FNU Name Meaning: What It Is and How to Fix It on Records

FNU stands for “First Name Unknown,” a placeholder that U.S. government agencies drop into records when a person’s given name is missing or doesn’t fit the American first-name/last-name template. The FNU name meaning matters most to people from countries where a single name is standard: when their one name gets entered as a surname, U.S. systems need something in the first-name field, and FNU is what many of them insert. Once it lands on one document, it tends to spread to others. Removing it takes a specific sequence of corrections, starting with your immigration records.

Why FNU Ends Up on Your Documents

Most people carrying FNU come from places where mononyms are the norm. Afghanistan is a common example; parts of Indonesia, South Asia, and the Middle East follow similar conventions. When a person with one name enters the U.S. immigration system, the software demands two name fields. The single name gets pushed into the last-name slot, and the first-name slot has to be filled somehow.

What fills it depends on the agency. USCIS policy treats single-name individuals as having a family name only, and may print “No Name Given” in the given-name field on Permanent Resident Cards and travel documents.1USCIS. Chapter 5 – Verification of Identifying Information Visas issued at U.S. consulates abroad often use “FNU” instead, moving the person’s single name into the last-name field and listing FNU as the first name. State Department guidance says that when an applicant’s ID shows “FNU” or “No First Name,” the passport system should record only the last name.2U.S. Department of State. 8 FAM 403.1 Name Usage and Name Changes By the time that correction is made at the passport stage, FNU may already be embedded in visa records, arrival records, and downstream systems.

FNU can also appear through ordinary data entry issues. Someone who leaves the first-name field blank on an application may find FNU inserted automatically. Because it looks intentional rather than like a typo, it is harder to spot and harder to challenge.

Which Records Carry FNU

Once FNU enters one government database, it replicates. The records most commonly affected:

  • U.S. visas. The usual source, especially for single-name travelers.
  • Green cards and employment authorization documents. If the underlying visa record shows FNU, replacements can inherit it.
  • Social Security records. SSA’s default is to process single-name individuals under their actual name alone. But if an immigration document shows FNU, SSA enters FNU in the first-name field as an alternate name. If you specifically ask SSA to print FNU on the card to match your immigration documents, SSA will do so, treating it as a two-part name.3Social Security Administration. • Driver’s licenses. State DMVs pull names from supporting documents. Federal REAL ID rules require compliant licenses to display “the person’s full legal name,” which is awkward when the legal name on file includes a placeholder.4Department of Homeland Security. REAL ID Act – Title II
  • I-94 arrival records. CBP’s electronic I-94 may store FNU as the given name, and retrieving the record online sometimes requires entering FNU in the first-name field.

What FNU Actually Breaks

The practical fallout is bigger than most people expect. Banks match names across government-issued IDs to verify identity. When a driver’s license reads “FNU Rahimi” and a foreign passport reads “Rahimi” with no given name, the mismatch can stall an account opening, a loan application, a lease, or a utility hookup.

Credit reporting adds another layer. Inconsistent names across accounts can fragment a credit file, with some entries linked to “FNU Rahimi” and others to just “Rahimi,” making it harder to build a single credit profile.

Air travel is where FNU creates its most stressful moments. TSA’s Secure Flight program requires the name on an airline reservation to match the name on your government-issued ID exactly.5Transportation Security Administration. Does the Name on My Airline Reservation Have to Match the Name on My Application If a passport shows a single name with no given name but a U.S. visa lists FNU as the first name, there is no obvious right entry for the booking form. Some airlines tell single-name travelers to type FNU into the first-name field when their visa shows it. Others use different workarounds. Getting it wrong can mean boarding problems.

International travel makes this worse. Foreign officers who don’t recognize FNU as a U.S. abbreviation may treat it as the traveler’s actual name or question the documents. Carrying supporting paperwork helps.

Employment paperwork creates its own headaches. Employers must report each employee’s name and Social Security number on Form W-2 exactly as shown on the Social Security card.6Internal Revenue Service. Publication 15 (2026), (Circular E), Employer’s Tax Guide If a card reads “FNU Rahimi” but the employer reports wages under just “Rahimi,” the mismatch can draw IRS penalties. Form I-9 corrections run into the same wall. When an employer records a name change or resolves a discrepancy, they update the Form I-9 and may ask for legal documentation of the correction.7U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. 6.3 Recording Changes of Name and Other Identity Information for Current Employees For workers carrying FNU across multiple documents, the employment paperwork usually has to wait until the immigration and SSA records are corrected first.

How to Fix FNU on Your Records

Correcting FNU is a sequence, not a single step, because each record feeds the next. Fix immigration documents first, then Social Security, then everything downstream. Agencies want to see corrected source documents before they will update their own.

Step One: Immigration Documents

To correct a name on a green card or employment authorization card, provide USCIS with evidence of the name change: a court order, marriage certificate, or other vital record.8U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Immigration Documents and How to Correct, Update, or Replace Them For green card holders, that means filing Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card. The filing fee is $465 for paper applications or $415 online as of March 2026.9U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. G-1055 Fee Schedule Important exception: if FNU appeared because of a DHS error rather than something you submitted, the replacement fee is waived.

Step Two: Social Security Records

Once your immigration documents reflect your correct name, update your Social Security card by filing Form SS-5, Application for a Social Security Card, with supporting identity documents.10Social Security Administration. How Do I Change or Correct My Name on My Social Security Number Card SSA’s default for single-name individuals is to issue the card in the single name only, without FNU. If your corrected immigration documents now show a given name, SSA will update the card to match.3Social Security Administration. POMS RM 10205.130 – Entering Other Names of NH in SSNAP Getting this card right matters because employers, banks, and the IRS all treat it as the authoritative name record.

Step Three: Downstream Records

With corrected immigration and SSA documents in hand, update your driver’s license at the state DMV, then update bank accounts, employment records, and anything else that carries the old name. Each of those institutions will want to see the corrected federal documents before making the change.

The Legal Name Change Option

For people who truly have a single name and want to add a given name to function within the American system, a legal name change through a state court is often the most permanent solution. Filing fees vary by jurisdiction, from roughly $25 to $500 depending on the county, and low-income applicants can often request a fee waiver. The court order gives you a clean, universally recognized document to present to USCIS, SSA, the DMV, and everyone else.

Timing matters. Many immigration attorneys recommend waiting until you become a permanent resident before pursuing a legal name change, because changing your name mid-process can complicate pending applications. Once you have your green card, a state court name change followed by a Form I-90 filing produces a matching set of documents from top to bottom.

Related Placeholders

FNU is not the only abbreviation used when name information is incomplete. LNU means “Last Name Unknown” and appears when a family name is missing. NMN means “No Middle Name” and prevents systems from flagging a blank middle-name field as an error. These placeholders differ from “John Doe” or “Jane Doe,” which are used when a person’s entire identity is unknown; FNU, LNU, and NMN signal that specific parts of a known person’s name are missing.
