Ezra Miller: From Grooming Allegations to Burglary Charges

Between 2022 and 2023, actor Ezra Miller faced a stack of overlapping legal issues: grooming allegations from the parents of an Indigenous teenager, two arrests in Hawaii, a harassment order involving a 12-year-old in Massachusetts, and a felony burglary charge in Vermont. Most of it has since resolved. The grooming complaint was withdrawn by the accusing parent in 2024, the Massachusetts order was lifted, and the Vermont felony was reduced to a misdemeanor trespass through a plea deal.1People. The Tokata Iron Eyes Grooming Allegations

The most serious accusations came from Chase Iron Eyes, an attorney and activist, and Dr. Sara Jumping Eagle, a physician. Their child, Tokata Iron Eyes, met Miller in 2016 at the Standing Rock Reservation during protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline. Tokata was 12; Miller was 23.3Los Angeles Times. The parents said Miller flew the then-14-year-old to London in 2017 for the premiere of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and that a chaperone stopped Miller from attempting to sleep in the same bed as the teenager.3Los Angeles Times. The Protective Order

On June 7, 2022, the parents petitioned the Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Court in Fort Yates, North Dakota, for an order of protection. The filing alleged a “pattern of corrupting a minor” going back to 2016 and accused Miller of providing Tokata with marijuana, LSD, and alcohol, using violence and threats, and engaging in “cult-like” and “sexually predatory behavior.”3Los Angeles Times. A tribal judge approved an interim order the same day, barring Miller from contacting the family for 30 days and requiring them to stay at least 100 yards from the family’s home. The parents filed under the federal Violence Against Women Act, giving the order nationwide jurisdiction. Tokata was 18, but the parents remained legal guardians under Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Court rules. Authorities were unable to locate or serve Miller.3Los Angeles Times. Tokata publicly rejected the allegations. In an Instagram video on June 9, 2022, Tokata said the parents’ claims were false and described the relationship with Miller as one of “loving support and invaluable protection.”5Newsweek. Tokata Iron Eyes Native American Activist Ezra Miller Legal Drama In messages to Business Insider, Tokata called the accusations “a disgusting and irresponsible smear campaign,” attributed the bruises to self-harm following a friend’s death, acknowledged taking “a microdose” of LSD, and suggested some injuries occurred when her parents “violently dragged” her from Miller’s home.7Business Insider. The Complaint Withdrawn

On August 25, 2024, Chase Iron Eyes announced on Instagram that he and Jumping Eagle had withdrawn the court filings. He said the original allegations had been made during “a time of absolute war” and rested on information from a witness who later recanted, saying “nothing happened that they could infer anything inappropriate from.” Iron Eyes did not name the witness. He said he wanted to “move on, to reconcile, to heal,” and added, “as long as Tokata’s good we’re good.” His post included photos with Miller.1People. The Two Hawaii Arrests

Hawaii Police Assistant Chief Kenneth Quiocho said Miller was the subject of 10 police calls in the Hilo area between March 7 and April 19, 2022.9Variety. Ezra Miller Arrested Hawaii

The first arrest came on March 28, 2022, at a Hilo karaoke bar called Margarita Village. Police said Miller became “unruly,” yelled obscenities, grabbed a microphone from a woman who was singing, and lunged at a man playing darts. Miller was charged with disorderly conduct and harassment and released on $500 bail. Miller later pleaded no contest to disorderly conduct and was fined $500. The harassment charge was dropped as part of the plea deal.10Hawai’i Public Radio. Actor Ezra Miller Arrested for Assault Again on Hawaii Island

The second arrest came on April 19, 2022, in Pāhoa. Police said Miller became irate after being asked to leave a gathering at a home in the Leilani Estates subdivision and threw a chair that struck a 26-year-old woman on the forehead, causing a small cut. Miller was charged with second-degree assault and released pending further investigation. The final disposition of that charge has not been clearly reported.11Hawaii Police Department. The Massachusetts Harassment Order

In June 2022, a Greenfield, Massachusetts, mother named Shannon Guin was granted a temporary harassment prevention order against Miller on behalf of her 12-year-old nonbinary child.13The Daily Beast. 12-Year-Old Granted Order of Protection Against Ezra Miller

The filing said that during a visit to a neighbor’s home in Greenfield on February 2, 2022, Miller told the child they were “an elevated being” who would “be lucky to have someone like me guide them.” A witness alleged Miller wore a bulletproof vest and brandished a gun during the encounter. Guin said that in a later encounter in April 2022, Miller hugged the child and pressed their body closely against them, and that Miller had screamed at her, accusing her of being “a witch and a vampire.”13The Daily Beast. 12-Year-Old Granted Order of Protection Against Ezra Miller14Vanity Fair. Miller’s attorney, Marissa Elkins, denied the allegations, said Miller was never alone with the child, and said Miller never possessed or displayed a weapon during the interactions. Elkins called the claims “spurious” and “false” and argued Guin had misused the protective order system. The temporary order was lifted on June 30, 2023, one day before it was set to expire, after Guin did not appear at the court hearing. No criminal charges were filed in connection with the matter.15Deadline. Ezra Miller Harassment Order Lifted Massachusetts16USA Today. Ezra Miller Protective Order Lifted Involving Minor

The Vermont Burglary Charge and Plea Deal

Miller was charged with felony burglary and petit larceny for allegedly breaking into a neighbor’s unoccupied home in Stamford, Vermont, on May 1, 2022, and stealing three bottles of liquor. Miller told police they had entered to retrieve cooking ingredients for their mother and said the homeowner was a family friend who had given permission. The homeowner denied that.17VTDigger. Ezra Miller Reaches Plea Deal That Avoids Jail in Break-In Case

The Vermont Farm and the Children’s Welfare Case

Miller’s 96-acre farm in Stamford, Vermont, drew a separate investigation. Starting in mid-April 2022, a 25-year-old mother and her three young children, ages one through five, were living at the property. Sources told Rolling Stone that firearms were scattered around the home, including at least eight assault weapons, rifles, and handguns visible in living-room video footage from April 2022. One source alleged a one-year-old picked up a loose bullet and put it in her mouth. Sources also described heavy marijuana use in front of the children and an unlicensed cannabis operation exceeding Vermont’s private-citizen plant limit.18Rolling Stone. The children’s father contacted Vermont’s Department for Children and Families and local police. A social worker who visited the home on May 16, 2022, reported that the children “looked good.” The mother denied the allegations, saying Miller had helped her escape “a violent and abusive ex” and that firearms were stored away from the children.18Rolling Stone. By August 2022, the state attorney’s office had sought emergency care orders to remove the children, and a court found that remaining in the home was “contrary to the child’s welfare.” Miller said the family had left the property months earlier, but authorities cited the mother’s social media posts from inside the home as recently as late July as evidence to the contrary.19Concord Monitor. Miller’s Mental Health Statement

On August 15, 2022, Miller issued a public statement through a representative acknowledging “complex mental health issues” and announcing they had begun treatment. “I want to apologize to everyone that I have alarmed and upset with my past behavior,” the statement read. “I am committed to doing the necessary work to get back to a healthy, safe and productive stage in my life.”20The Hollywood Reporter. Miller then largely withdrew from public life. In June 2025, they resurfaced at the Filming Italy Sardegna Festival, describing their return to the industry as being “on tentative grounds.” Miller said, “I’ve done horrible things, but I was looking for love,” and expressed “a lot of remorse and lamentation for a lot of things that I did.”23The Hollywood Reporter.
