How Big Is a ZIP Code? What Determines Its Size?

A ZIP code can be as small as roughly 0.3 square miles or as large as about 30,683 square miles, and there is no standard size for a ZIP code because the U.S. Postal Service draws each one around mail delivery workload rather than geography. The smallest sit in dense urban neighborhoods like Manhattan’s 10028, which covers about three-tenths of a square mile. The largest in the continental United States, 99734 around Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, spans roughly 30,683 square miles. Everything else falls somewhere between those extremes, and the reason is simple: a ZIP code is only as big or small as its carriers’ routes need it to be.

The Range in Practice

There are roughly 41,700 active ZIP codes in the United States, and each one reflects local mail volume and route needs. In Manhattan, where population density exceeds 140,000 people per square mile in some neighborhoods, a single ZIP code may cover just a few city blocks. New York City as a whole has more than 170 ZIP codes packed across its five boroughs. Remote areas of Alaska, Nevada, and Montana go the other direction, with individual ZIP codes larger than some entire states.

More than half of all U.S. ZIP code areas are classified as 100 percent rural, and those tend to cover far more land than urban ones. A rural ZIP code in the western United States might stretch across hundreds of square miles while serving only a few hundred mailboxes. An urban ZIP code in Chicago or Los Angeles might cover a couple of square miles and handle tens of thousands of deliveries daily. The size follows the mail, not the map.

What Determines the Size

The USPS ties ZIP code boundaries to mail volume, delivery area, geographic location, and topography rather than to city limits or county lines.1United States Postal Service. Postal ZIP Code Boundaries Four factors do most of the work:

  • Population density. More people generate more mail, so ZIP codes shrink to keep carrier routes manageable. Sparse populations produce the opposite effect.
  • Mail volume. A commercial district with heavy business mail may get its own ZIP code even if it occupies a small footprint. A residential area with modest volume may share a ZIP code with surrounding territory.
  • Terrain. Mountains, rivers, and other natural barriers shape delivery routes. If a ridge makes it impractical for one carrier to serve both sides, the USPS may split them into separate ZIP codes.
  • Infrastructure. Road networks, highway access, and the location of post offices all influence where boundary lines fall. A carrier route follows drivable paths, not straight lines on a map.

These boundaries are not static. Delivery growth and shifting demographics can force the USPS to adjust ZIP code lines to keep operations efficient.1United States Postal Service. Why ZIP Codes Don’t Match Cities, Counties, or States

One of the most common misunderstandings about ZIP code size is that ZIP codes line up with cities, counties, or states. They don’t. The USPS has stated that ZIP code assignments are not tied to municipal or perceived community boundaries.1United States Postal Service. Postal ZIP Code Boundaries A ZIP code can straddle two towns, reach across county lines, or cross state borders when that routing makes more sense for delivery.

At least 13 ZIP codes span two states. ZIP code 42223 covers parts of both Kentucky and Tennessee. 81137 straddles Colorado and New Mexico. 97635 crosses the California-Oregon line. In each case, a community near a state border is served more efficiently from a post office on the other side.

The reverse is also true. A single city can contain dozens or hundreds of ZIP codes. The Census Bureau has acknowledged that the “city” name attached to a mailing address often does not match the actual legal municipality where the address sits.2U.S. Census Bureau. ZIP codes can also be non-contiguous, meaning a single code may have disconnected pockets of territory. So the “size” of a ZIP code is not always a single shape you can measure on a map.

Not Every ZIP Code Has a Real Area

Size only means something for ZIP codes that cover actual delivery territory. The USPS uses three main categories, and two of them have little or no geographic footprint:

  • Standard ZIP codes cover residential and business delivery routes across a defined area. These are the ones people usually picture when they think about ZIP code size.
  • P.O. Box ZIP codes are assigned exclusively to post office boxes at a particular facility. They have no geographic territory beyond the post office building itself.
  • Unique ZIP codes are reserved for organizations with extremely high mail volumes, so their incoming mail can bypass normal sorting. Large federal agencies, major universities, and some corporations receive their own ZIP code. The Pentagon has one.

Why ZIP Code Maps Are Only Approximate

If you have ever looked up the square mileage of a ZIP code online, you were probably looking at a ZIP Code Tabulation Area, or ZCTA, not the ZIP code itself. The distinction matters when you care about size. Actual USPS ZIP codes are tied to individual delivery points, not polygons on a map. The USPS stores them as components of discrete addresses, which makes them a point-based dataset that cannot be mapped as areas.3U.S. Census Bureau. ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs)

To create something mappable, the Census Bureau aggregates those delivery points into census tabulation blocks and builds approximate polygon boundaries around them. The resulting ZCTAs look like ZIP code maps, but they are generalized approximations. Some ZIP codes have no corresponding ZCTA at all, and ZCTA boundaries do not always match the actual delivery routes. Any square-mileage figure you see for a ZIP code is really a ZCTA estimate. Close enough for most purposes, but not exact.
