renewal.
When the New Passport Arrives
Your new e-passport carries an embedded chip with your biometric data and works at automated border gates. Sign it right away and check that your name spelling, date of birth, and place of birth all match your records. A mistake caught at home is a phone call. A mistake caught at a border is a much bigger problem.
The new passport replaces the old one entirely. If you mailed the expired booklet in, the embassy cancels it before returning or disposing of it. Keep a photocopy of your new data page stored separately from the passport itself. If it’s ever lost or stolen, that copy speeds up the replacement.
